This sounds pretty scary.... so long as you don't put much thought into examining the details reported.
The article's headline says that the missiles could "reach the U.S." Considering the average quality of the journalistic brain, however, that claim is probably worth scrutinizing more closely. ;-) The article lists three missile types, the one with the longest effective range being the Iranian Shahab 3, with a range of 1300 - 1500 kilometers. Miami is the nearest major American city to Venezuela, and it lays about 2100 kilometers from Caracas. It may be possible to target some portion of Florida from some portion of Venezuela using these missiles, but my hunch is that the countries that have something to worry about with respect to these missiles are Venezuela's immediate neighbors, and not the U.S. In other words, as trumped up fears go, this one is pretty freakin weak. :2 cents: |

i agree with you that this is probably just another ploy to prepare the US for our ultimate war with Iran and overthrow of the Venezuelan govt.. but, did you read about the scientist that was invited to North Korea? NK has nukes now and is capable of producing about 3-5 warheads a year if i recall the article correctly.. this is far above what the world thought they were capable of and if the actually had a advanced delivery vehicle, we would be bombing them right now.. my point is that things are never as they seem and unless you are deep in the intelligence community, you will never know the truth.... :2 cents: . |
every country in the world should be loaded with nukes so who cares.
as one is not going to rob a granny packing a pistol every country having nukes would lead to world peace. |

Chances are Iran, NK, et al. have capabilities to nuke us, and Iraq and terrorists in Afghanistan didn't...which is why we freely went to war in both of those places and why we play cutesy with Iran and NK. We're probably being more covert in our efforts to quash them vs. all-out war. Either way, no one on this forum and probably no one related or friends with anyone on this forum really knows wtf is going on, so it's just a deterrent to doing something constructive. |

Breaking News:
United States Republicans and Democrats Unite In Laughter Over Iranian Missile Threat Various levels of the U.S. government are publically speaking harshly of news of Iran's plans to place medium-range missiles in Venezuela. In theory, these arms would pose an immediate threat to U.S. shores, its offshore interests, and its southern allies. The reality, though, is somewhat different. Long divided by an unstable economy - and long running wars in Afghanistan and Iraq - both the Senate and the House of Representatives could barely contain their laughter in the face of this new threat. As the guffaws began to subside, Senator Bill Nelson (D - Florida) - wiping back tears - shouted, "What if those Iranian missiles have the capability of reaching the Gulf of Mexico? We've already had one tragedy there this year... " He then fell off his chair, overtaken by uncontrollable peals of laughter. In response to Senator Nelson's statement, both the United States Senate and the House of Representatives - on a thirty second time delay - broke out in tears and started peeing their pants. The President's office could not be reached for comment. In other news: Brazil, Colombia, and Panama are really pissed off that their asshat neighbour is piling more shit on their plates, while Grenada and Puerto Rico just sighed quietly to themselves and shook their heads. Meanwhile, Haiti is in a state of panic. A quote from Haitian Presidant Sean Penn, err, René Préval - secure in the knowledge that if anything goes wrong, it will go wrong in his country - just came across this desk. "Fuck this shit, man. I'm outa here." |
I smell bullshit.
This will be the final excuse to go to war with Iran. The American people will big for it before the media will scare them shitless. Golf Of Tonkin all over again. |
seems to me that if this was fabricated by the u.s. that venezuela and/or iran would point that out.
and an update: fear has been used for DECADES to justify the military industrial complex. bomb shelters were being sold in the early 1950s along with bomb drills teaching children how to scramble under their desks in case of attack by the russkies. |
It will never happen...

A partial translation of which is here: (German Version): http://www.welt.de/politik/ausland/a...Venezuela.html "Iran plans to build a missile base in Venezuela Iran plans to place medium-range missiles on Venezuelan soil and to deepen the strategic cooperation with the regime of Hugo Chávez. "Welt Online" learned from Western security sources that an agreement between the two countries was signed during the last visit of the Venezuelan president to Tehran on October 19. The previously undisclosed contract provides for the establishment of a jointly operated military base in Venezuela and the joint development of ground-to-ground missiles. The agreement follows a recommendation of the Supreme Security Council of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and religious leader Ali Khamenei a few months ago. According to information of this newspaper, the Security Council had proposed a joint military facility on Venezuelan soil to increase the deterrent power of Iran against the West. The cooperation would be a way for Iran to establish a strategic base in the South American continent - in the United States' backyard. "Welt Online" learned that Venezuela has agreed to allow Iran to establish a military base, which would be manned by Iranian missile officers, soldiers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Venezuelan missile officers. The base is mainly as a storage location for a strategic Iranian weapons reserve. In addition, Iran has given permission for the missiles to be used in case of an emergency. In return, it says in the agreement that Venezuela can use the basis for "national needs". This would increase the threat to neighbors like Colombia. Iran also pledged to help Venezuela in rocket technology expertise, such as intensive training of officers. Also planned is the joint development of a ground-to-surface missile, based on the extensive experience of the Iranians. The agreement also provides for Iranian Shahab 3 (range 1300-1500 km), Scud-B missile (285-330 kilometers) and Scud-C missiles (300, 500 and 700 km) on the new base to relocate, and four mobile launchers." |
