Have you seen Mexico's Giant Crystal Caves? (Fucking cool)

Been pretty tapped out as far as decent television lately, so I've been downloading tons of documentaries. Grabbed the National Geographic special on the giant crystal caves in Naica, Mexico. This shit is fucking cool! Definitely a must see!

The cave is 27 m (89 ft) in length and 9 m (30 ft) in width. The cave is extremely hot with air temperatures reaching up to 58 °C (136 °F)[2] with 90 to 100 percent humidity. The cave is relatively unexplored due to the extreme temperatures and high humidity.[3] Without proper protection people can only endure approximately ten minutes of exposure at a time.[4]

A group of scientists known as the Naica Project have been heavily involved in researching these caverns.[5]

I watched this last night. It reminds me of the Thing, only instead of being freezing cold it's hot as balls.

Lint 12-27-2010 07:06 PM

Wow, what a place... Now I need to find that documentary.

Ya crazy stuff. I downloaded it a while back and just got to it. Mindblowing, and the conditions the researchers have to endure within the cave. It took years just to develop the equipment so they could survive a half hour in the cave. Insane.

PornGreen 12-27-2010 07:23 PM

why is it so hot in those caves?

pornguy 12-27-2010 07:26 PM

I don't think it's quite open to the public. Doesn't sound like there's ever been more than a few dozen people in it ever, and other than the two miners who cracked their way into it they were probably all highly regarded researchers.

The mine lays right on top of fault line, there's a giant magma chamber below it that heats the groundwater.

alias 12-27-2010 07:40 PM

Very cool, will have to watch the documentary.

cooldude7 12-27-2010 08:15 PM

fuckin awesome place., fuckin looks like superman movie or sci-fi flick..nice find.

BIGTYMER 12-27-2010 08:32 PM

Saw the two shows on them. Its ashame that they will be gone soon. The mining company is turing off the water pumps that keeps the caves open.

Why? Because I downloaded a documentary from a channel I subscribe to? So if I recorded the show and watched it at a later date, according to you, that would be stealing. :error

I happened across that documentary a few months back while channel surfing one night. It sucked me in. Absolutely dangerously beautiful. Didn't know they did a second one though.

Tom_PM 12-28-2010 11:20 AM

I saw the Return documentary recently on TV. The cool suits they use are pretty amazing but sketchy! Seemed that half the people who successfully made it back out say they wont go back in. Hotter than hell in there.

Sweet Smile 12-28-2010 01:29 PM

wow, that's really amazing place, but looks dangerous inside, crystals seems too sharp.
