Are you Proud of Yourself?

Most of us here on GFY are already in our 40s or 50s... Have you looked back recently, and seeing what you've done with your life, realized you are a success in your own eyes? Or do you see yourself as a failure?
Why? What, in your opinion, makes you proud of yourself or not?

CurrentlySober 04-08-2015 12:19 PM

Yes. I'm a success... I'm a fucking star! I was in exactly the right place at exactly the right time, worked hard and got out smiling!

I won

Thats not strictly 100% accurate - I also do it in shop doorways, underpasses and bus shelters as well... I'm not ALWAYS at home :2 cents:

CaptainHowdy 04-08-2015 01:25 PM

Being proud of oneself just by oneself is naive ...

MakeMeGrrrrowl 04-08-2015 01:40 PM

I'm very proud of myself, and I love myself very much.

I'm most proud that I love myself as much as I do when I once had a lot of self pity and hatred, it was super hard to re-wire my brain, and I am still doing that every day. I'm proud that my oldest graduated high school, and my middle one will next year when my highest grade completed was only 8th. I'm proud that I grew up and did exactly what I wanted to do when I was little....own a farm.

I could literally go on all day.

What about you czarina?

Are racial slurs actually against the rules? Serious question.

dyna mo 04-08-2015 02:01 PM

pride is the original deadly sin and the one all others arise from.

i'm contented, not prideful.

Yes. Strictly enforced more so these days. Check out the GFY Rules link for best results.

Me? I am proud of myself. I switched careers in my '30's (music journalism) to doing this of all things. I started out with literally $0. I had to borrow the $750 to open a CCBill account. And oh yeah - my girlfriend walked out on me, leaving me the whole rent to pay ($1100). I gave myself one year to make my rent or face moving back home to sleep on mom's couch. In the 9th month, after 13 websites launched, my 14th one "hit" and I never looked back.

Now I have 84 paysites with more to come, three affiliate programs, employees and more headaches. LOL But also more freedom. I had a shit ton of help (much of it right here on GFY) so I am grateful as well as proud.

The secret: have a goal, adjust when needed, and never (ever) stop.

Rochard 04-08-2015 02:08 PM

I am very proud of myself.

I dropped out of high school when I was 15, left home, became a US Marine, a college grad, got married, one kid, made lots of money, and became a general manager of freaking Playboy. I have a really nice home here in Northern California. I am happy, healthy, and no complaints.

CDSmith 04-08-2015 02:08 PM

There's a few items I'd say I'm proud of, sure. A few accomplishment. And I pride myself on how I tend to take pride in my work, as in when I'm doing something I try to do it well. There are also a few things I'm not so proud of.

But do I have the kind of pride that says I've "arrived", that I think I've done everything, have grown as a person, have learned enough, and can now sit back and bask in my proudness and enjoy my glory(hole)? No, that kind of pride is delusional. Everyone has some improving they can do. Everyone. Some of us more than others, but every one of us.

ManPuppy 04-08-2015 02:58 PM

I'm proud of being honest, open-minded, adventurous in my way, willing to help others (which often means just listening and paying attention to them), and for being humble enough to ask for help when I need it.

Accomplishments are measured in many ways. I am proud of myself. Pride without vanity is not a "sin;" it's just an acknowledgement of self-worth.

pride in and of itself is very much a sin, it is THE sin in fact and a concept that predates christianity. the greeks had another term for it, i forget, i'll look it up.

anyway, this is my view with it for me, not my view or criticism on anyone else's view of their own life.

dyna mo 04-08-2015 03:11 PM

this is a nice summary:

In almost every list, pride or hubris (Greek), is considered the original and most serious of the seven deadly sins, and the source of the others. It is identified as believing that one is essentially better than others, failing to acknowledge the accomplishments of others, and excessive admiration of the personal self.

Dante's definition of pride was "love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbour".

In Jacob Bidermann's medieval miracle play, Cenodoxus, pride is the deadliest of all the sins and leads directly to the damnation of the titulary famed Parisian doctor.

In perhaps the best-known example, the story of Lucifer, pride (his desire to compete with God) was what caused his fall from Heaven, and his resultant transformation into Satan.

Pride

my point being with the success you've said you've had, you seem to be squandering it.

my life is pretty typical, nothing to really be proud of i suppose. business wise, financially i have failed to achieve many goals thus far. i will keep trying.

L-Pink 04-08-2015 03:17 PM

I'm always happy, so yea, I'm proud I have realistic goals, proud I can adapt to anything and small things like the beach or a dog are important.

SilentKnight 04-08-2015 03:37 PM

I don't really stop and take the time to think about it...but I guess overall yeah, I have pride in my life's accomplishments.

In the early 80s I was headed down a not-so-good road - but by the end of the decade turned things around, went back to college...and forged on from there. Got married, raised two daughters, built a successful business from scratch, bought a house, nice vehicles, all the toys I wanted...and still continue to put the food on the table.

I don't think of taking a little pride in terms of being better than anyone - just content that I chose the better path a few decades ago.

I do like how porn crashed for most people making it so younger people were less enthusiastic about becoming webmasters so now most of the internet porn people are bitter old men

Being one of only 4 people in his entire gang who can figure out how to start a computer is something to be proud of, yes.

If I were jel I would be proud of my cynical yet perceptive observations and overall life wisdom. But that's just me (and thank you).

dyna mo 04-08-2015 08:19 PM

Can't say I'm proud, been around the block a few times when it comes to women and although I've earned every damn cent with hard work and perseverance working for the man for over 30 years,I'm somewhat happy that I'm relatively healthy.

Spunky Spunky. There are things in life you've done to be proud. One you should be proud you worked steady for 30 damn years.

So you banged a lot of girls. Be proud? =) Most guys are.

Maybe people just don't generally think about it, but they really fucking should. I am my own biggest cheerleader I think.

I agree. I do feel good about myself whenever I fall into one of those guilty comparing myself to the people i grew up with pleasures. But when Im alone, i feel I partied too much. Played too many video games. Sat around and did nothing when I could have worked on my retirement. At this point, I dont think I can afford to retire :(
