Famemonster 09-28-2014 02:41 PM

He is smoking, snorting, or drinking the 20 bucks now. I usually tell people that ask for money to come with me to the deli and I'll buy them lunch or whatever. I cannot tell you how many people have turned me down, sad IMO.

sandman! 09-28-2014 02:51 PM

Agree. Never give cash. My bf and I will offer to buy street people who approach us a couple slices of pizza, a sandwich, cold bottled water on a hot day, hot coffee on a cold day. Only one time in several years did someone take us up on the bottle of water. No food offers have ever been accepted.

SBJ 09-28-2014 02:55 PM

he prolly bought a $5 starbucks and put the rest in his BMW's gas tank.

just a hunch, but they probably want to escape into an alcohol or drug-induced haze to escape it all, rather than want a sandwich.

In his book "Exit Ramp: A Short Case Study of the Profitability of Panhandling," the 31-year-old Iraq War veteran documents a two-week period spent as an undercover panhandler. With a clipboard attached to the back of his cardboard sign, he gathered info about the cash and the people who gave it to him.

"From an economist's view, there is a lot of incentive to panhandle," Spears said.

Over the course of his study, he earned an average hourly rate of $11.08, more than his last job working mall security. With taxes, a person would have to earn about $13 an hour to get the same pay rate, he said. On his best day, he made $24.63 per hour ? nearly three times Oregon's minimum wage ? and on his worst day, which was also his first day, he collected $5.13 per hour. Lunchtime proved to be the most profitable, when he would consistently earn above minimum wage.

Besides money, he got more than $80 in gifts ? sports drinks, gift cards, cigarettes, beer, bottled water, beef jerky, homeless care packages ? as well as some sage advice and even a job offer. Vets and Veterans Affairs caseworkers offered him rides to the local office.

This guy made $11 an hour panhandling. :)

Was he disabled and not fit for work? Otherwise it is a bad deed to encourage those lazy leechers who would use it for booze.

Hookers and blow.

SilentKnight 09-28-2014 06:30 PM

Not good to give cash.

Tell'em to get a merchant account and accept MC and Visa.

I use this when I beg for money.

Juicy your post and the replies struck a nerve with me. I used to have money but then lost everything within a few years due to the hatemonger child abusing civilization destroying psychopaths in the family court system who HATE children, HATE fathers, and HATE families. I am doing OK again now but still trying to to a point where I am comfortable and can travel, drive nice cars, and have a really nice home.
Anyway I was filling up my truck with gas this afternoon and I heard some guy moaning. I noticed it was a guy holding a sign on the side of the road. I watched him for a while and nobody was giving him any money.
So I could not get your post out of my head and wanted to do something nice for him. I also wondered if he would just spend it on beer. I walked over to him and talked to him for a bit. He said he hardly ever drank and that he was disabled. I gave him some money and told him that someone inspired me to do something nice for someone today. I also gave him some pointers on how to make more money. I told him to stop moaning because that just scares people away. I told him to just wave and smile if possible and I was positive he would make way more money. Then I asked him if he would let me take a pic. I turned his sign around and wrote something on it for you would know you helped out another guy on the other side of the country. "Dave" thanks you. And before I left I gave him a hug. He was very thankful, I think it had been a while since he was hugged. I did not smell any alcohol on him so I think he was telling the truth. I photoshoped some sunglasses on him to protect his identity.
I challege the resident GFY social justice warriors to go out and hug a homeless guy and make him feel loved.

Good deed undone by posting about it. True good deeds and selfless acts don't need or seek recognition.

Sorry but I disagree with you. Juicy inspired me and today "Dave" got some cash, some marketing tips, and a hug.

I had a guy come up once and say he was gonna buy booze, gave him the money cause I dug his honesty and Chicago be cold in da winter. I give dough here and there depends on my mood at the moment. One day I'll be like fuck off you fucking fuck and the next day I'll throw $5-$10 at a dude just depends if I got time or got too much shit going on.

Ok thanks I deleted it. I gave him $10 but the marketing tips (which were to stop moaning, smile, and wave) were priceless.

I think your gift was noble, however, you ruined it by using it to gain attention and compliments.

Helping people in itself is the reward. It's not done so you can pat yourself on the back openly in the public's eye.

Shame on your vanity and your ego. When you help somebody, do it because you want to, and not for a reward after the fact.

brassmonkey 09-28-2014 08:45 PM

did you ask him for a favor?

Things like the ice bucket challenge are done in order to raise awareness for various diseases, cancers and shit like that...
