So my son's girlfriends Dad comes to pick her up...

... and proceeds to poke about what I do for a living etc.

"Oh gee yeah you seem to do pretty good for yourself. Say, my wife wanted me to ask you if you can help her get one of those stay at home mom tinker on your computer jobs"

God that absolutely infuriates me sometimes. God knows I guess, if "I" can do something, than any dumpy housewife who has no job skills can do it too! Kind of insulting.

I just tell them to merely look up how to start a home based business on google and go from there like I basically did.

Then I get "Can you just show her exactly what you do? She learns fast"

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh Man, it's like FUCK NO now get the fuck outta my house and go get your wife a paper route. ( I didn't say that but my facial expression probably did)

I get that way too often. Then they are insulted that you don't have time to show them everything you know. So I'm a big asshole now I guess. He didn't seem too thrilled with me.

StickyGreen 10-20-2005 08:49 PM

I used to have friends ask me to design websites for them. I showed them my all text Alta Vista sites. They never asked again :)

Don't let it bug you too much. It happens to people with "normal" jobs too, not just stay at home jobs.

tell him no but, I think you'd be great for a new site of mine... :1orglaugh

I fucking hate that shit with a passion. I even hate reading about it on here, cause I know exactly what you're going through and what those idiots are thinking.

I recently had a friend of a friend, whom I told that I ran adult sites, pretty much ask me how he can get started. He said he wanted to "make more money". I told him McDonalds managers make $35k/yr and to get the fuck out of my face and grab an application.

Happens to me all the time. :( Family members, neighbors, friends and complete strangers (the lady at my bank for god's sake). Alot of people are just plain rude and pushy about it and unfortunately I'm developing a very low tolerance for it. lol

I tried to help both of my brothers a few years ago, and when they realized that there was actually alot of work involved they wanted no part of it. Seems they think it's alot easier to just ask to "borrow" money from me.. of course I've learned to tell then "NO" so I'm a bitch either way lol

ah well.. they'll get over it! :)

I would have suggested you bite the bullet and tell him what you do, but on second thought he would have never wanted to leave, and he would probably felt funny about his daughter seeing your son.

My neighbor comes over last week, after we had dinner with them. She doesn't do any work herself, she is recently moved here from England and can't work yet. Anyways, she comes over and asks if I can help her setup a non profit website. Im like, oh boy can't wait for that...

I just avoid those people, or even better start saying some very technical stuff. They lose interest very quick.

phonesex 10-20-2005 09:26 PM

My family and friends think I'm lazy sitting at home and doing nothing. Then they ask me how to get into the computer business. Yeah right! Did business takes skills and determination. It seems if were not out from 8-5 every weekday then something is wrong.

Whooooooooa wait a second. You look way to young to have a son old enough to be dating (unless your son is 10). There's no way you are over 30.

Nismo 10-20-2005 09:33 PM

I'm going to start telling these people that I jerk off on my webcam for ifriends in the gay section, then ask them if they want to join in with me. They should lose intrest after that.

Exactly. :thumbsup

I tell everyone who comes at me with the line of BS "hey show me how to do what you do" that I offer a 4-day tutorial for a flat fee of $500. That's four 3-hour visits, they learn the basics of planning and building a website, developing it into a business, familiarization with FTP, finding a host, some basic paint shop/photoshop skills, and tips on how to start promoting their new online picasso.

To date not ONE person has coughed up the cash, and frankly I'm not a bit surprised. Once they find out that they will actually have to do some work for the gold cup they crawl back under their respective rocks every time.

For the record, to learn what most of us took years to learn via an adult learning center would cost them in the range of $5k to $20k, because there IS no one single magical course out there... it would take at least half a dozen courses to learn how to do what we do, and those courses ain't cheap.

$500 is a bargain.

