Antimatter - the real threat to humanity.

Now it has become a reality.

The reaction of 1 kg of antimatter with 1 kg of matter would produce 1.8×1017 J (180 petajoules) of energy, or the rough equivalent of 43 megatons of TNT. For comparison, Tsar Bomb, the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated, reacted an estimated yield of 50 megatons, which required the use of tens of kilograms[citation needed] of fissile material (Uranium/Plutonium) (hundreds for the full-yield 100 megaton design), and two tons of lithium deuteride (fusion fuel).

Cyber Fucker 12-01-2010 04:17 PM

The real threat to humanity is humanity itself with its self-destructive nature.

Davy 12-01-2010 04:21 PM

Pfff... How can antimatter be a problem? We'd all probably just disappear very quickly.
I find radioactive fallout far more terrifying.

Iran is salivating

Brujah 12-01-2010 04:28 PM

180 petajoules, nice! How much energy does it take to create 1kg of antimatter?

i worry more about anti intelligence :thumbsup

moeloubani 12-01-2010 04:31 PM

It has always been a reality in the sense that you are talking about it, theoretically. But 1kg of antimatter is a long time away, they haven't been able to keep any amount of it trapped until just recently when they trapped 38 atoms of it.

Antimatter + Large Hadron Collider is a real step toward self-destruction.

it's better to burn out than fade away. :2 cents:

if it's over some day i want it to be quick and painless ;)

You've defined it as a threat to humanity, but you've failed to explain where 1Kg of antimatter would come from or how it could be produced.

Why not just announce that a 1200 foot long squid is the greatest threat to humanity? Or 6000 50 foot tall hamsters?

fatfoo 12-01-2010 05:56 PM

Also try to avoid dangers like black holes that suck everything in and nothing ever comes out.

i would be definitely afraid of 6000 50 feet tall hamsters :helpme

2MuchMark 12-01-2010 08:00 PM

Not only are you afraid of nothing, but your math is way off.

CheeseFrog 12-01-2010 08:32 PM

Nice link, Zelda.

you don't know that nothing ever comes out.

That's only the stuff people actually know about.

Look at you, tryin to sound all intelligent and stuff.

CaptainHowdy 12-02-2010 08:08 AM

I'm cool with that...

Hentaikid 12-02-2010 08:20 AM

They only made like 30 atoms of the stuff. It's gonna take a while to build a milligram, never mind a kilo.

Worry about the nukes, they'll vaporize you just as nicely.

SmokeyTheBear 12-02-2010 10:47 AM

matter means its important and anti-matter means its not important , so don't worry about it. ;)

HomerSimpson 12-02-2010 11:40 AM

If we could create it in small amounts and use it in secure environment, we could solve worlds' energy problems so we shouldn't rely on fossil fuels or nuclear power. I think it's well worth the risk.

PornMD 12-02-2010 11:43 AM

Antimatter doesn't matter.

Meloman 12-02-2010 12:05 PM

I've also read that another issue is that it takes more energy to make it than it produces.

Fletch XXX 12-02-2010 12:48 PM

the number one threat to the internet will always be fletch xxx. :2 cents:
