Why does the white need 23 helicopters costing 17 billion?

Yeah, I understand why the president needs a high end helicopter and other things, but at this price, (400 million each) do they really need 23 of them?

http://news.yahoo.com/obamas-20-bill...-politics.html

I meant to say white house

SilentKnight 05-09-2014 04:01 PM

First rule of spending - if you don't use up that $17 billion somehow...it's tough to ask for it again next year in the budget.

Its not his money so he could care less.

Lets see how long before the usual suspects say its not his fault.

Didn't realize they fly so many decoy choppers...could probably cut costs on the decoys quite a bit. :2 cents:

The Military-Industrial complex is quite a racket, and quite lucrative to those who know how to work it. :disgust

Obama's take charge/give a shit reply to hearing about the cost of the new fleet:

?The helicopter I have seems perfectly adequate to me," Obama said. "Of course, I've never had a helicopter before. Maybe I've been deprived and I didn't know it.?

that guy stopped caring a long time ago.

According to this Threats against the president have increased 400% since Obama took office and his protection detail is stretched thin because he gets more than 30 death threats per day.

Others say that isn't true. I guess only the Secret Service knows.

If it is true, maybe they felt the need for the increased security.

Would be far from the first military contract weighted down with bloat in order to make all the stakeholders money and political capital - this is common practice and a common result in the military-industrial complex. There are immense cost overruns for underperforming and often unnecessary vehicles and weapons systems all the time and under every administration, including some that make this look like pocket change. And some prior versions of this helicopter project were indeed spearheaded by a Republican administration, those too also faced spiraling costs and were ultimately cancelled with nothing whatsoever to show for it.

The only reason Vend brings this up is.... well... guess.

.

Just found this from 2009 that refutes that:

"U.S. Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan dismissed published reports that the level of death threats against President Obama are four times greater than typical threat levels against recent presidents ? claiming the current volume of threats is comparable to that under George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

"It's not [a] 400 percent [increase]," Sullivan said during a heated exchange with Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), who suggested the service needed additional agents to protect the first African-American president.

"I'm not sure where that number comes from," he said, adding that the number of threats against Obama "are the same level as it has been [against] the last two presidents.""

I think it's because Pres. Obama campaigned in 2008 about changing all of this kind of thing.

It wasn't supposed to be "business as usual", and I know that every politician says that...but Pres. Obama was a very effective orator. I believed him in 2008 and voted for him.

Found out he's no different than the rest of these career/lifetime politicians.

Or maybe Vendzilla just hates black people? :error

beerptrol 05-09-2014 06:38 PM

Yes, yes! This is the first case in America's history that the government has over paid for military equipment.

Yep looks like the claim of higher threats came from a book a former secret service agent published, but the claims were never substantiated.

And refuted by the actual head of the secret service.

I remember when Clinton was President a guy jumping the fence and shooting at the White House.

And Bush? If anybody had a bullseye on them it had to be him. Al Queda wanted him dead BIG time. I bet that they will NEVER release actual statistics to the public about death threats to any President. But if we were to find out the real numbers, I'd bet Bush had the most of any recent President.

Hell, as hated as Bush is...I bet he STILL gets more death threats than Pres. Obama on a daily basis.

How many people are employed by the Secret Service?

The Secret Service employs approximately 3,200 special agents, 1,300 Uniformed Division officers, and more than 2,000 other technical, professional and administrative support personnel.

Facts mean nothing to Vendzilla and other republicans like him. He probably believes that Al-Qaeda is run by the Pentagon and other things his pal Alex Jones says. What? Don't believe me? Here ya go : http://www.infowars.com/al-qaeda-100-pentagon-run/

Anyway, here's what Vendzilla forgot to tell you.

- The helicopters uses now are over 10 years old. They were ordered replaced back in 2002 but the program was put on hold twice, one time by Obama himself back in 2008.

- The new Helicopters won't be completed and ready to fly until at least 2020, with the production completing in 2023, way past the time President Obama can make use of them (He's out in less than a year and half)

- The contract was awarded to Sikorsky Aircraft Corp, by the Naval Air Systems Command.

It say so right there in the article you posted entirely by yourself.

With that said, I would like to quote what you wrote.

Rochard 05-09-2014 09:10 PM

Of course Vendzilla is just drooling over this, but he didn't read anything.

The original contract was signed under President Bush in 2005, and was for $6 billion. The US government only paid $3 billion, and not a single aircraft was ever produced.

The new contract is for $1.24 billion and will most likely never be used by Obama. It's scheduled for 2016, but operational deployment most likely won't be until 2017 or 2018. That's fine, Hilary will get to enjoy it.

hah, so obama asked gates to cancel the initial project in 2008 due to the expense of the 13.5 billion $ project, so gates killed it with a $3.5 billion loss and no aircraft.

but obama shoulder shrugs the $17 billion project that replaces that and that's for fewer helicopters.

so instead of 28 choppers for $13.5b, we get 23 choppers for $20.5b,

and the American public is the dumbass here for pointing that out?
