damn that guy was amazing.
a friend of mine in lancaster, ca knew him when he was living there and one day he saw him at the local grocery store in the baked goods section. van vliet was looking at a pack of dolly madison cupcakes (or similar) with a graphic of a boy on the package and he said "how sad this boy has a cupcake for a heart." he also used to make appearances at a local hotel called the desert inn, one night while my brother was playing a set with his group he came in and started jamming with them, blowing something completely different in another key. That was Beefheart. |
He was quite the character.RIP Captain

Homegrown Video mourns Beefheart's passing
Damn. That is a fucking shame. I have been looking to pick up some of his paintings but good luck getting one now.
Love the stuff he did with Zappa and his solo work is, was, and will always be ahead of its time. Interesting footnote... when he still had his health he liked to jump on his trampoline while listening to live Dead for exercise. I kept praying he would come out and do a tour with Dweezil, but alas, it was not meant to be. A genius through and through. |
Get up on Beefheart
Safe as Milk is amazing - early Ry Cooder on the guitars (on the album) |
Electricity
In my mind, one of the best pieces of true psychedelia before it was appropriated by... the MAN. |
That is so sad, I have loved his music since Safe as milk when i was 17, 42 years ago...
