Skufty's last day
11 and a half years ago I met my best friend. He's always been there for me, always wanting to stay by my side no matter what. He ate everything, bite people, and stunk like no one else I've ever known. I love him more then anyone else in this world. 3 years ago when I went bankrupt (thanks to a corrupt city of wpg police officer) and lost 3 mill I told my bankruptcy trustee you can have everything except my dog. 3 weeks ago Skufty stopped eating, he had more rotten teeth. We had them removed, but he still wouldn't eat for a week. x-rays and a sonogram said there's an inoperable mass in his stomach. We hoped he might be able to beat it, and helped him by force feeding him for the last couple of weeks, but it's getting worse. He was 54 lbs a month ago, he's way under 40 lbs now. We know he's in pain. Tomorrow (Monday, Feb 6) is is last day, he goes to sleep at 12:30 at the vet's. I'm not sure what I'm going to do without him........
I left my ex wife when Skufty was about 3, I went to a convention for 5 days, leaving Skufty with her and figured we'd work out a custody agreement when I got back. When I got back, I went to the house, skufty didn't hear me, he was sleeping. My ex said see, he doesn't care about you. I called out, SKUFTY! He woke up, came charging to me, got a pet, then BUSTED past me and waited at my car door, demanding to go with me. He knew what was going on, and made a strong statement there and then, he was going with me. He's always been like that, he's MY dog. I think my favorite Skufty memory was at the bar I owned. We were in the lounge with a few people and a promoter before we opened. Josh Bell came in, Skufty was on a couch, sitting up like a human the way he does with one paw on the arm rest, looking all regal. Josh sat on a couch 2 couches over, looked at Skufty and said "what's up Skuf?" Skufty snorted at him. Josh took offense, and said "FUCK YOU DOG!" - Skufty threw down, he jumped off the couch and lost it in a rage of temper, charging Josh and chased him through the bar till Josh had to jump up on one of the bars to hide from Skufty! He was always gangster like that. We had a lot of rough people come in on fridays, with our hip hop crowd and they all loved that basset. He was gangster, like one of them. Saturdays was electric music, hippy like people, and he hated all of them. He might have been a basset hound, but he carried himself like a junkyard dog his whole life. anyway, I know many of you have met and know Skufty, and many more know about him from his pictures and antics on here over the last 11 years or so. I just wanted to let you know. :( whoever photochoped the old picture of Skufty smiling, I have it somewhere, I just wanted to say thank you. It was a few years back, but it really captured his essence, the evil smirk. Loved that one.... |
Sorry for your loss Sleazy!

Sorry to hear. You are doing the right thing by letting him go though. It would be too much on him to try to make him live through this.
A dog is truly a man's best friend. They will never desert or betray you. |

http://petloss.com/rbowx.gif Rainbow Bridge http://petloss.com/rbowx.gif Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... |

I'm sorry to hear that Skufty's life is coming to an end... :( I enjoyed hearing about and seeing his life and times in words and pictures here on GFY. My condolences to you Scott, as you bid farewell to your faithful companion. ADG |
Sorry to hear about this Sleazy. Nothing nothing nothing compares to the loyalty, companionship and pure joy that a dog gives unconditionally. Anyone who doesn't know this has never owned a dog.
Peace to you Skufty... |

Hey Scott,
It's been a month and a half since we had to put Cayman to sleep. Mentally, it was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do in my life. I know exactly how you feel right now as it's still very fresh in my mind. There hasn't been a day that I have not thought about him. Any time I get up in the middle of the night I still walk carefully so I don't trip over him. I miss him very much. Even though you know the time has come, you will probably still question if you are making the right decision. It just doesn't feel natural to do such a thing, especially with your best friend. Talking with friends and family will help you through the next few weeks. You have my number and are welcome to use it any time of day. I'm very sorry for your loss. R.I.P. Skufty |
I am sorry for your loss. If it has gotten that bad it's probably better he not be put through any more pain like you mentioned.
My girlfriend and I owned a rat terrier and had the same exact thing. Dog was fine and suddenly started becoming lethargic, gaining weight. Took her to the vet and they could not find anything. Spent a few months and a few k on tests and meds to raise her white platelet count. It fluctuated a lot during that time. After a few months they found a huge tumor in her chest and they could not do recommend much more than enjoying what good time we had left with her. One day she was in the back going to the bathroom and she fell over in her own shit. There were some bad signs before that but we didn't realize how bad it actually was for her until then. Had to put her to sleep, was horrible and it was the gfs first dog 10+ yrs with it so se was nuts. She can never be replaced but the hole left by her absence was too much for the gf. Took two 85 lb dogs and 2 cats before she started to heal. If your dog is suffering, you are probably doing whats best. For what it is worth, the process is painless other than the pinch of the shot and quick. Best of luck Edit: I linked this video a while back for another gfyer who had a similar situation. It is a sad story but helpful if you have never been through the process. You can see how its like when you have to put a dog to sleep. I saw it before I had to put mine and though it was painful, the video was comforting in a sense, to see how quickly and painlessly the process is. |
hey at least he had a loving home :)
sorry for your loss man. |
Sorry to hear about Skufty. I lost my shadow about a month ago, and I still have some days where it is tough to deal with. RIP Skufty
|
Awww man I'm sooooo sorry to hear this Scott! I wish there was something I could say or do to take the pain away.
:( |
Sorry to hear, i like dogs and cats. I had great dog for over 10 years too, died few years ago. It was best dog you can have, always ready to make you smile, it was like little bomb, my cuter dog, i know you lost dear friend
|
So very sorry to hear this mate. I know this feeling only too well. :(
I often say the biggest compliment that one can pay their lost friend is give it a week or two and then go and re-home another dog who hasn`t got a master. You wouldn`t be rescuing a dog to replace Skufty but another dog sometimes helps to fill the massive hole that he`s left behind. |
Im sorry for your pain Scott ,u have a good heart. Take it from someone who had to put a dog down. Have it done in the house so his last moments arent in a strange place. Let him go in the place he loved you and you loved him.
|
Ah thats really sad :(.
Stay strong..... |
I've had to put two dogs down in the last year. It's always tough. It is important to remember though that they have no concept of life or death. They don't want to live forever because they have no understanding of the idea. All they know is the now. It's us that suffers and not so much them.
|
Sorry Scott. Losing a beloved pet and friend is extremely tough.
|
my heart goes out to you Scott. I know Skufty means the world to you. All my love

I always remember seeing those pics of Skufty's balls around here...
It sucks losing a dog. I had to put one down in '99 and one in '09. It's never easy. |
Hi Scott,
aww so sorry to hear about your Skufty :( |
Sorry to hear that man.
|
Sorry for your loss. Genuinely sorry.
Posted this before, maybe worth a repost. Quote:
The problem with pets is that it's like dealing with your mom or your kids. Or perhaps your father, depending on your upbringing. It's ALWAYS personal with pets. Every single fucking time. And that's where they get you. I've lost more than 1 dog over the course of my 28 years, but if I ever have to jump in front of a speeding train, at least I'll be no more than a few seconds away from plenty of genuine buddies to keep me company for the rest of eternity. :thumbsup Well, fuck it. Train or no train, once I've served my time in this shithole, I'll make it there eventually. Can't wait. ... unless I get sent to straight to fucking hell, which is very possible. No dogs in hell you know, not a single one. Seriously. :2 cents: |
