Christ wasn't born on the 25th of December. It was a Catholic appropriation of the birth date of a pagan god. Who knows which time of the year Jesus was born but it wasn't Dec 25. Considering how cold it gets in Israel at this time of the year, I highly doubt a manger birth and swaddling clothes would effectively guard against the chill.

I became indifferent to christmas (the gfy spellcheck thingy says I should capitalize the "c" in christmas, fuck that too) when I stopped believing in god, santa clause, the easter bunny and all other irrational things.:error

Since then when people ask me what I'm doing for christmas and I tell them "nothing" most of them get this "oh you poor guy" attitude, and when I try to explain that it's my choice to not participate a lot of them seem to think that I'm just covering up a sad and empty life and make it their mission that I have a "good christmas".

They just don't get it, and I've had to be an asshole about it a few times in the past just to get these people to stop trying to convert me into a "normal christmas person" like themselves, it's like they think I'm sick and they have to cure me. And then some get all hurt because I won't put my beliefs aside to accept theirs. :1orglaugh


I've lost count of how many times I've been called a Grinch in my lifetime, I end up explaining that I'm not a Grinch, the Grinch wanted to steal christmas, I've come to the point where I just want it to fucking die.

Not everyone is "a christmas person" and the more you try to turn somebody into one the more they will resent it.:mad:

I used to not be a Xmas or holiday person too.


Now i have a 3 year old daughter and a 4 month old son. Those 2 make the holidays fun again. I am a totally different person with holidays now because of my children. But i definitely do understand the "fuck Xmas' mentality.

Most of the people who know me well understand and (eventually) respect my wishes, but there are two other groups of people I end up having to deal with every year.

The Casual Giver
These are co-workers, friends of friends etc. that maybe haven't gotten the message yet that I've opted-out of christmas, these are often people who's feelings I don't want to hurt so I do like Amp says:

It makes me feel like a total hypocrite to take their gifts but it keeps the peace, I always vow to either convince those people that I'm serious before next christmas or avoid them altogether in the future so I don't end up resenting them for making me feel like a hypocrite.

The other group I have dubbed "The Xmas Nazis"
These are the people who live for this time of year, their electric bill doubles for the month of December because of all the lights, these are the people who buy the red and green christmas sweaters and wear them proudly.

These are the people who get an unholy glint in their eye when I tell them "no thanks, I don't do christmas."
They seem to take that as a personal affront and decide to punish me for my heresy.
With a malicious glee they try to rub everything christmas in my face, as if to say "Don't like Christmas huh? well you will when I get through with you!"

These are the people I sometimes have to get rude with.

I didn't set out to hate christmas I just don't want to play, but the more people try to make into a "christmas person" against my wishes the more I resent them and it.
