NASA discover "exceptional object in our cosmic neighborhood"

WASHINGTON -- NASA will hold a news conference at 12:30 p.m. EST on Monday, Nov. 15, to discuss the Chandra X-ray Observatory's discovery of an exceptional object in our cosmic neighborhood.

The news conference will originate from NASA Headquarters' television studio, 300 E St. SW in Washington and carried live on NASA TV.

Media representatives may attend the conference, join by phone or ask questions from participating NASA locations. To RSVP or obtain dial-in information, journalists must send their name, affiliation and telephone number to Trent Perrotto at: [email protected] by 10 a.m. EST on Nov. 15. Reporters wishing to attend the conference in-person must have a valid press credential for access. Non-U.S. media also must bring passports.

Scientists involved in the research will be available to answer questions. Panelists providing analysis of the research include:
- Jon Morse, director, Astrophysics Division, NASA Headquarters in Washington
- Kimberly Weaver, astrophysicist, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md.
- Alex Filippenko, astrophysicist, University of California, Berkeley

This is pretty exciting. I'm hoping for more than a comet.

By the way, did anyone hear about China, how they found something on the moon and they started to celebrate for some reason? And why did the USA send up a missile a couple of days ago and they clamed they didn't know anything about it? Whats going on in space?

I'm guessing we have a comet or asteroid headed this wayt in the next 50 years. Just a guess, but with all this "populating mars" shit going on, it wouldn't surprise me.

No, zero chance. If there's a huge asteroid headed this way, we'll know well in advance of 50 years. Even amateur astrologists would pick up on it well in advance, so there wouldn't be any keeping secrets.

It will be nothing serious. They'll probably just announce that they received funding for some bogus let's-fly-to-mars program.
If it was a flying saucer, then we would have sent a nuclear missile there already.
But who knows, we did have a missile launch of unknown origin quite recently...

True. They are repeatedly spotting new shit. These things are easily missed in all that space. They're doing a good job of covering it, but as was mentioned earlier, they are only covering a small portion of the space that is out there at a time.

What ever it is, it should be pretty cool. The Chandra X-Ray observatory has found alot of interesting stuff in its 10 years or so of operation including a Super Nova in our own galaxy.

The coolest, weirdest thing that Chandra has discovered is this (get ready to freak your heads out).

The Universe started with a Big Bang, right? All of the stars and galaxies are flying away from each other and have been for the past 14 Billing years or so. Common knowledge so far, right?

But get this:

The SPEED at which the galaxies are flying away from each other is INCREASING. Yes, increasing. It makes no sense. What is accounting for the increasing speed? Where is the energy coming from?

Expansion was slowing down, but something strange happened about 6 billion years ago with expansion began to speed up.

So cool...and so strange..

I think I read somewhere that they can only cover 3 or 7 % or whatever it was. It was a very small %.
