Anyone have an Ikea kitchen?

Until last night, I had never been to an Ikea store. It was not what I expected. It herded you thru everything they had to make sure you saw everything, then half way thru, they had a cafeteria with a special on meatballs.
I want to remodel my kitchen and they have some cool set ups. Even saw a desk I want to get. I like the prices.
Has anyone remodeled their kitchen with their products and if so, are you happy with it and was it easy to assemble?

bns666 05-21-2014 11:34 AM

i have table and chairs from there, chairs are quite good, table (surface) is not too good.

all in all - what you pay is what you get, of course there is much better stuff, but this was really cheap 5-6yrs ago when i was buying it and it still holds up.

Chris 05-21-2014 11:38 AM

i personally dont but a friend redid his kitchen from ikea
cabinets counters fridge everything

it looks good imo - just will have to see how long it holds up

Jim_Gunn 05-21-2014 11:41 AM

I have Ikea bedroom furniture, Ikea living room furniture and even a dinette table and chair near my kitchen but not actual kitchen cabinets or appliances from there. I do like the value on their furniture.

CourtneyR 05-21-2014 11:43 AM

I love putting their stuff together, but if you are looking for something for the long haul look somewhere else. Ikea is not the kind of furniture you bring with you if you move.

BlackCrayon 05-21-2014 11:43 AM

yeah looks nice when its new but its all pressboard garbage, not real wood.

Built with cheap and easy in mind. Has some applications, but to me it would be a waste on a kitchen. Lost value when it comes time to sell.

Kman 05-21-2014 11:50 AM

Yes. I installed one in my house about six years ago, then sold the home.
Overall, it was beautiful. An excellent product. It cost me about 30% of what a contractor would have charged to install a comparative kitchen.
Being 'boxed' products, you will be on your knees for hours with screwdrivers and hinges for assembly. Tons of recycle cardboard to deal with.
The only problem I encountered was an annoying supply issue.
After mapping out the many units and pieces required I head down to Ikea. They had 75% of what I needed. The other pieces were 'out of stock'. This required a few trips over a few weeks as items slowly trickled in. Things like cabinet doors and drawer faces.
I did not use Ikea counter tops, or sinks/plumbing. I purchased those from a Hardware chain.

michael.kickass 05-21-2014 11:57 AM

Nope, but would love to have one.

JA$ON 05-21-2014 12:03 PM

pornguy 05-21-2014 12:13 PM

Some times even the more expensive stuff is not soo good. The wife without asking me about it bought a dining table. 1.2k for it. Legs are made of Pine and beat to shit from moving chairs etc.

czarina 05-21-2014 12:14 PM

This one at least, looks pretty nice:

Yeah, they look pretty good, I have a good friend that's a cabinet maker and he uses press board all the time.

I have no problems on assembly, I own more tools than probably anyone on this forum. My step father was a Machinist and my father sold snap on tools for a while, so I have the best of everything. I figure if I do this, I will have my buddy who is a contractor come in and do the tile work, then assemble all the cabinets myself. I already have new appliances except for the oven and range, so I will have to buy that, but it looks like I can do this for under 3k. This on a condo that I will probably stay ion for the next 5 to 10 years before I buy property to build a complete house, looking at log cabin kit houses, they're pretty cool.

Damn dude, they were pretty good, same as Costco, but not as good as home made, but what is? For the price, it was a cheap dinner. Damn things stuffed me!

Yeah, I think if they don't have everything, I'll buy what I can and wait till I have everything till I start the job, how long did it take before they got the rest of your order?

I sat in one of their office chairs, I liked it, even some of the other office stuff was pretty cool

Since you are still unemployed, putting Ikea kitchens together is good option for the close future :thumbsup

OY 05-21-2014 12:46 PM

In the 70 and 80s they were shit. In the 90s they began to improve. Now, their products are close to par with many of the better brands.

However, I know you V, and you are tall, so make sure you get the added height and the extra thick counter-tops to ease your back as you are cooking.

IKEA is nice now, not compared to before. Just dont get their cheapest versions.

I'm sorry, who are you again and why does it matter what you say? I'm not unemployed, so you are just posting out of hate or some possible mental issue I guess, but whatever the reason, Go Fuck Yourself......

I can get a deal on a granite counter, so I might go that route, and yes, I liked the height of the cabinets and that you can add a little to the height pretty easy. Most of the stuff I have re done in my place is for taller people. Like Handy cap toilets that are 17 inches high so my junk doesn't get wet.
We are getting what we want, I have been cutting costs on some things, but I won't get crap. Thanks for the input OY

exactly. most of their products may not even last if you don't move ... lol

some of their stuff is pretty sturdy but its not the cheap items.

They are excellent if you are a broke ass motherfucker, like a student.

Good for people that can't afford better.

I would rather save money on a house that I'm going to live in for the next few years and do other things with my money.

Like my trip I just took to China

Nice_Nick 05-21-2014 02:07 PM

Damian lives in a pokey 2 bed flat, ignore him.

Most of the stuff is made not in Sweden, but in lower cost countries.

Oh, I've got a new little Markham!

You're so cute. Tired after working your two jobs? I'm being flown to Italy tomorrow for some meetings. You have fun stealing money from your family. See you next week.

I have been buying IKEA ware for over 20 years now ... They have furnished quite a few of my houses and all of my personal offices.

They are awesome 1st furniture where you need some nice gear to outfit your space. It is a very clean, minimal style that functions nicely. Their stuff lasts about 5 or so years from everyday use I have learned, but by then you are looking for the "nice furniture" that will make it 20+ / heirloom pieces.

I had an entire kitchen (minus appliances ) installed in my last house and they were great. easy to assemble and held up for the few years I lived there and sold the house. The hoses and clamps - I would recommend knowing where your plumbing supply houses are as the stock Ikea ones suck ...

Currently I have my entire office in my house is IKEA ware. Their desks and cabinets are awesome... just make sure to get the reinforced desktops so the monitors / daily use dont cause a bend.

If you are nearby one - You'll become addicted.... They do make nice things that you can have for a while and their return policies are really nice.

and the meatballs are outstanding.

There is a saying we have around here that has 3 Ikea's nearby - You are not a couple with someone until you roll thru Ikea together looking at all the stuff you'd get for your home.

Truth be told, you can do a better kitchen with flat pack plywood parts with hardwood frames and doors from the boats, then with IKEA. All depends on what the final look you are going for, euro, or faceframe, painted or stain grade. Careful with the granite, lots of maintenance with the natural stone, and staining, Quartz should be the option. If you decide to go cheap, keep your options open, cabinetry has never been more affordable. Good luck with the build!

VSKevin 05-21-2014 03:39 PM

Shit looks nice from IKEA, but you pay for what you get. I furnished my whole living room for like $10. :P Definitely not stuff you take with you when you move.

wouldn't do it.... every piece of Ikea I've had has fallen apart PLUS it's about 7/8 real size :2 cents:

upforit_sarah 05-21-2014 05:04 PM

My brother has an Ikea kitchen. It looked great for the first few years... Now it is just okay.

Drake 05-21-2014 05:06 PM

Have used ikea furniture in rooms I've rented out. It looks nice. I wouldn't do an ikea kitchen though since that's a place for lots of wear and tear. Ultimately, I think it may hurt the resale value if your home.

A mate of mine would go to IKEA all the time, jsut for the meatballs. He roped me into going one time and I couldn't eat more than one bite, they were disgusting, I would rather eat macca's or some other shitty food and I hate eating macca's.
