LAPTOP + TABLET - Recommendations please

I want to get a tablet, but one that can sport a "full keyboard" when I want it, able to install software on it (not just apps), great resolution and the key ports to connect it to a bigger screen when at the office.

I know you have those Windows Surface ones, the Chromebooks, VAIO, Lenovo Yoga and so forth - who has experience with this, and is it necessary to take it to "laptop level", or will I be fine with just a tablet and keyboard extension?

mineistaken 03-31-2014 05:24 PM

Neither tablet with keyboard extension nor chromebook won't bring you to "laptop level" :)

Beginning to realize that... There are the Lenovos, Acers and Vaios that combine the two worlds, but they do get clonky in terms of size... I just dont feel like bringing two around with me.:helpme

I've been looking at the Dell XPS 18. It's like a huge tablet that is an all in one.

I think this would be great for traveling....

mineistaken 03-31-2014 05:50 PM

lol that is gigantic... not really suitable for traveling or any other purposes.. I mean is it fun to hold 18 inch "tablet"?

while it's not suitable to take it to starbucks it would be great to take on vacation. I use to take my 17" laptops on plane trips and although they fit on the fold down trays they keyboard was almost cutting into my stomach. With this it would be great. It's a lot lighter than a 17" laptop.

magicmike 03-31-2014 08:45 PM

Why not just a macbook air, or an ultrabook? What are you looking to do with it?

OY 03-31-2014 11:24 PM

Ultrabook is now high on my list. I dropped all Apple products years ago.

I want ease of use, producticity, full software capabilities and ports to tack on multiscreens.

Why 03-31-2014 11:26 PM

any tablet with bluetooth can have a keyboard linked to it.

i recommend the samsung tablets. unless you are a pure apple man, then go with the ipad.

He clearly stated that he wants the usefulness of laptop where he could do everything, not just play with apps on tablet.

I still think it would be better if that screen was 17 inch tops.
To be honest I do not imagine the reason why did they make it 18 inch.
Difference between 18 and 17 in terms of portability is crucial and what can't people do on 17 incher that hey could do on 18 incher when they travel? Extra inch is a bonus for your everyday computer, but for travelers...

Buy a real laptop or tablet. Don't go for Chrome books or similar. Chrome books don't really do anything if you can't connect to the Intnernet, but a laptop or tablet is useful even without a connection.

My favourite laptop is the Apple Macbook Air. Big screen, super light device, silent, SSD, and 10 whopping hours of battery life. So yummy.

Chrome book is a castrated laptop, created in line with the company policy - we want to take over the World and fuck everything up.

Mark my word, if the Google fuckers don't get sopped, a few years from now we won't be able to fill up our tanks or buy burgers without signing in with our Google accounts first. It is time for them to die! They've done tons of good, no doubt, now it's time for them to go, like get a gold watch and fuck off into the oblivion.

About a month ago I bought the surface pro 2. I like it for its portability. I bought the docking station and run it into a 23 inch touchscreen monitor when working.

Windows app store pretty much sucks but the surface is a little powerhouse. Very impressed with how quick it is. I opted for the 256gb so I could get the 8gbs of ram. Because it has a SSD it has no fans and it is completely silent. That is a big deal for me as I hate fan noise on PC's.

With the docking station, monitor and accessories it was around $2100

I swear by my Dell XPS 13... Got a Galaxy 10.1 tablet and bluetooth keyboard, but I haven't found it to be a 100% laptop replacement for the stuff I do regularily. I'm not an average user though.

Nobody can convince me that signing in with your Google account is really needed to download an Android app. Can you imagine signing in with a Microsoft account for every piece of Windows software that you download? How pathetic is that?

As for YouTube, the YouTube co-founder summed it up nicely - "why the fuck do i need a google+ account to comment on a video?" I see he changed his comment since, but that was probably done after his lawyers told him to be a good boy or kiss a few million bucks good bye

Even for average user app based tablets won't change laptop experience with programs and all that.

It's not the size that is the issue, it's the fact it is shit that is more of a problem. Think about it They've been trying to sell a tablet for 12 years. There's a reason for that.

OY 04-03-2014 10:36 AM

So after much back and forth, I ended up with the cop-out Lenovo Yoga 2 Ultrabook. It is a laptop, and a tablet (to big for most) but most importantly it is a PC. I am a PC guy.

That said, I hope I will learn Windows 8 before I retire - It took me three tries to make this post as the friggin thing kept on tossing me back to the main screen in Win8. I have yet to figure out why, but I think it has something to do with me moving my fingers across the pad part.

Ill report back in 8 years if I like the thing or not....

I've been running a Surface Pro 2 as my travel device and I love it. There is a BIG difference between the pro2 and all the other Surface devices. You're right, the others do suck, but the Pro 2 is a home run.

They just released a driver update to fully support display port 1.2, so you can now daisy chain two external monitors off the one video output, and have the Surface itself as a third monitor.

This thing is just awesome. You could pretty much replace all your office PCs with them.

The Surface Pro series was 3rd on my list. A Sony Vaio Ultrabook came in before the Surface Pro. The regular Surface and Chromebook was out the window the moment I realized they had no PC functionality, just apps. The normal world is just not ready for just apps yet...

So surface pro 2 is like an actual PC where you can install any programs you would install on your desktop? I mean versus the tablet/application style less usable things.

Correct me here as I did not go in deeper research:

yoga - ultrabook with non detachable 360 spinning scree
vaio - just an ultrabook with no tabletish features
surface pro 2 - tablet with attachable keyboard

I mean they all are very different devices to be put in one category. Or not? :)

Yes. The Surface Pro 2 is essentially a desktop PC in tablet form. When docked with an external monitor/keyboard/mouse, you wouldn't notice the difference. CPU is a core i5, same family as in the MacBook Air.

Any competition in this field? I mean tablet as a PC + detachable keyboard?
The only thing besides not sexy design I do not like - glossy screen...

RyuLion 04-03-2014 02:16 PM

Oy!! Hit me up!

crockett 04-03-2014 04:06 PM

What ever you get as far as a tablet, I stay far away from iPads. They are over priced and the wifi range absolutely sucks ass. Added to this the wifi doesn't play well with all bands. Example, when I tether it to my nexus phone via wireless, it constantly drops out and pages stop responding even if I'm sitting g with the phone next to me. Meanwhile if I tether my laptop to the same phone, it never drops out and generally has no issues.

You can test this for yourself to see what I'm saying is true. Go to a mall or somewhere that sells both apple iPads and either windows or android tablets. Check the wifi signal on the Apple iPads then check and see how many more wifi locations show up on the windows and androids. I've tested this many times on both ipad minis like I have and full side iPads. The iPads always have shit range and the windows & android always have way more hot spots.

Out side of the wifi issues the iPads are pretty nice. I like the screen size and the battery life is great, but if you will be using wifi often, do yourself a favor and stay far away from iPads. I can't comment if the laptops have the same issue.

I'm sure you will get people who will might try to convicne you otherwise, but these three all cover the same market...in my opinion.

google nexus 10. I used to work for at&t if you're looking for a tablet, you can't go wrong with that one. They don't carry them in store but it beats all competitors :thumbsup
