Best monitor for gaming?

My oldest son is looking to get a new monitor that will primarily be used for gaming. He asked me to check around and see what my forum people recommended.

He wants something in the 23-24" range.

Pricerange?

Honestly, what you're looking for is any monitor under 5ms response time with any advertised resolution 10000:1 or greater, and resolution of 1920x1080 and he'll be happy. Just be sure the video card in the computer can pull that resolution off or his games will chug.

If you really care about color quality, look at the Viewsonic line like the new ViewSonic VX2739wm. Samsung always does good with their montiors as well, but pay attention as they have way to many fucking models.
Acer and LG are good monitors for the price, but generally do not do great on color. But of course, its really how well your son is going to notice that something isn't as orange as it should be

As an avid PC gamer, feel free to ICQ or email me on any you're considering and I'd be happy to give you feedback on it.

Last time I checked Alienware didn't make monitors.

edit: looks like they do now. They have a 3D 23 inch monitor. Most likely a rebadged Dell.

Dell makes very good monitors.
Alienware is overpriced shit (lots of fancy words rebranded from other manufacturers).

Recently got two Benq G2420HD monitors and they're fantastic. Just be sure to buy a DVI/HDMI cable, if you don't already have one, as neither of mine came with any cables in the box (it mentions this on reviews sites so I picked up 2 HDMI cables at the same time as purchasing the monitors and was glad I did).

Check out some of the 120hz monitors. Don't believe people who say LCD monitor don't have refresh rates, they do and it makes a huge difference. If you have a video card that runs max resolution at 120hz, the difference is clear and it's much easier on your eyes when you are playing.

Thank you all for the info thus far. He really appreciates it.

He is debating the merits of a 1920x1200 vs 1920x1080. Any input on that?

He said that the system he ordered has SLI GTX 580's and 6GB of 2000Mhz RAM, so resolution isn't really a power issue.

It could be the bigger the better. I saw a huge big screen TV outside the CN Tower in Toronto. The TV was showing an NBA Raptors game.

There are only a handful of companies that produce LCDs for the major "manufacturers" that relabel them. I have had good luck with my last three Viewsonics and I think they all have three year warranties. Low numbered (fast measured in milliseconds) response rates used to be what to look for so that you didn't have ghosting but I think in this day and age most monitors will suffice.

Thank you very much! Forwarded that link to him.

He was looking at one from Dell, but he doesn't really want to spend $600 on it. Hopefully between this thread and what you posted, he can find the most bang for his buck.

I think the one i mentioned is a step above that. The one i recently purchased

Samsung PX2370

Its the best 23 inch Samsung I have seen. Plus like somebody else mentioned, theres only a few companies that produce them and they relabel them. I believe Samsung is one of those brands.

I have that too, I bought the 23" led lcd because its better for photos. I dont believe any T.V's display photos as good as good quality computer monitors

For video, I put it on my big screen.
