Everyone loves to rant about how easy mainstream is but it's 100x harder to get the traffic. Guarantee it's a lot easier to get 20,000/day to a porn site than it is an auto insurance, web hosting, or any other sort of offer people are pushing in mainstream.

You can't go by what people say anyway. That's always been a bad move. People aren't going to tell you what is working for them because that often means more competition. When they do tell you it's usually bullshit because they have a financial interest in you participating. That's part of Marketing 101.

Moving adult to mainstream, expect it to be just like starting all over again. It'll take you at least a couple months to settle into the way things work over there. Don't give up yet. Keep some stuff going on the side...

I've been trying some mainstream things for a couple of years now and
I just have to say that my worst adult site still made more then
all my mainstream enterprises combined.

Maybe I suck at mainstream. Maybe it's just harder. I don't know.
I can say that I have put in some hard long efforts for basically nothing in return.

I only quoted a section, but everything this guy said is the truth - I spent ~18 months developing a site 5 years ago -very hard work on and off. People laughed that knew me but all agreed the idea was solid. It just took a lot of time to get off the ground. I took the hard way - all myself no investors nothing. Very very niche based because I saw the hole and what I developed filled the void. Now there are many copycat sites in my niche, but mine is the largest. 0% overhead as it's all 100% robot-driven, (takes some hours each month to keep the robot in check) and so all is 100% profit. One day, it will get bought out I'm sure due to the type of site it is (not its niche) and it will then fail, I'm sure, but I don't give a damn, because it's been a free and easy ride - just don't go for the obvious niches ;)

I think adult and mainstream are classifications that are too broad. You would really have to narrow your focus to make money. Think about profitable niches that you could make money in. Adult - forums, toys, pics, videos, dating, web cams, etc.

Mainstream is quite profitable if you know what you are doing and you chose the right verticals. You can't take the same business model you have in Adult and say "I'll just port it over" and expect the same results. It does not work that way.
Adapt & Change ...Now rinse and repeat!
