Do you collect anything as a hobby?

I want a hobby - I tried photography recently - That didn't go well - I fancied doing 'macro' so I have about 500 blurry pics of ladybugs...

So I thought I would collect something - Any ideas?

I would love to get back into aquariums but I don't know if I am going to settle here or in Spain (or possibly NZ) so its not practical...

Whats interesting to collect but wont break the bank?

MaDalton 04-07-2013 02:55 PM

hangovers - they can be expensive though

I have been collecting those for years - I have some of the most expensive around...

Taxidermy. Just scored myself a black bear mount last week. At first it started out as a way of decorating my house, but now it is approaching crazy cat lady status.

I don't think you can get stuffed animals into NZ - It would have to be roadkill as well - I am not a fan of hunting...

Funnily enough I had one at the shop I owned before - It turns out I am allergic - Its not the venom but the hair - I have a really bad reaction to it.

Hobbies are more about - "What do you like". You should probably figure that out on your own. Or ask close friends and family for observations based upon their knowledge of you.

As for me, I like girls, but they are damn expensive to keep around the house, and seem to break (and run) easily.

Sly 04-07-2013 03:10 PM

If you have to ask others what you should collect, then you are not a collector. Find a different hobby.

That's a cool one - I was thinking something mega niche like that - Something that would get me out and about to find shit...

I have a boat load of old comic books stuffed away in a closet at my parents house. What is your rarest or most expensive comic?

CurrentlySober 04-07-2013 03:16 PM

Stool Samples. Put them on slides like Dexter, and enjoy them under a microscope.

a badly damaged amazing fantasy #15, when i was a kid i drew my name on the front cover and filled in the forms on the back for all the old toys they try and sell you. im crushed about it still to this day.

also why not try metal detecting, looks fun especially if you live in a place with a long history.

Btw how do i embed videos???

also, i bought those glasses for $6 and seen them for sale online for around $200, not a bad score.

Metal detecting is on the list - Its big here as you can imagine and there are all sorts of rules and regulations that suck the fun out of it.

Youtube vids - [yoputube]code[/youtube] - Code is the unique string at the end of YouTube url...

Last few years I have started collecting Hot Wheels. Mainly getting limited editions and finding older rare cars.

NiXXiN 04-07-2013 03:32 PM

go on craigslist and see what people are selling.

I have a few thousand vinyl LP records, including many rare and autographed covers, plus I have a fair number of autographed books. I can't say that it is a serious hobby, since I never sell or trade items from my collections. At least I don't break into sweats when I go into record stores like I used to when I was younger, and I regularly went shopping for rare records at used record stores, garage sales, and flea markets.

I've never had any of my collection appraised since I'm not interested in selling any of it - it's just there for my pure pleasure.

I stopped about ten years ago but still have a bunch still in the packages. 1969 and 1970s, I forget what they called the ones that show the engines but some I see on ebay for 3000 bucks depending on the colors. I need to sell them now that I think about it.

candyflip 04-07-2013 03:43 PM

I buy and sell anything that might turn a profit. It's still a hobby at this point, but I have fun doing it.

I was just going to mention hoarders. Why don't you take up knitting and knit pretty hats and mittens for homeless people.

Buy an old car and fix it up.

Two years ago or so I decided it would be good to have a third car in case our two main daily drivers went into the shop. I also thought it would be good to have a truck for hauling stuff and buying furniture and what. I was never a truck person... But I always wanted a 4x4 and when it came to trucks, I really liked the way the old Chevy Step Sides look. To make a long story short.... I bought a twenty-three year old 4x4 an fixed it up over the past two years, it looks like it's brand new, and it's become indispensable- we use it for everything from camping to shopping to dump runs.

I'm not a car person and could never fix anything, so I learned slowly. What I couldn't do myself I had a local mechanic do.

Since then I've been shopping Craigslist. That car you wanted when you were a kid twenty years ago (okay, thirty years ago)... Are dirt cheap. Go pick up an old Trans Am or a beat up convertible, fix it up, and have fun with it. I always wanted a late 1980s Monte Carlo SS or the Smokey And The Bandit car... Or maybe just an older Mustang.

I've ALWAYS wanted a convertible....

Perhaps you didn't give the photography enough time and effort. How long were you at it?

Although I'm formally educated and trained in photography - I didn't just pick up a camera and start cranking out Dean Capture quality shots from the start. It takes a while to get proficient...and you can get rusty very fast if you get away from it for a while.

Why not give it another shot? (pun intended) :)
