Who Here is Successfully Self Employed?

More curious than anything... I am 37 years old and have not worked for "the man" since last year. I do all of my sites full time, 50 plus hours per week. And make my money exclusively through my concepts. All of which, is under an s-corp.

What percentage of people here do the same?

If I had to guess, I would say 1/4 of us are successfully self employed without need for outside help, ie. second job, fulltime job, etc.

J. Falcon 02-08-2010 06:26 PM

Thankfully I am.

SBJ 02-08-2010 06:29 PM

quit my job of 12 years in 2002 and haven't punched a clock or worked outside of porn since then :thumbsup

XPays 02-08-2010 06:29 PM

Barefootsies 02-08-2010 06:34 PM

Been in the industry since 1997 (celebrity, affiliate, pay sites). Started immediately after college while still working in telco. I have been doing this full time since starting the production company in around 2003 I would guess.

:pimp

Since 99 early 2000 give or take

NaughtyRob 02-08-2010 06:39 PM

Been self employed since January of 2002.

pornlaw 02-08-2010 06:39 PM

Self employed since 2001 but define successfully ? Sometimes I wish I just collected a paycheck -- lots less stress....

Robbie 02-08-2010 06:41 PM

Been self-employed all my life. I'm 48 years old and always owned my own businesses. Never had a job working for someone else. Never will. :)

digitaldivas 02-08-2010 06:42 PM

Wow, cool, some of you have been doing your own thing far longer than me. You can probably relate to my mindset then. The more money I make, the more I want to work, I get paranoid that I am missing out on money if I am doing other things. Everyday is quite exciting for me right now... Yeah, I left my "real job" in August and haven't looked back. I know that my income will "peak" at some point, but fuck, what a fun ride this is, so far!!

Do you get your passion as a defender of the first amendment, the industry or both?

I played music professionally from 1978 forward. Also had my own male strip show in the mid 90's and did pro wrestling on the indy circuit up until 2002. The male stripping and pro wrestling were just for fun and extra cash. I started adult in the mid 90's and then just played in my band on the weekend and stopped traveling with it. I thought I was big time making $500 + a week in cash as a musician...until I jumped in online adult and learned what real money and having credit is. heh-heh

Yes, I did Fetish Parties before Adult. I had booked pornstars to headline my shows, seemed like the natural thing for me to do, after I got shut down. What do you play? Pro wrestling, that must have been a pretty cool experience. Do you still keep in touch with that crowd?

I'll give you the short story.

After college I started a celebrity feet site for myself. I did not go to college for html, and this other stuff, so it was just a hobby. I have self taught myself everything over the years through trial and error.

Getting back to the site.... It was fairly popular, and when the web changed in late 90's, I had to move to a dedicated host. The site became popular, and I was paying hosting bill of $800-1000.00 a month for others enjoyment. So I changed it to a membership site, people paid, and I was off.

While working in telco, was making a nice sum of money off that and some other adult pay sites I ran (all closed, or sold off now). For those I licensed content and feeds from others. I would constantly be frustrated by the 'ownership' or lack there of when it came to the adult pay sites. So I planned on starting my own where I would 'own' everything.

I started with a clip store, and the rest is history.

CunningStunt 02-08-2010 06:54 PM

2003 I quit my day job to go full time. Haven't even considered ever going back to it. Plus with my warped outlook, I'm unemployable now anyway :1orglaugh

And yes, I very much keep in touch with the pro wrestling world. Here is my pro wrestling forum: http://tptrash.com/regal/

Thats awesome. Seeing the Biz through an affiliates eyes before launching your own program has most likely given you much more insight into the various aspects of the industry.

Yes, I think the key is reinvest, reinvest, reinvest. And be smart with your money.

fatfoo 02-08-2010 07:13 PM

I have a sole proprietorship and I also do some employment, as well.

I had a locked in GIC at about 4.75% for a year, also.

At 21 I started an auto service/tire store company that I later sold to Sears.

I was 40% owner of a search engine/pay per click cash cow that was one of "goto's" top traffic suppliers. Those were the fucking days.

I presently own commercial warehouses, am a fetish/erotic photographer and live in a clothing optional resort in Florida.

Thanks for the Inspiration guys. :thumbsup

I hope to be soon, just filed papers for an LLC. Currently still working a 9-5 and would love to do something I enjoy. I do like the safety of knowing I have a pay check coming every week, health insurance, and vacation time...but being my own boss would be awsome. Luckily my wife has a good job so it helps a lot. I am also taking civil service exams...these jobs have the best benefits. I won't quit my day job until I feel confident I can make it...

We are now looking to buy some real estate and start a family but everything is just crazy expensive in the NYC/Westchester/LI areas where we want to live and the taxes are just insane. There is not much of a recession or house devaluation here.

So to live the lifestyle we imagine I need to become more successful with my online projects in the near future.

Deej 02-08-2010 08:04 PM

penis wrinkle...

andrew-acs 02-08-2010 08:07 PM

I think me.

xenigo 02-08-2010 08:12 PM

I lost my job at Oracle Corporation back in 2002. Being on your own is refreshing, but also stressful at the same time. I've forgotten what it's like to have co-workers. I like my independence... but I do miss having co-workers... on the other hand, I know I wanted to murder them sometimes.

CPimp 02-08-2010 08:17 PM

I lost my job in the end of 2008/beginning of 2009 and havent looked back.

Semi-Retired-Dave 02-08-2010 08:19 PM

Haven't had a boss since I was 15, and that was a LONG time ago.
