Ok no one here bought this new black magic camera?
That doesnt suprise me as its out of stock for weeks now all across europe. Pathetic trying to create a hype by acting the demand is huge by simply not shipping goods to the stores...
See how your marketing works out: im going to buy another camera.

I have three of them and other on it's way too send to our Spanish office.

My Ursa Mini Pro at home and the Ursa Mini 4K we have at the studio have pretty much sat idle since the Pockets have arrived. On a DJI Ronin S, they're the perfect set up for quite a few things.

It's still lacking a bunch of stuff that the bigger cameras have that don't make it the best for some things. But the size and image and price absolutely CANNOT be beat.

Cameras are readily available here. Like I said, I've got 3 (1st wasn't ordered until 12/1) and another I just ordered on Monday.

Also...demand is HUGE. Every DP / Camera Op I know either has one on order or already has theirs. And these are folks who work with $60k camera bodies regularly.

I sit on the board of a local filmmaking organization. Blackmagic Cameras are a big deal to the independent film scene. For $1300 you can have a camera and software package that will allow you to create images and colors that very closely replicate those $60k cameras.

It's pretty fucking amazing, if you ask me. I was thrilled to be able to do that at the $7000 price range with the Ursa Mini Pro, but for under $1500...that's a game changer.

I rented it and absolutely loved it. Amazing for the money.

BM always have delivery problems with new products here... so or they are hyping it or their distribution network sucks.

I thought about the moza air 2 instead of the ronin s... seems to have slightly better usability. But... also out of stock

The demand is insanely huge. Worldwide and to people these cameras probably shouldn't appeal to. They marketed it to Youtubers in China and a big chunk of the initial run went to Asia. Even though this camera is not at all a vlogging camera, they have marketed it as such. Not to mention, it's a great fucking camera.

The only people I know waiting are folks that have gotten them from places like B&H or Adorama had not so early pre sales. I cancelled mine, because at first...I wasn't that interested. I've been ordering from a small shop outside of NYC. Each time I've emailed for a camera, I've had one within a week. I've order 4 at this point and they've been spot on each time.

DJI software support has always been key for me. I've been eyeing the Tilta Gravity, since I have their Nucleus N unit on preorder already. But I keep going back to the DJI. I've had great luck with their drones and the original Ronin.

It's a myth that one is able to shoot cinema grade videos (1080p) for less than $10k, even with cheap solutions such as Canon + Magic Lantern. Let me explain why.

The additional equipment you need to buy to make BMPCC(4K) actually usable, brings the price of this camera to way more than $1500. You simply can't get a semi-usable system for daylight shooting for less than $3500 (without lenses). Think about stabilizing, focus pulling, video monitoring, additional batteries and you will come to an actual price of a rig that is usable.

Panasonic GH5 or Sony A7s III (a low light beast!) are cheaper and much better alternatives for low budget everyday shooting, due to the lack of autofocus on Black Magic cameras. I agree, you can't compare them to BMPCC codecs, but ProRes compatible recorders are cheaper nowadays.

If you are going to use manual autofocus on BMPCC, you will have to spend couple of grands more for some stabilizing system (a shoulder rig, tripod or a gimbal), a monitor that is usable in the sunlight and a focus pulling system, and that can easily cost $1000+ each. Not to mention expenses for another person that will have to take care of the focusing if you want a really usable video quality. If you are going to use manual focus, then your budget is most definitely way higher than that anyway, so solutions like Canon C200 (a proper cinema camera) look way more tempting then. With its kick ass DPAF and a higher dynamic range than BMCC, I would always prefer to get a plug and play system (C200) that works out of the box for $7500 (with no additional expenses).

You can find some decent alternatives among Panasonic or Sony cameras, but none of them is going to cost below $5000 (plus lenses).

Also, don't forget about lighting...

BMPCC4K is a nice peace of equipment, but low sensitivity (ISO) and low dynamic range makes it hardly usable in low light situations.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not against Black Magic cameras. I love them because they are pushing the industry forward by putting additional pressure on big camera manufacturers to keep up with camera development. But don't think one can get close to a cinema grade quality camera for couple of grands only. I personally got disappointed when I figured that out the harder way. Anyway, all the remarks written above are from my personal experience only, so please take them with a grain of salt.

Yes of course but that counts for most camera's. Buy a 20K RED and you would need another 20K to make it work. Buy a GH5 and you would still need lenses etc...

The GH5 actually sucks in low light. The GH5s does better but you would need a stabilizer. I agree i would not shoot a wedding with a bmpcc4k...

Talking about cinema I would not choose for the camera to make decisions for me in regards to focus.


The Bmpcc4k dual iso is perfect for low light. I shot in a city at night with only some streetlights... absolutely christal clear low noise.... It has a 13 stops of dynamic range... I would not call that low although simply comparing different DR numbers from different cameras doesn't say much.

we use the lumix fz1000 and our good friend, also in the business uses nikon d610, he´s got like top grade lens´5k for his 200mm, his 50mm cost like 500 quid, anyway, he uses his panasonic fz1000 too!

They really are great for film, in all lighting, with a cinema effect, best shot maybe 120mm great commitment on the people and the out of focus background brings lots of contrast and that´s what cinematography´s about...
