There is a fresh bombing strike going on - but that's not exactly new either. The current targets are allegedly roads and bridges in South Lebanon.

Tanker 07-12-2006 09:35 PM

Israeli jets fire 3 rockets into runway at Beirut international airport, Reuters reports, quoting security sources. Details soon.

ed146 07-12-2006 09:54 PM

Conflict resolution; Let them kill each other so we wont have to worry!!

Tanker 07-12-2006 09:55 PM

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Officials have closed Beirut International Airport after Israeli warplanes struck runways in the Lebanese capital's Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs, The Associated Press reported.

How far do you think this is going to go?

Try this with another question Tanker....

Why would anyone want to bomb commercial airport runways of a country which has no fighter aircraft?

Martin 07-12-2006 10:00 PM

Fuck with the bull, you get the horns.

kmanrox 07-12-2006 10:01 PM

"the goverment of lebanon did not know about the attack plans on israel and thus we are not responsible "

I think it's time to make them "know" .

That really is a dismal assessment and has nothing whatever to do with reality...

Hezbollah, although part of the Lebanese government, is not the ruling party and is actually in opposition to the increasingly weak main party. Even if the kidnapping was not a rogue action, there is no way that Hezbollah would have told anyone else, let alone sought permission.

One can only guess at the point of Israel bombing Beirut airport and addressing itself to the Lebanon government as a whole. It is remotely possible Israel believes someone can influence Hezbollah, but it is also hard to avoid the suspicion that a wider agenda is being played out.

With Syria out of Lebanon last year, it was only a matter of time before Hezbollah became the dominant force in the country. Backed by Iran and a committed enemy of Israel, that isn't something Israel (or the US) would want to see. At the same time, occupying Lebanon would be too big a mouthful to chew off, so perhaps this is a strategy intended to destabilize the country once again.

I guess they know now, huh?

If the guy next door to me had a big dog and the dog bit me every month for a decade, yeah, I'd be knocking on his door too.

If Hezbollah is the dominat force in the country, and the govenment of Lebanon is unable to stop them, then Israel has to step in and take action.

And I think Israel can occupy all of Lebanon; They've done it before.

In very simple terms Israel has returned the land they've taken in past conflicts, and the promises these attacks would stop haven't happened. Israel kicked their asses back in the 60's - took on a handful of countries at once - and had them on their knees begging to stop. They prolonged the fighting to grab as much land as possible.

Note that my wife has family in Lebanon. They emailed this morning to let everyone know their house was flattened by a bomb / missile attack, but the house was empty at the time.

Great - another "surgical strike" ... sorry to hear that Rochard.

Damian_Maxcash 07-13-2006 01:01 AM

I just woke up and saw this all on CNN - I think I will just go back to bed.

Im getting pretty close to booking a flight back to NZ, there only has to be one more major 'development' and I dont want to be in London.

I'm glad your wife's family wasn't hurt.

To be clear, I'm not arguing for or against Israel's actions: I don't see how anyone can usefully do that without knowing their intentions. But whatever point of view someone adopts, surely it has to have some basis in reality?

For example, Israel has never occupied the whole of Lebanon. In March 1978 Israeli forces crossed the Litani river and stopped within less than 10 miles. They withdrew in June. In 1982 Israel pushed the PLO back to Beirut and then settled to occupation of a 12-mile "security zone" where they stayed until withdrawing in 2000.

You also talk about Israel having returned land in return for unfulfilled promises about an end to conflict, whereas in fact the only time this has happened was when the US brokered peace with Egypt. And that has held successfully on both sides.

If you want to set a country back 20 years a good way to do it is disrupt their transportation system.

Exactly what they have been doing so far mardigras :thumbsup

Basically bombing roads, bridges and now the airport.

Ironic that the reason given by a spokesman was to stop troop movements :1orglaugh Can see the 4th Battalion of the Palestinian Armored Division heading up the street and 52 F16 fighters taking off from the airport to attack Israel :)

diesel 07-13-2006 04:30 AM

These Israel surrounding countries are full of terror groups. If Lebanon can't clean it, let proffesionals make the job.

Israel will get their ass handed into them if they actually tried to occupy the whole of Lebannon. Hezbollah is huge there and is 1000X better organised than Hamas. They are of course incapable of taking the Israeli army on head to head, but imagine Iraq insurgency X1000 if Israel tried to occupy the whole place. Israel didn't leave because they felt like being nice last time, Hezbollah started handing it to them, and this time they are much much better organised and with total support just about. Israel knows this and I highly highly doubt they'll attempt to occupy the country. They'll knock out some of Hezbollah's and Lebanese material assets (such as their TV network, etc) with planes, etc and have skirmishes in the South and that is about it. And honestly I can't believe your wife is Lebanese. I presume Christian Lebanese, but still, you are such a pathetic Zionist puppet it isn't even funny.

Rui 07-13-2006 06:21 AM

I hope I get to visit Beirut someday
