Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital on Wednesday and announced plans to relocate the US Embassy there, a move expected to inflame tensions in the region and unsettle the prospects for peace.

"I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," Trump said from White House's Diplomatic Reception Room. "After more than two decades of waivers, we are no closer to a lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians."
The move signaled a willingness on Trump's part to prioritize fulfilling a campaign promise over the consensus among US allies in the region and beyond that the decision could stymie the peace process and increase security risks in a region that is already on edge.
"Today, I am delivering," Trump said, referencing his campaign promise.

I failed to understand the point in any of this. Like everything else Trump does, it's like he makes a decision based on "what is the worst thing to do". There is no up side to this, and only bad things will come from it.

And yet the Senate just voted UNANIMOUSLY to do it. Every Senator...Democrat and Republican.

If you really think about it...it's stupid to pretend that we don't know Jerusalem is the capital. Especially when every world leader goes to JERUSALEM to meet with Israeli leaders in the capital.
And while every country has their Embassy in Tel Aviv...they don't do anything there. They all drive to JERUSALEM to their respective consul buildings and do their ambassador work there.

Can you imagine how stupid it would be if all country's moved their embassy's out of Washington D.C. to Atlanta and declared the U.S. didn't even have a capital?

At the same time, the international community, including the US, officially regards East Jerusalem as occupied territory. All embassies are based in Tel Aviv and always have been.

In fact, no.... According to law passed in 1995, there is a provision to postpone this "move" simply by the President signing a wavier. Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama signed this waiver every six months. Trump also signed this waiver.

The United Nations passed a resolution saying they do not Jerusalem as their capital, nor do any of the other countries accept Jerusalem as the capital.

This isn't like suddenly saying Washington DC is no longer our capital, but instead the United States invading Mexico, occupying Tijuana, and suddenly declaring Tijuana is our capital. I understand Israel wants Jerusalem to be their capital, but it's an occupied city, and they only occupy half of it.

Jerusalem was split in half in 1947 after WW2. Half to Israel (which became their capital) and half to JORDAN.

In the 6 day war of 1967 Israel captured ALL of that territory.

Jerusalem is the capital. You can say you don't "like" that. But it's a FACT and has been since 1947.

Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world Rochard. And it's been captured and held by different people's 44 times over thousands of years. It's even been completely destroyed twice.

Lots of people can claim ancient possession of the city.
Just like Native Americans can theoretically claim ancient possession of your house.
