I don't understand the big deal about "nigga". As long as you use it correctly you shouldn't have too much of a problem. I am white as can be and don't dress wigger but I say nigga all the time around black people and they don't really care. If it's not a word you use a lot then you are probably going to make an ass of yourself trying to use it but if you've been saying it nonchalant for years then what's the problem.. only some tough guy is gonna cause shit over it.

I say that to my blacks as well, but they work for me and I pay them to clean my house and cut my grass. My butler has been with us for over 45 years and one of the nicest black people I have ever met.

I drove on the 91 Freeway through Compton during the 1992 riots, and there were lots of buildings burning there. In the 20+ years I've lived in LA, I've never been there.

I'd never been to the Crenshaw district either until last October when I went to shoot photos of the Space Shuttle, Endeavour.

I'd wager that many here are wishing you'd go to Compton as well.

The road that runs parallel to mine is known as 'Murder Mile' but I have only seen one stabbing in close to 20 years living here on and off.

Its nice that you get a mix of some really weird people, it makes me feel a bit less weird...

Although you rarely hear somebody going batshit crazy for being called honkey, contrary to someone being called nigga. Some are civilized people after all.

The biggest rules I would have there would be pretty simple (I have most of these most of the time anyway). You can make it fine in any rough area if you just have basic realities handled up in your mind

1. Everyone may want to hurt you (everyone)
2. Don't talk to anyone or make more eye contact than you HAVE to
3. Don't go out for no reason
4. Don't assume you have to look for trouble to find it
5. Be suspicious of everyone, especially nice people
6. Don't let anyone get behind you or close to you
7. Carry at least two good hidden weapons
8. Someone will hurt you if you look like you have anything
9. Someone will hurt you to take anything you might have
10. A-lot of people want to hurt you if you're white
11. Some people with hard times just enjoy hurting people so just limit exposure
12. When you go outside stay moving (ideally in an automobile) and know where you're going and the area you're going through to get there
13. Don't go anywhere with anyone or let anyone get close to you or lead you in any way .... that means hey come around here I have a gold bar for sale for $8 ... shit like that
14. Let shit fucking slide .... no matter what it is ... unless it affects your wallet or stomach
15. Make sure as best as you can that no one tougher or more connceted than you is seeing or wants to see bitches you're seeing.
16. Never trust bitches ever
17. Never make a bad deal or one you can't keep
18. Don't borrow money or anything else
19. Don't let anyone do you any favors (NOTHING) because they'll come back on you
20. This is all common sense and not following these is 90% of why people get hurt and killed in "the hood"

Last month I was sitting drinking and smoking (cigarettes) with some black guys who were just hanging out dealing and relaxing at night,, and we got along great. I did slip and say nigga ONE time- but I was in a hurry to get my message out.

This (white) guy who tried to invent a story and get me caught up with leos was walking up on everyone and I said to the guy next to me "that nigga shifty man don't fuck wit 'em" ..... but that was only to warn him not to do business with the guy before the guy saw us. Was it "cool"- yeah, it was fine. The warning was appreciated, even.. but did I feel comfortable that I had said nigga to a black dude? Hell no

I lived in Thamesmead. It is thought of as 'the hood' and stuff certainly happened there but it was nowhere near an American hood.

The thing that got me the first time i went to London was all the homeless people i have never seen any from up north.

It is amazing how few London accents you amongst the homeless in London.
