The Rep Thing

i thought it was a pretty lame idea when they first started it (and in some ways, still do), but it seems to have changed the landscape of GFY a bit. kind of cool. not nearly as much trolling. i doubt that will last. sort of an interesting social experiment.

True, but i'm still confused as to why it actually matters lol.

Still, if it helps, it helps...

i don't really understand it's purpose either, but then I don't understand half of the things they do around here. :2 cents:

you're almost at 10K posts. hurry up, and rep me ;)

just another tool to let people estroke each other. i'll pass.

Profits of Doom 10-17-2010 10:06 AM

I think what they really need on here in addition to the rep is an "iTrader" feature similar to what DP and the other mainstream webmaster forums have. There are people on here everyday that have services I might be interested in purchasing, but when they have no track record I can't bring myself to pull the trigger. The iTrader can be manipulated just like the rep, but people that have hundreds of positive iTrader transactions would be way more likely to get my business...

Forkbeard 10-17-2010 10:06 AM

I still don't understand the reasoning behind the allocation of the power to rep people. I'm kinda proud of the fact that I'll never make 10,000 posts because I'm not a bot or a sig whore and I only speak up when I have something to say, but I think my opinion on this board carries as much weight as many of the "colored names" who got that way through shitposting. So why are they the ones doling out the reputations? I don't understand the point, really. It sorta seems like it would make more sense if the old-timers who aren't high-volume posters ought to be part of the system, if the system is to be anything but worthless.

yeah, i agree as well. it could be more date based than post based. yet another social experiment.

Agent 488 10-17-2010 10:09 AM

i give my rep to trolls mostly so who knows if it means anything in the end.

I agree, it's something to do...

JustDaveXxx 10-17-2010 10:35 AM

Its kind of funny, but i notice a lot less trolling and fighting over stupid shit.

Im guessing the true trolls will be painted in red over time. Don't know for sure, just my guess.

We will see. Time will tell.

iTrader on DP gets manipulated like crazy.

alias 10-17-2010 01:50 PM

I like it.

cherrylula 10-17-2010 02:10 PM

yeah I kind of like it too, seems some people shut the fuck up now.

but there are still plenty of psycho asshole losers on this board, lol

borked 10-17-2010 02:18 PM

At first, I was frustrated at the 10k post thing to be able to give rep. Then I was totally disappointed to find out how it was being abused (it was to be expected really).

However, because of all that, it makes me notice" regular nicks more that I've never read before. The "real" people that have interesting things to say... a breath of fresh air

Excellent idea. I love the iTrader function on DP.

Exactly.

Moose 10-17-2010 02:45 PM

Its stupid, it should be based off of time here or something besides post whoring, im sure some etard who posts 100 times a day will give me a negative rep for this.

It's a weird setup here. On other forums where you actually have feedback on sales reputation is another factor to consider making it more important. I've also seen implementations where to leave someone a negative red you would also lose some rep points, this cut out all the trade for rep posts.

I don't care either way, just think it's funny to see a negative rep pop up when I piss someone off.

Mutt 10-17-2010 03:20 PM

i think it's lame - GFY's success was built on being anti-establishment and irreverent.

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 10-17-2010 03:25 PM

iTrader makes sense, Rep does not.

NOW REP ME CUNTS!

all i see is trolls with a ton of rep..i don't see how that cleans up the board

Adam_M 10-17-2010 04:25 PM

I would like to see it changed so people who have been a member for 6 or 7 years get the power to rep. I don't think post count should really count for anything

Would have to kinda agree with you on this......:2 cents:

Jayvis 10-17-2010 04:58 PM

I agree with Adam on the post count thing... I think it also needs to develop the same set of "rules" things like Karma over at Reddit adopted and it could be good (ie not neg. repping someone just because you disagree).

Once affiliate reps start getting negative reps for too much spam it should be fun to watch.

It's meant to be another tool in deciding if someone is credible or not, not a be all end all if you can trust them, so it's far from useless. It's not that hard to look through someone's iTrader and see the people that left them positives and their comments and reputations. If a bunch of anonymous posters with 1 or no iTrader are leaving him the positives then that is a red flag. It sucks that you got scammed, but people get scammed every day by otherwise reputable people that are just starting to fall apart, and you never know if you are dealing with someone with a solid rep that is just starting his downward slide...
