Car Crash - My wife is lucky to be alive!

Last night at about 3:30am my wife fell asleep at the wheel about 2 miles from home and ran head on into a light pole. I got a call at about 4:40am that she had been in an accident and was informed she was in the ER.

I have to say that she is very lucky and I think she had an angel on her shoulder because when I got there she looked amazing for someone who had just been in a full front impact with a pole, she only suffered bruising and a cut inside lip.

The car however is completely totalled, and she hit the aluminum light pole so hard that it left an imprint of her 6 digit license plate on the pole. The engine was dropped out and moved toward the center of the car.. A gallon of milk she had just bought exploded in the car as well...

I think I'm still a bit more upset that my wife pushes herself so hard sometimes between work and sleep and she does not realize she was burning the candle at both ends.. It sucks that she had to learn the hard way that this is what happens without enough sleep.. I'm also glad that no one else was injured in this accident..

Next week I need to take her car shopping.. Sucky thing is she JUST made a car payment yesterday.. She could have kept that money still since her car is GONE!

seeric 12-17-2005 12:51 PM

oh shit man. thats horrible. someone was looking over her. wow.

Murderous 12-17-2005 12:53 PM

That could have been serious, glad she is ok... she is very lucky.

xNetworx 12-17-2005 12:57 PM

Damn.. she is lucky! I fell asleep at the wheel once on I55 in Illinois. My Dad was sleeping in the passenger seat and I was hungover. I woke up to the sound of gravel under the tires and panicked. I slammed on the brakes and tried to get the car back on the road. I did a 180 and ended up facing several 18 wheelers coming my way. luckily, I had time to drive back onto the shoulder. I waited for the trucks to pass and my Dad turned around and drove us home. That was the last time I ever drove his car. What I learned from the experience is this.... If your eyes start to close invoulentarily, STOP DRIVING IMMEDIATELY!

MikeyFingaz 12-17-2005 12:58 PM

sorry that that has happened to your family man, but i am glad none the less for you that she is ok... im not what you would call religious, but it sounds like someone or something was watching over her.

Tricksy 12-17-2005 12:59 PM

It's good she wasn't injured. U should work harder, so she won't work that much!

Ice 12-17-2005 12:59 PM

Sorry to hear man... but glad she is doing ok. :)

I couldnt agree more man... I am a big supporter of the road side power naps.. I travel from Oregon to California, and Oregon to Washington alot, and I am always pulling off to hotels, rest stops, side of the freeway.

One time I slept on a pullout on the side of I-5 for 6 hours... and a state trooper tapped on my window to see if I was ok.. he said my car had been there for a long time and he wanted to make sure I was not dead... But he said I should keep sleeping if I was tired..

justsexxx 12-17-2005 01:02 PM

So glad to hear she's ok, bro!

On Halloween my wife was going to pick up our daughter from school and about 5 blocks from the house this truck made a left hand turn and stalled as he was turning. Any other day he would have just made the turn and everyone would have went on their merry way - in this case there was nothing she could do. She was driving the legal limit of 50 mph at the time and slammed on the breaks and had the frame of mind to veer away from hitting them dead center (where there were 3 young children in the back seat screaming NOOOOO!). She hit the truck in the rear and flipped them around 180 degrees onto the sidewalk, knocking down a pole.

Her airbag deployed which left burns on her arms, she suffered some mild whiplash but other than that she was not hurt very badly JUST shaken up. The kids and the driver of the other truck were ok too, thank G-d!

It's just a wake up call that "life happens" - and we need to be thankful for what ever we have :winkwink:

Again, I'm glad your wife is ok :)

I didn't look first to see who wrote this post, but as soon as I saw G-d spelled written like that I thought to myself, "a Jewish poster wrote this..." then I checked to see who it was.

I love that. And I love the reasons for it.

Perfect! There's an AM/PM really close to the house, and a Starbucks as well. :)

WarChild 12-17-2005 01:30 PM

I have to agree. While I'm glad you're wife is OK, I'm also really glad no one else was hurt, killed, widowed or orphaned by her irresponsibility. Driving when you're that tired is just as bad as driving drunk, IMO.

SmokeyTheBear 12-17-2005 01:41 PM

I fell asleep in arizona one time and woke up as i was crashing through one of those highway miles signs , it went thru the windshield about 2 inches above my head.. ( then i had to drive home with my windshield all smashed out )

SilentKnight 12-17-2005 01:45 PM

Sorry to hear about your wife's misfortune...but good to hear she wasn't seriously injured. Your story hit close to home since my wife was also in an accident a few months ago and near totaled her car ($6,900 damage - insurance rebuilt the car).

Tired drivers seem to increasing these days what with our hectic pace of life, unfortunately. I think we're all guilty of it at some time or another. Hopefully this incident will help make her realize her limitations a little more and teach her to cut back on 'burning both ends of the candle', as you say.

angelro 12-17-2005 01:50 PM

uhm.. nasty hist :(... I'm glad she is ok... fuck the car... you can buy a car... you can never buy your wife again...

JFK 12-17-2005 01:52 PM

Happy to hear she's ok :thumbsup

dude glad to hear the wife is ok...I've driven alot of miles only starting to be smart nuff to pull over and sleep, I'm drive back east for Christmas next week and already booked a hotel mid way so I don;t push myself.

Poppy 12-17-2005 02:02 PM

Damn bro. So glad to hear she will be okay. I couldn't imagine someone dying like that, let alone during the Holiday season.

I always pull over when I feel the least bit tired. I had to pull over 4-5 times one time when driving back to San Diego from LA. That's a helluva lot of times to pull over for a 2hr drive, but I had to.

Sometimes I'll slap my face from time to time and that helps.

MattO 12-17-2005 02:03 PM

I fell asleep driving once going through Indiana. Woke up in a Tijuana whore house with a red donkey eating snap dragons out of my coat pocket.

Glad your wife's okay, that shit can be scary, especially for the one getting "the call" in the middle of the night.

I think it's time for your lady to start taking the bus.

You've had some scares.

Anyway, I'm glad both of your ladies are OK.
