PC Strategy games - what's the latest/greatest?

I've been playing Age of Empires 3 and still love it! Command and Conquer is another favourite of mine, gone through the whole lot up to Yuri's revenge.

Any suggestions for any similar and perhaps newer games in this genre?

I've nearly finished AOE 3 and like playing skirmishes still, but looking for something new if possible.

Klen 11-20-2012 11:13 AM

Well i like AOE3 too but it's not really a replayable game once you finish campaign and try all skirmish levels. At the moment i still play redalert 3 and it's mode challenge, where i try to accomplish better time on it.

Paul&John 11-20-2012 11:14 AM

You can try out the new Xcom Enemy Unknown (remake/reimagination of the original one) from firaxis (civ series).
Or just buy this badass for 5.99$ http://www.gog.com/gamecard/sid_meiers_colonization :D

PR_Glen 11-20-2012 11:23 AM

i keep meaning to try out aoe but never get around to it.

Red Alert 3? Was that after Yuri's revenge? I remember playing Red Alert 2 and Generals/Zero Hour.

Not sure about 3 though, going to have to check my box set and see if that was in there.

That might my first thing to look for :thumbsup

Anyone played Civilization V?

I'll have a look, isn't gog.com mostly older games though? I want something newer :)

You're missing out :thumbsup. Be careful though, it's hard to close down once you get started.

Cool will check it out! That new xcom looks like 3rd person shooter?

Paul&John 11-20-2012 11:47 AM

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a turn-based tactical role-playing strategy video game (from wiki) :)
just like the old one

Ah right, looks good, but not really my thing.

I might get Red Alert 3 and Command and Conquer 4 because I haven't got them, just checked. I got the first decade box set only goes up to Generals.

Any good places to download demos these days? I want to try a couple of the Civilization games out and see what they're like.

Mr. Garibaldi 11-20-2012 11:59 AM

i still play Rise Of The Nations (2003)... i think its 10 times better than any of Command and Conquer release...

_Richard_ 11-20-2012 12:17 PM

total war

Elli 11-20-2012 12:29 PM

I'm a huge AOE3 fan, and C&C:Generals, too. And the original SimCity games. There just doesn't seem to be out much in this vein lately. I tried "Modern War" on my iPad and was heavily disappointed. blah. I'll have to look at the firaxis one linked above.

Want to play a strip skirmish match sometime? :)

Yeah you're right though not much new out these days, there used to be a good new strategy game like every month, haven't seen hardly any around the past few years :(

Going to try Civilization out and find some of the missing Command & Conquers I think.

Oh and Black and White used to be good, so might look for number 2 (not rhyming slang).

bronco67 11-20-2012 12:45 PM

Always loved Company of Heroes.

I think number 2 is out soon.

Mr. Garibaldi 11-20-2012 01:08 PM

also 2 more great ones from 2000s

World In Conflict (late 80s USSR - USA war scenario)
and yes, Company of Heroes (WW2 allies campaign)

ajrocks 11-20-2012 01:16 PM

On a console the best turn based game ever is Civilizations Revolutions.

ill check it out.. i heard good things about X-com, but haven't actually tried it yet

Klen 11-20-2012 01:34 PM

Civilization V gods and kings is awesome game,i would even say too awesome , because let say if you start to play in Monday you could spend entire week doing nothing else then just playing it since one game average duration is close to one week.

basically you can't go wrong with the civilization series, one of the best strategy games out there.. and civ5 got some decent graphics also..

btw you can check out OpenTTD also, http://www.openttd.org/en/ it's a freeware remake of the original Transport Tycoon Delux, pretty cool too.

Elli 11-20-2012 02:40 PM

Civ 5 it is, then :) I believe I have a task this weekend :)

God I spent sp much time on xcom whilst at college!

arock10 11-20-2012 03:37 PM

Picked up this space trading and combat simulator, X3: Terran Conflict, which has a lot of strategy and depth. It started to feel like a bit like work after a while but was pretty cool and very complex, nice old school style game with some newer graphics and stuff. Basically build a giant space empire, almost more like sim city.

Si 11-20-2012 03:46 PM

Current shortlist is:

Civ 5 and perhaps 4 or another more recent Civ game.
Command and Conquer 3
Red alert 3
Command and Conquer 4 I didn't know I was missing so many!

Thanks guys for helping me find something new :thumbsup

Got to check out some of the more recent suggestions. I don't really want games from early 2000's though because chances are I looked at them back then and put them down but I'll make sure first :thumbsup

pornmasta 11-20-2012 05:10 PM

a lot of people say that CIV 4 is better than CIV 5.

One of my favorites, along with the Kingdoms expansion.

I wish I could find my Total Annihilation CD

I know my questions is moving away from the traditional war strategy games SI was referring to but anyone can recommend a Final Fantasty Tactics/Vandal Hearts 1/2 type strategy game that's turned based?

d-null 11-20-2012 10:04 PM

slight off topic, but does anyone remember the old game on the Amiga that was a semi-humorous but very addictive strategy game about Nuclear Cold war, that had cartoonish type characters for the world leaders with different personalities, like Gandhi, and Gorbachev, and Ronald Reagan, and Thatcher, etc.?

that was such a fun game, and simple and quick enough to play in an hour or so, with lots of replayability, someone should do a remake for PC (if they haven't already)

I forget the name of it though, anyone?? I'd love to play it again and see if it holds up decades later

Starcraft2 is by far the best real time PVP strategy game

Sneakers2606 11-21-2012 07:03 AM

Empire earth, the orginal one, epic game!

Many hours of my youth lost playing that

CyberHustler 11-21-2012 07:13 AM

I'm having fun with crimecraft
