Right click on the file and rename?
Or mark the file and press F2?

Can be done to several files at a time, within the same folder, they will then get a (number) before their file extension. There are also many programs on download.com which will rename multiple files for you after any one system you setup.

Or maybe I don't get what you're asking for?

I find it fairly quick and easy to rename files in XP or Vista with FastStone's Photo Resizer freeware.