It is also a good way to gauge just how stupid and lazy people are. :D

I get a lot of the same. for a long time my friends thought that I didn't "have" to work or that I didn't have a "real job" and they wanted me to watch their kids and run errands and shit for them while they were at work and after about a month of this I just told them no. At first they were pissed and stunned and then I explained that I would work my normal 8 hour job and come home and do websites for another 6-8 hours every night for months on end to get things going for myself. I also explained that I put in more hours in a week then they do and if I take 2 hours out of my day running their errands that 2 hours more I have to work that night.

after that they laid off. One friend tried to get into it and stopped after about 3 weeks because he didn't want to work at night, he would rather play games.

jact 10-20-2005 09:36 PM

We have a neighbor who has been nagging us to show them how to make money on the internet for a year and a half. It's probably the most annoying thing I've ever had to endure (Since I really hate her). "We have a computer, we can do it too right?". Right, sure, yup, you can do it too. Don't ask us to show you the way. She thinks I shoot television commercials and documentaries. HEH.

I went as far to buy a computer for my friend, gave him all the links to the resource centers, and told him to learn.

After a few weeks of him trying to ingest it all, he just disappeared. Didn't even try once he found out it was work. :(

This was back in 2000. After that, I just said fuck it to helping noobs and people in general out about this industry.

BlackCrayon 10-20-2005 09:51 PM

people are ignorant of what we do. some people think im a bum who doesn't work, some think im a porn star or make tons of cash. i come from a very small town and my mom is a highschool teacher in the next town over and every year there is always one student who asks if her son (me) is a porn star or runs porn sites. i feel bad that it still happens 7 years after i started doing it and i don't even live there anymore.

i tried showing a couple friends how to do it, my thinking was i could really use someone to partner with if they can get the hang of it but in the end they were clueless without my help and never thought it would be so much work.

sometimes its fun to throw a whole bunch of shit at them and watch their eyes glaze over. i don't even have to get technical. all i do is start mentioning all the languages you need to be familuar with, cgi, php, html, etc.

selena 10-20-2005 09:59 PM

I had a similiar experience very recently. It really burned me.

Some friends were home from out of state for a family thing. One of them took me aside and said something very close to "You know, I need you to teach my husband what you do. He doesn't want to work anymore."

I was dumbfounded.

RRRED 10-20-2005 10:04 PM

Haha Peaches.. I did throw in a bunch of search engine jibber jabber after I told him how simple it really is to start by learning to make your own web page from google. That's always proven to help I remember that technique from when I first started. And he did start to get either annoyed or disinterested. I couldn't tell cuz I really don't know the guy.

However, I had to quickly guess and judge if he knew what I did for a living. I don't think he knows but you never know. I acted like I did a little of this and that... threw in some cell phone babble from when I made money from that. Anything I could grasp that didn't include the words big sausage pizza or Playboy.

I actually flat out told my boy yesterday. We have never talked about it but he knows the entire internet is all kinda related and that I know of and have been around adult industry people. He knows they're no different than me trying to keep a roof over his head. He was like "Oh cool ok". Plus he sees my gfy tank in the laundry room or whatever. Can't totally lie.

But yes her parents are already like 15 yrs older than me easily so I was sure to do all our bonding and such by phone in the beginning so they don't think I'm a freak. They would definately think I'm a freak if they really knew.

Downtime 10-20-2005 10:09 PM

we feel your pain, i'm sure we've all got a few experiences like that.

my favorite is just because people know I run a website, that they think i'm an expert computer expert, from spyware removal to hardware problems. wtf?

OMG that just reminded me :1orglaugh I went ALL FUCKING OUT one time for Todd's mothers new husband who trained drug dogs. Walked him through the whole thing from an editor, showed him how to link, to configure his email, set up ftp, hosting, a nice domain, and worked in a bunch of search engine work mostly sitting right there about to put my head through the desk just watching him click around changing font colors for over an hour.

The site actually went up and was good... I actually talked to him about how to use his #1 competitor on the east coast as his ally, not his competition. They would trade dog training jobs so the travel was cheaper etc.

I was always kinda resentful cuz they were very unappreciative and still undermined what I did. The ole mother in law was one of "those" if you know what I mean. Just a real bitch and hated my guts.

So the funny part.. He got a dog training job somewhere cuz of his website, connections, etc etc, went to the job and never came back! :1orglaugh I guess I did my good deed afterall.

Man, this thread is the story of my life LOL

I spend half the time trying to convince friends/family that we are not bums or losers. And the other half trying to make them leave me ALONE!

They think I can just make them free websites. Yeah, coz I wouldn't be doing anything anyway LOL
