I feel like I'm taking crazy pills- Opinions?

Quick Question:

If someone buys a prepaid ad spot for a 30 day period is it kosher to serve a lander for an unrelated site as a pop under whenever that sponsor's creative is clicked?

Just curious as I was told this was not an unusual or unfair practice. :upsidedow

your traffic, you can have your terms

personally i don't respect any kind of popups

People will screw you if you let them and they'll often try to convince you that you're the one being unreasonable. It's a common tactic. :2 cents:

Not kosher, no pop-ups.

Personally, I have no pop-ups on any site I own, never have, never will. They piss surfers off enormously, well, they piss me off at any rate.

Treat your surfers how you'd like to be treated. Do you like going to sites and having pop-ups and pop unders and all that other BS popping up in your face?

The situation is one where an ad was purchased for 30 days, no pop under was ever discussed prior to purchase. After ad was live pop under was discovered.

My feelings about this are #1- it's using our ad tools to promote other businesses, something we don't let affilates or CPA avertisers do, much less an ad position we are paying for, and #2- by paying for the ad space we should reap the benefit of all revenue generated by clicks to that ad space.

I'm not trying to start shit or call anybody out. I just wanted some feedback since I was told this was a typical practice, and in my experience that's double dipping. Essentially the pop under is creating an additional stream of revenue from an advertisement space that's already been purchased at a flat rate. :2 cents:

Not really a need to. Things are still salvagable so I hope things will be made right. If things work out they work out, if they dont' then I walk away. No need to fling mud.

Didn't make this post to threaten to out a company or twist somebody's arm, I just needed the sounding board. I felt like I was taking crazy pills when the conversation came to the point that this was being passed off as a standard industry practice.

In a few months I'll have been doing this shit for over 10 years, glad to see I haven't lost touch with how things *should* work. :thumbsup

Most definitely. Even better when the site starts playing some shitty music, then makes me click on about 6 dialog boxes when I try to leave. Some large, blinking text always makes it more special for me too.

Such a user-friendly experience.

i check the link for pops/consols/traps etc before i accept the money...

fuzebox 12-14-2010 01:42 AM

A lot of tube/plug type sites have first-click popunders that they sell in bulk like another ad spot... It's ugly but it's the kind of thing you have to look for when doing media duys.

sandman! 12-14-2010 01:42 AM

did you say no popups on the landing page ?

if you specified no popups then its not cool if you did not then 1 popup or popunder is assumed.

In this situation I paid the $$. I bought the space and it's my ad that's being clicked, the pop under is not mine.

did i just see what you did there? ;)

in any case that does suck, no pops on traffic you're paying for.

Kosher is only a section in a grocery store.

Is this a subtle "hate" post??
