Ogrish.com domain revoked by registrar for content
German registrar bans Web site
By Declan McCullagh Staff Writer, CNET News.com February 11, 2003, 5:54 PM PT update A domain name registrar in Germany has deleted the registration for a gruesome U.S.-based online photo gallery that featured stomach-wrenching images from autopsies and medical procedures. Computer Service Langenbach, which operates the Joker.com registrar in Dusseldorf, Germany, yanked the Ogrish.com domain name from its database this week in response to a request from a German prosecutor, said the hosting service and the owner of the site Tuesday. "I've never heard of a case where a registrar can disable a domain over content," said Ted Hickman, who runs Virginia-based ProHosters.com. "I certainly won't be registering any domains at Joker.com...We'll host anything that's legal in the U.S. It's not our job to determine whether content is acceptable to others." Neither Computer Service Langenbach nor the German embassy in Washington responded to inquiries. A search on the domain Ogrish.com in the Whois database lists it as "disabled by government." http://news.com.com/2100-1023-984248.html?tag=fd_top |

This is not a good sign. |
Good, now they need to get rid of kiddy porn and goth sites and the internet will be a much better place
|
I guess this is the internet equivalent of book burning.
The Germans did it before in the 1930's so in a sense it's hardly surprising. |
Wonderful not only is Germany a country full of international pussies now they encourage censorship as well.
What's next? Bring back the nazi flag? Fuckin' sorry bunch of folks. |
That's fucked up. First they try to fuck up our war plans and now this?
Its time to open a can of whoop ass :winkwink: |

I support Ogrish and have for a long time. Given that Mick Mercer, whom I'm fairly certain has written more books on Gothic culture than anyone else, called me the 'King of Goth', I feel fairly qualified to speak on behalf of the whole class. Many many of us dig Ogrish.com, or at the very least, hate to see things banned for objectionable yet not illegal content. Forrest Black- (all true, but not to be taken terribly seriously, really.) |

I still can't believe they did that. |
Pardon me if I don't always care. I don't like censorship, even of things I don't like. On the other hand, I refuse to get up in arms every time something happens to someone in some country. The world is full of injustice. Usually, I react to it. Sometimes, I have to take a day off from caring about the little stuff.

gothweb is american, you dick. unless i misunderstand that comment. |
Isn't Germany also the country that deems it illegal to display any adult material if it is not behind some sort of AVS?
I've heard of people getting letters from some organization over there, asking them to take down their site or to put it behind avs, or else if they enter Germany they will be arrested. |
gee, that's a shame.
|
Let me elaborate a little. Censorship sucks. However, what do people expect when their domain is controlled by a country with censorship laws? Their first-ammendment argument is totally invalid, since they were dealing with a non-US provider. The first amendment does not protect Americans from the laws of other countries if they are in, or do business with, those countries.

What was the bandwith bill with ogrish.com? Do you think that Ted is crying right now?! :glugglug
|
why the fuck would you use a german registrar anyway???
|
Be afraid be very fucking afraid
Censorship is on your front door It is already knocking Be afraid be very fucking afraid You might be next if the morality in your state, county, country, city or town does NOT like what you put on the Internet Ogrish needs to win It needs to be back online Freedom of Speech?? What happend,, ? |
If you use a German registrar you agree that the contract is governed by German law and in this case Joker.com complied with the judgement... why would they fight?
The German law is fucked up when it comes to the Internet... in many cases the reason for strange decisions is that the judges don't have a clue and many judgements are appealed successfully. One Example: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/524951.stm |
Thats typical..... Joker had such bad documentation and overall procedures, it was just a matter of time before they did something arbitrary and unconventional.
|
And you fuckers complain about censorship in the States...
