for gfy users from the U.S. - would you please tell me where do you go on holiday?
Hello all,
we are doing a hotel booking website, and i am trying to pinpoint the most popular holiday destinations, where americans go on holiday for. I would rather hear what real people say than look up some statistic, so that's why im asking. I would appreciate if you could share your travelling habits, such as how many times do you travel, to where etc. Thanks! |
We dont "go on holiday" ...we take vacations. I think it would be safe to say Las Vegas and Hawaii are the top US vacation destinations. And 2-3 vacations a year would be my guess for most Americans.
|
My guess is 90% or more Americans have never been to Las Vegas or Hawaii and never will in addition to the fact they couldn't afford 2-3 vacations a year much less 1 trip to either of those locations in their entire life. But yes those are tourist traps but mostly for foreigners.
My vacations consist of a cabin in the woods on the river far away from everyone else and I wouldn't want it on yours or anyone else's map and/or website. |
If money is an issue, the national parks are very popular here in the summer.
If money isn't an issue NewYork City and Washington DC. are good places to explore. |
People in the US don't go on holiday, it's a European concept, they are allowed to do a bit of 'Traveling' just the once

I have always liked Northern California, Big Sur, San Francisco and north along the Pacific coastline -- a lot depends on the time of year that's a good area except for the winter rainy season. The redwood and sequoia forests are an example of America's natural beauty and well worth the short inland trip. Further north, Oregon and Washington state are very nice too. |
Divide your site by family type.
Young families with kids, old people, or singles each go to an entirely different list of places. |
Orlando (Disney World), Miami Weather), Key West (weather) Las Vegas (gambling), Colorado (skiing), LA (Hollywood), Washington DC (monuments, White House, history, etc), Cape Cod (nostalgic summer), New Hampshire (skiing, foliage), Vermont (skiing, foliage), Boston (history), Philadelphia (history), Chicago (shopping), NYC (shopping), All of the National parks (Yosemite, grand canyon, etc)

Most of us Americans can't afford the luxury of a vacation.Time away from work is a rare occurrence.

You're doing it wrong, man. |
We don't take holidays, we take vacation. And I would venture most people travel to see their family half the time. This year we'll be making five trips to Southern California to see family.
You have to remember the United States is huge - The United States is the size of Europe. For me my vacation of choice is Hawaii. Quote:

Don't forget about The Jersey Shore! - Seaside, Wildwood, Cape May and Point Pleasant beaches and hotels.
The hottest chicks from New York, Philly and of course Jersey hang out here! On a side note; This is a business thread so hopefully some of these jerkoffs don't go posting pics of fucking Snookie and the rest of the JS clowns* |

When I vacation, I usually leave the country for places like Jamaica or other destinations with all inclusive resorts. Once in a while I will go to Europe but it's not my first choice because it seems like an old version of the US with higher prices. |
So many replies and nobody mentioned Caribbean countries? Or Cancun and similar? Only domestics mentioned.

Some interesting European thoughts on the American vacation in this thread. Most of them wrong. |
As has been said, the term "going on holiday" would get some blank stares in the USA. For us "holidays" are a day or two off for Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or the usual Xmas/Easter/etc. These are usually spent with family & friends, or a short weekend getaway camping or at the coast/beach or similar.
For "vacations", which are the longer leisure travels - Hawaii, Cancun & Playa Del Carmen, Vegas, Florida Keys, Bahamas, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Cabo, NYC, national parks like the Grand Canyon/Yosemite/Big Sur/etc, are probably the big ones. There are many many smaller destinations on the continent that are fantastic too, but the above are probably the most popular. And contrary to the belief of some on here, there are plenty of average middle class Americans who do get around 4 weeks of paid time off every year. |

we have a simple ESL misunderstanding here - for most of us "holiday" is simply what americans call vacation.
it took me a while to understand that holidays are something different than i thought |

OP is making holiday (ok vacation) website and wants to highlight popular destinations. Op is not going to highlight "local beach" or "cabin in the woods" or "at home" that suits average families better. Its a vacation website he is creating... |
Outer banks of North Carolina (Cape Hatteras)
Myrtle Beach South Carolina. Google map these places, I don't think you would be disappointed in the outer banks Like most people have mentioned, this country is huge and it all depends on what you are looking to do while on vacation. Good luck.....have fun :thumbsup |

Again I was explaining why nobody has mentioned either yet. They are not that common. Why would someone mention something that is not common? Here. Let's vacation in Tahiti. Thread starter, create a massive section about a vacation package to Tahiti because it's pretty and exotic and lots of fun. Happy now? If I was creating a website targeted to Americans about American vacations that Americans actually take, I would probably feature vacation destinations that Americans actually go on. Apparently that's insane! |
