Why do we use ICQ?

I've had ICQ installed in various computers since the mid 90's ( it feels).
Why are we still using such an old message system, almost all adult webmasters use it. What's so great about it?
I can barely connect to the server, never mind trying to change settings on my profile. I can't do that for the love of fuck.
Just wondurrin...

sue 02-17-2009 01:38 PM

Good question. Maybe because we are addicted to the horrible sound when someone is contacting you:-) On the other hand I know when my icq goes off that it is business related, when it is one of the others it is personal and probably not urgent.

*hugs and kisses*

munki 02-17-2009 01:38 PM

So we can show off how few digits are in our ICQ of course...

HookUPcom 02-17-2009 01:41 PM

i think it's so we can talk to ourselves... I notice when I'm using it, I'm saying the same thing a few times before I type it... And I can type at a decent speed. But I guess I do that here even more... man what a frickin waste of time both of these are.... ;)

StuartD 02-17-2009 01:43 PM

Well, when you try to do business and discover that 99% of the people you could potentially do business with all use ICQ....

you use it.

:2 cents:

Jim_Gunn 02-17-2009 01:45 PM

Exactly. That's how it started and the industry keeps using it, so too late to change. I love icq.

alexchechs 02-17-2009 02:11 PM

I use AIM (iCHAT) way more than ICQ but because so many people in the industry use it I have to have an account and have it open all day...

chelis 02-17-2009 02:13 PM

No idea, but I guess we already cross the point of no return! :2 cents:

PR_Sebas 02-17-2009 02:16 PM

Because we're webmasters and we like to complain... it gives us another thing to complain about.

baddog 02-17-2009 02:18 PM

The history feature . . . and as mentioned earlier, it is the standard.

Walter Gropius 02-17-2009 02:18 PM

I always figured it's because nobody wants their e-mail address published all over forums, websites etc due to the risk (guarantee) that they'll get spammed to buggery. The main alternative is probably MSN Messenger and that uses e-mail addresses for user IDs / logins.

Marcus Aurelius 02-17-2009 02:19 PM

yeah the history feature is the #1 reason. plus almost everyone in this industry uses it, faults and all. I don't see ICQ going away from adult anytime soon.

Khulan 02-17-2009 02:20 PM

So do you think if there is better message system rather than ICQ?

kane 02-17-2009 02:21 PM

Some of it, I think, is because it has been around for a while. Back when I first started in this biz it was really the only good IM type of program so it was what everyone used. I think sticking with it is just easier for most people than changing. I have had a few business contacts tell me they have changed to other services so maybe there is a slow change beginning.

CIVMatt 02-17-2009 02:21 PM

ok11100134222 has added you

Tom_PM 02-17-2009 02:38 PM

Every program should have their own messenger with subtle advertising, but not too pushy.

Thats the second idea I've given away in 24 hours. Go for it.

Antonio 02-17-2009 02:38 PM

don't know about you, I use postal pigeons

u-Bob 02-17-2009 02:39 PM

1. It's oldskool.
2. If you put "Contact: 123-123-95" on a page, only other webmasters know what that means.
3. It's been around for ages so almost every webmaster has an account there.
4. lots of different clients...
5. history.

brassmonkey 02-17-2009 02:42 PM

i use miranda i dont have the volume on

cykoe6 02-17-2009 02:46 PM

I like ICQ.

peeperpimp 02-17-2009 02:49 PM

Another reason might be that not to many ppl outside of the industry use it.

So it's less likely that you will get someone trying to contact you, just for meaningless chatter that will waste your time. ( just my :2 cents: )

Sid70 02-17-2009 02:53 PM

i would move to skype but still i have a ton of ICQ clients, so the day Skype integrates ICQ in I will.

mynameisjim 02-17-2009 02:55 PM

So I can keep in touch with Russian girls who want to say hi and type in characters I can't understand.

Loki 02-17-2009 04:18 PM

I'm completely different, I hate talking on the phone. I will even go out of my way to avoid it most of the time.

Same, I can have 7 conversations on the go, and be working on 3 different things... but once that damn phone rings, everything stops until I hang it up.

If it's a meeting or something I need to give my attention to, fine... but otherwise, my world just came to a screeching halt just cause someone's unable to articulate themselves well enough in text form.

eroticsexxx 02-17-2009 05:10 PM

Have an icq account, but use it with trillian.

rayadp05 02-17-2009 05:13 PM

I don't mind using ICQ at all and the main reason why I use it is because so many other webmasters in the industry use it.

Isn't AIM and ICQ interchangeable and you can go cross platform with accounts on either of them.

Spunky 02-17-2009 05:39 PM

It's been around for a long time and used by so many people

Yeah you can add AIM names to ICQ and I believe vice versa.

seeric 02-17-2009 06:40 PM

i use skype mostly. i loathe and ignore icq but keep an account on my adium open in case someone leaks through thats important. otherwise, as far as IMing goes i'm in the 2009 era and am on skype w/ video. this industry needs to get with the plan. and its secure. /whine.

HomerSimpson 02-17-2009 07:02 PM

legacy from the past...
I use Google Talk the most today, have lots of friends on MSN, but all biz only at ICQ...

james_clickmemedia 02-17-2009 07:48 PM

because it was the only thing around in the late 1990's..
I remember attending mirc chat rooms back in the day.

AtlantisCash 02-17-2009 08:01 PM

as being an Ole School webmaster, i can't change some of my habits and i don't want to change them either, icq sounds for more business related to me rather then other instant messaging programs.
