SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Randy Gardner still struggles four years later to talk about seeing his brother's bullet-ridden body at the mortuary after he was executed.

Ronnie Lee Gardner was the last person to die by firing squad in Utah ? a method state lawmakers voted this week to reinstate, illustrating frustrations across the U.S. over bungled executions and shortages of lethal-injection drugs.

Randy Gardner made it clear Wednesday he did not condone what his brother did ? first killing a bartender and later shooting a lawyer to death and wounding a bailiff during a courthouse escape attempt.

But he said the firing squad is brutal.

"When you take somebody and you tie them to a chair, put a hood over their head, and you shoot them from 25 feet with four rifles pointed at their heart, that's pretty barbaric."

What is the humane way to execute people anyway?

Not in opposition of the death penalty with legal due process.

But killing is never "clean".

What is the problem with the shooting? Not any less humane than other most popular methods. Actually I consider shooting being more humane than killing with meds/poison.

Wrong. Where I'm, every human has a freedom to live. Even if a cop (something like a God in your world) will take it away, he will face a prison time (usually for the end of his ages). Feel the difference...

If we're going to kill prisoners, I don't see how it's any less humane than injecting some half-ass medical cocktail that may or may not work. A firing squad is cheaper and will be instant death.

Fun fact about firing squads...usually one of the guns has a "conscience round" which is a blank cartridge, so every squad member can know there's a possibility he didn't fire the fatal shot.

what's the age requirement for executioners? I know for ISIS it's ~12 years old, I'm figuring since this is the USA and all, it's 18 years old?

This boils down to a religious issue. A Mormon religious issue. The two states with a tradition of firing squads - Utah and Idaho - both have strong Mormon foundations from the time of their settlement. Under Mormon theology, some kinds of sins - particularly homicide/murder - will only be forgiven by God by the shedding of the offender's blood. Literally. And that explains the sympathy for at least optional firing squads in states with big Mormon populations. When Gary Gilmore, a Mormon, chose the firing squad, it with his salvation in mind.

No, but there is better solution: take a remote island miles from land, and drop them with parachute. Let them live there if they can survive. Just one satellite to watch if someone try to escape. Just drop them without anything. That's it. They have some chance to survive, and if they do, that would be hell to live in society of lifetime convicts. Costs are initial and that is all.
