Brutal attack on tourists in Thailand caught on video

A British couple and their son were savagely attacked during a family vacation in Thailand in the latest blow to the country's image as a welcoming tourist paradise. Police said Thursday they have arrested the four suspected attackers.

A video of the attack, which was captured by overhead security cameras and posted this week on social media, has stirred shock and outrage over its brutality and the ages of the victims, a 65-year-old woman and 68-year-old man from Scotland and their 43-year-old son. The attack is the latest act of violence against tourists in the Southeast Asian country.

In the video the family is seen walking down a crowded street in the beach town of Hua Hin on the evening of April 13, amid festivities for the Thai New Year.

An altercation breaks out with a group of men on the street who punch all three in the face, kick their bodies and stomp on their faces in an attack that lasts about 2 minutes.

Police Col. Chaiyakorn Sriladecho said it started after "the son accidentally bumped into one of the Thai men."

The attack stops only when all three victims are seen lying apparently unconscious on the ground. As the Thai gang disappears, bystanders come to their aid.

"We have now arrested all four suspects," Chaiyakorn said. Three of the men were arrested within days of the incident and the fourth on Thursday, he said, identifying them as in their 20s and 30s.

"The men say they are sorry and that they wouldn't have done this if they weren't drunk," he said.

The father and son suffered head injuries requiring stitches, Chaiyakorn said. The mother received serious eye and head injuries that caused a buildup of fluid in the brain and required an operation, he said.

In March, four French tourists were assaulted on the island of Koh Kut as they walked to dinner. They included a mother and daughter who were both raped.

Two British backpackers were murdered on the island of Koh Tao in 2014. Autopsies showed the couple, a young man and woman, had been severely beaten and the woman raped. Two Myanmar migrants were convicted of the crime based on DNA evidence that rights groups say was questionable.

I don't know what the problem is with Thailand but they sure are "illogically" violent against foreigners. This is going to be another big blow to tourism over there.

It looks like some altercation was happening there before they arrived on the scene and it looks as though they walked into it. You also can see the mother clearly get "powerfully" kicked in the face.

Very brutal and especially sad.....

I was in Thailand twice in the space of 3 weeks, spent a grand total of 3.5 weeks there and never saw one piece of violence or fighting. Roughly 30 million tourists go to Thailand per year, how many cases of violence towards tourists do you hear of per year?

This attack was sickening, especially the bitch who hit the old woman but it I don't think you can say there is violence towards foreigners. Every country has problems with idiots making the rest of their Country look bad, Thailand is no different but it is a relatively safe place to be and I don't think tourism will drop anytime soon.

they appear to be drunk in the video :2 cents::2 cents:

Although I don't live in Thailand I've spent a lot of time there and I do permanently live in the region i.e. South East Asia and I can just tell you there is a deep underlying resentment towards westerners.

That's not to say that violence is common but it does happen and it seems to be at least more common in Thailand versus other parts of SE Asia. There have also been some other cases:

I have visited Thailand 1-2 times per year and never seen any violence or even aggression towards tourist. Thais are predominantly the most peaceful freindly people on the planet. A few bad apples and the whole countries going to shit...

Imagine if people based their US tourism on our gun violence data, we would have no tourists at all.

Well they are mostly peaceful but this kind of thing is happening more and more in Thailand. At the end of day it depends on what you're comparing against - compared with the US, Thailand is extremely peaceful.

However, this kind of thing happens more often in Thailand than in other countries in the region like Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia etc. As for wider Asia, well that would never happen in India or China.

Comparing it to Vietnam or Cambodia and making it seem worse is fine but compare it to parts of Europe or South America and it is a different story. There is assholes everywhere, these guys were drunk and it seems they were already angry or looking for trouble anyway, the slight bump from the guy was enough to send him over the top. Another day, another time, 1 foot to the right for the UK guy, this never happens.

Could it be Thailand attracts a bit different kind of tourist than the other countries you mention?

Anyway I have never encountered anything even close to this and I've been in many asian countries. Actually leaving for Thailand and Laos in 5 days, can't wait!!!!

DraX 04-30-2016 02:24 AM

Oh my god what a bunch of human tards, this is really brutal. What the fuck, knocking down a 60+ female.

I don't know if this has all to do with being intoxicated, I know there is an underlying resentment towards foreigners like someone mentioned earlier, not by all of course. I think one reason for this could be, foreigners spreading money in thailand but not all are affected by the wealth.

But I do think money is a major reason for the resentment.

Thai people do talk a lot among them self about things we will never hear about.

What would you do if this happened to you?

Put up a fight on their turf or split?

Just Alex 04-30-2016 02:40 AM

There is more to this story and why they got jumped.
Thai people are very tolerant. You get drunk and start fucking with then and act as if you own them = trouble
I can guarantee they said something to those guys before getting jumped.
I saved couple of Danes once in Samui from getting shit kicked out. They asked one of our girls for phone number and for a pen from Thai guy. Pen was't writing on guy's sweaty palm so he threw it away. Thai guy started screaming how important that pen was, how it was a gift for her kid. As soon as he started to scream there was about 10 Thai guys. I told them I will buy everyone a beer at K-circle and call tourist police if needed. 20 minutes later they took me to watch pussy pingpong and we hanged out at a club. They asked if I wanted some blow but I was afraid it would be a set up. 3 days prior, my Israeli friend got busted buying weed on a beach. Thai guy came up and asked if he wanted some. AS soon as bud gave kid the money, cops mowed in. Cost him 3K to get out.

Maybe be but I'm not saying anything against Thailand overall, just isolated incidents like this. It's a very awesome place, generally peaceful, self sufficient and economically is growing very fast which means upward trajectory in many, many respects.

So have a good trip and I plan to go in a couple months too....

true it.

Tasty1 04-30-2016 07:31 AM

Thai people aren't friendly when you don't treat them with respect, like in all countries. This are just some drunk Assholes. Thailand is number 1 country if you look at the nimbers of tourist visiting there every year, so problems can always happen.

I had a hooker who went completely nuts cause we where talking Dtch and see thought we where talking about her. Started throwning bottles, while we where on a safe distance laughing at that bitch. You could see sh was using Jabba. I saw a big tourist kicking a dog realy hard in the middle of a cafe. I wanted to punch that guy, but the Thai peole i know and that where there stopped me. 'Don't worry, we will take care'. When the guy stepped out of the cafe he was knocked out by 5 Thai, and they where right.

In Nana Plaza i was talking to an Australian guy who started complaining about the Thai and that he got beaten up at least 5 times. He was with a Thai girlfriend. After 10 minutes hearing him talk about Thai people and 'his Bitch' i completely understanded why he got beaten so many times, what an asshole.

But this incident is ridiculous. But it could be they said something bad that triggered it. Or hey are just sme drunk Thai assholes.

You can actually visit 'Bangkok Hilton', i visited a few times some Dutch people there. Some people visit Alcatraz, i visited Bangkok Hilton with real prisoners. Even helped one writing a book about this prison time and it became a bestseller in Holland.
