Wood vs Carpet in a bedroom and why?

I've finally decided that it's time to do something with my master bedroom. It's approximately 17' x 14' with 10 foot ceilings. I'm contemplating putting in some medium to upper grade solid wood flooring with an area rug under and around the kingsize bed rather than recarpeting. My furniture is dark cherry wood. I'd figure on a darker wood for the floor. If I go with wood, I will likely change the bottom molding to wood and and similar crown molding up top (after I paint).

My reasoning for this is that there is a traffic area from my bedroom door to my master bath (straight shot). The rest of the carpet doesn't really get much wear, but that area has (carpet is about 18 years old now if it is the original carpet). Another option would be to just do wood in that traffic area and carpet the rest of the way over (think it might look odd).

The opposite side of this house is light. My kitchen, informal dining and walk way from foyer to that area is all maple wood that will eventually get replaced also (goes with the maple cabinets.

Do any of you have any experience with wood flooring in a master bedroom? Pros/cons etc?

thanks (yeah I know this is GFY and not decorators r us)

I have wood floors in my bedroom and love it. Just make sure to put a rug where you get into bed so you don't bring "dirt" from your feet into the bed (this may not be a problem for those of you with clean houses........)

I would go wood just because I dislike carpet... :-)

Hey PK, check DM.

We have old wooden floors in the bedrooms here, that we haven't replaced yet.

All I can say is I would go with a hard wood, and not a soft wood because I found out that is what we have and it scratches really easy. The areas where there was lots of foot traffic in what once was a kids room is really messed up too. I think they used the soft wood because it was cheaper, but it really didn't hold up well. Unless you are going for shabby chic, then the soft wood is ok.

Sent you a PM. Just finished it.

Libertine 08-22-2008 05:24 PM

Wood. Just try and get blood out of carpet... it's a nightmare.

Eriic 08-22-2008 05:31 PM

Wood looks better and feels better.

Carpet gets dirty and stained and smells and is harder to clean especially if your dog shits or pisses on it.

Wood has class. Carpet your Ass!

CDSmith 08-22-2008 05:36 PM

My bedroom has carpet but I'm thinking of going wood.

..oh wait, damn, I just pulled a "sly" :1orglaugh

Dave_Lethal 08-22-2008 05:36 PM

I think wood looks better there a few things about it that I don't like in my situation, (keep in my mind I rent a room with wood floors, I don't own my pad)

1. The Noise, every foot step is amplified which means I have to be overly concerned with the every foot step
2. No carpet means if I have guests who are going to spend the night, or hang out for the day, there is the constant issue of everyone being seated or sleeping comfortably.

I for more of a grown up person, its probably not an issue

bbm 08-22-2008 05:36 PM

I'll take wood, its easy to clean up

Grapesoda 08-22-2008 05:46 PM

have you considered leather?

Go with wood.
You might want to look into Braziian Cherry. Its a naturally dark wood and very beautiful.
Also Bamboo makes a nice floor which comes in light as well as medium dark.

wood with carpet. Thats what I have and love it

baddog 08-22-2008 05:57 PM

Carpet is warmer in the winter.

CDSmith 08-22-2008 06:00 PM

Go with wood, then throw down a Persian rug.

:D

gornyhuy 08-22-2008 06:03 PM

Wood floors with oriental rugs to make it cozy.

Scootermuze 08-22-2008 06:06 PM

Carpet holds lots of bacteria, dust mites, etc.
Wood is healthier, has a warmer look and feel..
more homey..

I think you'd like the wood once it's down.. Rugs can be placed where ya don't want to see wood..

i second that

and its more funny to see cats chasing each other on a wooden floor where they lose grip all the time ;)

Snake Doctor 08-22-2008 06:19 PM

I have wood in the master bedroom. It's ok, but I live in a very warm climate.

If I lived in Washington State I would probably prefer carpet for the bedroom.

If you got a tough grade of carpet, like berber, the wear on that path won't be so bad either.

Even funnier is watching your dogs try to chase your cats and basically run in place before they fall on their face.

:1orglaugh you gotta get that on cam

teentime 08-22-2008 06:27 PM

Many people experience a change in their sex life once the carpet is removed from the bedroom.
Wood is hard and cold and noisier too.
I guess it just depends on ones sexual lifestyle.

Drake 08-22-2008 06:31 PM

Wood FTW

x-rate 08-22-2008 06:31 PM

wood... if you have big dog I recommand laminated floor....there's some really nice ones!

Oh yeah....I keep forgetting. Every night when I let the dogs in, they run to their beds and then go over to my cat Morris who licks them on the head.
They take turns getting their heads licked. If they pull away before the cat is done, he grabs their nose with his claws and pulls them back.

So every night around 10PM or so I've got two dogs covered in cat saliva and one fat cat drenched in dog saliva. I keep forgetting to film it though.

ungratefulninja 08-22-2008 06:37 PM

I like hardwood especially with puppy messes or the occasional cat coughing up a furball, it's just easier to clean.

I underestimated how cold it can feel in the winter, though. I invested in some slippers :)

SuzzyQ 08-22-2008 08:04 PM

We have hardwood oak through out the whole house with throw rugs. If you coordinate the rugs with the floor, it looks really nice. Believe it or not, its not too bad in the winter.

footmonkey 08-22-2008 09:12 PM

I like wood but it looks dirty quickly so you're always sweeping up whereas with carpet you wouldn't notice.

venus 08-22-2008 09:43 PM

you may want to look at wood laminate (fake wood), it last longer, depending on what you get, can look exactly like real wood but without the problems. the fake wood is almost indestructable, I have it in my entire house, even my kids rooms, exception is my bed room, gotta have carpet in my room. If you go with a high quality carpet (ones that are in the $50+ per sq ft) then it will last.

stevo 08-22-2008 10:01 PM

Do you have dogs?

I just spent 12k on my living room wood floors and my black lab has scratched the fuck out of them. I should have bought the cheap shit and it would have lasted longer :winkwink:

Spunky 08-22-2008 10:25 PM

Red shag.chicks dig it

Jim_Gunn 08-23-2008 12:34 AM

Carpet is nasty, wood all the way

After Shock Media 08-23-2008 12:38 AM

Carpet is the evil. It is home to things that make me shudder even in the cleanest of houses. If you must have some softness like it use an area rug that can get cleaned properly and just cover the areas you need. They do come in all shapes and sizes.

Zorgman 08-23-2008 12:47 AM

I don't like wood in any room as I tend to move things around and scratch the floor.

WWC 08-23-2008 12:50 AM

Wood floors all over my house....carpet stinks...if you only new all the dirt, bugs, etc live in carpet and vacuuming doesnt help....and then you start getting a smell after awhile....
