Rochard 02-19-2014 04:16 PM

Maybe if they paid less attention to what a single dumb band is doing and more time worrying about everything else, they would be in a much better place.

Reminds of the shit our government used to in the 1970s.

I'm amazed they got so much of that video and managed to keep it. First rule of being totalitarian dickheads is: Don't allow anyone to film you being totalitarian dickheads. Their behavior is shameful, but the fact that they also 'did it wrong' is perhaps even worse. Fucking idiots.

P.S. - In human history, no empire has ever survived when attacked by teenage girls on a mission. Pussy Riot has done more for their cause with a handful of people and no money in a couple years than 'Occupy' and all the other groups have done with 10x the people in 10x the resources.

mineistaken 02-19-2014 05:28 PM

What kind of "police" was that?
Uniforms does not say "po po", also funny colored hats and also not matching uniforms, one of them with some soldier colored pans or something.

pimpmaster9000 02-19-2014 06:00 PM

so im guessing this is during the olympic games in sochi and that they actually do not have a permit to perform and are obviously circumventing security and being in a hurry to break the law?...

im sure if it was the olympics in the good ole civilized USA they would have just been tazered? LOL

ok now everybody can go back to out-of-contexting this video and pretend that it was completely unprovoked and should try the same during the next olympics in the USA a good ole ambush anti government concert...tell me if your tongues taste like battery after the tazering LOL

LOL, hyperbole much? Pussy Riot got notoriety because they live in a retarded country that sent them to prison for staging a protest in a church. What else have they done? Name anything, besides forcing media members to say "pussy riot" repeatedly (which I condone). Obviously nothing to derail Putin's domestic or foreign policy, which is chugging along as usual.

First, saying they have done more than Occupy isn't hyperbole.. Occupy did nothing. Second, they have garnered more mainstream media attention than any grassroots effort you can name... With zero resources. The fact that you opened this thread to tell me they are ineffectual proves how effective they have become at drawing attention. With attention comes resources, with resources comes influence, with influence comes power, with power comes change. If you don't start with power, influence or resources you'd best become damn at getting attention. These girls have definitely done that.

So who are the Cossack thugs that violently beat non-violent protestors?

http://static1.nydailynews.com/polop...-riot-0219.jpg

Quote:

The uniformed men seen whipping and punching members of the Russian punk group Pussy Riot outside of a restaurant in Olympic host city Sochi on Wednesday were a part of a conservative militia Russian authorities tasked with security patrols.

The uniform-clad men were members of a Cossack militia.

The Cossacks, descendant from medieval settlers and farmers who traditionally inhabited southern Russia?s Caucuses region and parts Ukraine, are known for their strong beliefs in Russian Orthodoxy, traditional values, and ?disciplined way of life.?

Cossack militias are deeply rooted in Russian law enforcement and are said to have a ?distinctly militarized culture.?

According to Russia?s state-run Ria Novosti news agency, the Cossacks were employed to ?ruthlessly quell popular rebellion in Tsarist times and were repressed under the Soviets.?

But, nowadays, they carry out a mix of ?self-appointed vigilante police duties? and ?semi-official? tasks, such as security patrols at the Olympic Games.

Ria Novosti reported more than 400 Cossacks have been taking part in security operations in Sochi since early January.

In December, Russian President Vladimir Putin said ?Cossack patrols are part of the Russian identity.?

Putin, speaking in a question and answer interview, also said the Cossacks are at time more efficient than police.

In 2012, city officials in Moscow had Cossack militias patrol Moscow streets. The patrols did not have the authority to enforce laws.

That same year, Russia?s defence ministry signed an agreement with a Cossack security group to help guard military facilities.

The Cossacks were at the centre of a controversy that year, when the governor of Krasnodar Krai ? the Russian federal region where Sochi is located ? planned to use Cossack militias to patrol immigrant groups.

Human rights groups chided Governor Aleksandr Tkachev after he announced plans for a 1,000-member Cossack security force to uphold ?public order? amid tensions between migrants from the North Caucuses region and local populations, Russia Today reported at the time.

Cossacks have also been known to be a part of crowds that have turned in opposition to gay rights protests as well as having reportedly been behind threats against Muslim groups.

Yes yes, they hit the zeitgeist for the "Putin is Bad" West media (which for the record I happen to agree with) and they'll continue to get some coverage until the flavor of the month dies down. If they stay visible and actually build something beyond their initial notoriety - working with actual opposition groups or NGOs, etc - then we'll see.

Occupy was problematic and in some ways kinda silly, but in many of the locales where it was best-organized it did put thousands of people in touch with activist & community groups that still continue after the craze died down. In some places it really helped solidify activist infrastructure and communications. To measure a movement like that with "success" or "did nothing" is pretty facile.

Pussy Riot, Occupy, whatever, I'm supportive of any group or individual that speaks out against oppression & injustice. All I said was let's not get carried away with this Pussy Riot thing.

bronco67 02-19-2014 07:07 PM

In a regime like Putin's, you don't initiate change with guitars -- you do it with guns. They're pretty fucking stupid to keep up with their antics in a country like Russia.

Relentless 02-19-2014 07:27 PM

A handful of chicks with guitars can be much more powerful than a handful of men with guns.

Right, go against Russia forces with guns, that sure would be more successful :)

Of course. This publicity hurts more than few people with guns who would mean literally nothing against army/police forces.

No excuse for beating people, certainly not a small group of girls whom posed no violent threat whatsoever.

There are much less brutal ways of coping with civil disobedience. Civil disobedience should be dealt with civilly. :2 cents:

I have to say these girls (and guy) give me hope for the human race. They are relentless. :) I honestly thought they would disappear after they were jailed way back when yet they continue. I'm thoroughly proud of them and their cause and wish them all the best.

While this is such an important cause, I literally lolled over this :::::::::

Where do you see police there? these are civilian clowns in kazak-styled "uniform". To be clear, these guys are not authorities and they have the same rights as those who they beat. So that's why they decided to beat women. Just because they are cowards that afraid to fight against men.

Maqua 02-20-2014 12:45 AM

Pretty sad video, notice the cops at the beginning slip in to spray and try to hide what they were doing, well the girls are in for another rough stay!!

Another clueless... THEY ARE NOT COPS. THEY ARE CIVILIANS. Crazy, fucked up, apparelled civilians. They have no rights to use power against other citizens and they can be sued for that.

Cossacks, who are neither members of the police or the military, have been employed by Russia to maintain order and help patrol the streets in the Krasnodar province, where Sochi is located.
Who employed them?..

These are volunteers attracted by city administration. Once again, they can only patrol and look around. If they see something that looks like a crime, they have to report it to the police. They can not use force against other people because they have no authority. If they did that, they can be sued, and I hope they will be.
