We live in the era of instant global communication. Technology has already globalized the world - whether any government wills it or not. There are two responses to this: cooperate with other nations for the benefit of everyone, or be left on the sidelines as the rest of the world advances together.

When trump needlessly instigates trade wars, pulls out of international deals, and antagonizes America's allies, he's not putting America first. On a planet with limited - and dwindling - natural resources, the fate of nations is inextricably linked. Denying globalism is denying reality.

I assume what you're referring to here is China's unfair trade practices - forced tech transfer and IP theft. I totally agree that China is a bad actor in the international economy. But the correct response to this is not to throw down tariffs (the cost of which is passed on to the American consumer), it's to work together WITH the international community to denounce China's unfair practices.

Like it or not, its a reality that the U.S. doesn't have the economic clout to bully China. China is expanding their trade network across all Asia and Africa - soon they will have plenty of markets to sell to outside of the U.S. But if a multilateral coalition of nations put up a unified front in the face of unfair Chinese trade (and plenty are willing) then it might actually put enough economic pressure on Beijing to change its strategy.

That particular example yes.. But that's just one.. MANY counties enjoy duty free selling here in the US yet tax our exports to them.. Our cost of living is higher so the only way for our companies to make a profit is to also export the labor as well. How much of that can one country take? Trump wants EQUAL/FAIR trade.. That's it.. It's a FAIR ask.. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.... The REAL problem is these countries have become so accustom to having those tax/tariff dollars they don't know how to replace them.. It's not that they don't think it's fair.. They (the governments) just don't want to give up the money/revenue... So the only way to force them to do so is to hit them right back with the same. All of these US based multi-national corporations obviously don't like it because they've exported all of their labor and importing all their goods....

The reason why U.S. companies export labor overseas isn't unequal tariffs. Even if tariffs didn't exist at all it would be monumentally cheaper to export labor anyways, because wealthy nations like the U.S. have more skilled laborers that fuel a SERVICE economy rather than a GOODS economy.

Even if Trumps protectionists policies worked and we got manufacturing jobs back in the U.S., why the hell would we WANT those jobs? Do we want America's youth to be working in sweatshop factories making consumer products? No - we probably would prefer they have high-paying service industry jobs.

Right now the U.S. economy is about 80% service and 20% physical goods. For other countries its inverted - they get 80% of their GDP from physical products that they sell to us and others. The U.S. wants those things real bad, because like i mentioned before, Americans would prefer to not work in sweatshops even on U.S. soil. Luckily the U.S. has become rich from its service economy, and it has the money to import physical goods. This supply and demand creates leverage, and for the most part richer countries are happy to pay import tariffs so they don't have to build shitty plastic toys every day. If every country had exactly the same economy, then Trump policies would probably be correct - but they don't at all.

Obama was correct - those jobs are never coming back, and they shouldn't. What kid growing up in America wants to be a steel worker or coal miner? What parent wants that for their child over the economic security and physical safety of other occupations?

And yes, sometimes service jobs (like customer service) get outsourced. While this is a more menial job in the U.S., its a more specialized job in India, as it requires foreign language skills. The correct response is not to compete with India for the technical support market, its to boost education so that Americans have better options at home while still competing in the global economy.

The market is responding positively because of things other than trade - the GOP tax cut and the slashing of business regulations. This doesn't mean the tax cut is good, as economists have noted that corporations have taken the money and used it to buy their own stock - artificially inflating the value of their companies. I can't post a source (post count to low) but a quick google search of "stock buyback 2018" will get you a ton of legitimate sources.

This is a great article that highlights the scary truth of the U.S. economy - the market is propped up by stock buybacks, and the crazy growth of a handful of tech companies (Amazon, Apple, etc...). On the surface, the numbers look good, but its not real growth, and it doesn't reflect the financial well-being of the average American.

I see what you're saying, and I get frustrated when I see my fellow citizens repeating Trump's lies and miss-information. But I try to remember that we are on the same side - We want a better future for our country.

If I respond to Trump supporters by calling them idiots, it doesn't help anyone. I will convince nobody that way. So i try to respond with verifiable facts. This really frightens me also. I understand and respect that someone with an education like yours will be more knowledgeable - and It's great! People can learn and benefit from your knowledge. But you're right that they need to be willing to hear it.

This is especially scary with respect to climate change. There are so many in America who "don't believe" in climate change. But on what basis? They aren't scientists. The scientific facts don't require belief.

I'm not extremely experienced with Germany, but I did live in Berlin for a month, and I remember thinking that the Germans were very aware of the lessons of history and the importance of global cooperation.

It scares me to hear you say this, especially with your economics background, but I read articles every day warning that this crisis is coming - Brexit, the China Trade Wars, and the collapse of the economies of other nations (Turkey, Iran, South Africa, Argentina), are all factors I read about in these articles. Maybe you have more insight - it does seem like we're nearing a terrible time.
