According to Hitwise data released today, Facebook.com was the top visited website in the US in 2010, taking up 8.93% of site visits between January and November 2010. Google.com came in second at 7.19%, Yahoo Mail is third with 3.52% and Yahoo.com is fourth at 3.30%. YouTube came in fifth at 2.65 %.

While Hitwise came to the same conclusion back in March, this is the first time Facebook has been named most visited site of the year (crowding out last year?s winner Google). Comscore also shows Facebook.com passing Google.com in visits in November but all Google sites as still having more. According to Hitwise, visits to Google properties combined cover 9.85% of all site visits, making Google a formidable opponent.

?Facebook? also ranked #1 for most searched term of the year directly in front of the hilarious ?Facebook login? at #2.

You can read the full results here.

been like that all year.

FlexxAeon 12-29-2010 05:27 PM

oh hello there, bing!

Agent 488 12-29-2010 05:28 PM

bing is a joke and zero threat. the future of search is youtube, twitter and facebook, not bing or even google.

dyna mo 12-29-2010 05:29 PM

there's still a few days left! gogoogle!!!!!!!

Agent 488 12-29-2010 05:29 PM

actually the notion of search is probably archaic and will be geocitied in the next five years.

I agree....also expect to see twitter in that list soon ! social media holds the key.

LeRoy 12-29-2010 05:34 PM

i'd believe you if shit like 'www.facebook.com' wasn't a top search term...

Agent 488 12-29-2010 05:40 PM

generally i know if a site of mine is ranking in bing that is a sign i fucked up rather than success. there seems to be an inverse relationship between google and bing results.

people use search bar instead of the browser bar now myself included. google auto corrects while browser bar doesn't.

D Ghost 12-29-2010 05:46 PM

Agent488 is right. A large number of people type domains into search engines instead of the browser address bar.

i'm aware of that but, if anything, it only proves that search engines are still where people go to search. toolbar or not

D Ghost 12-29-2010 05:58 PM

I agree with flexx though, I don't think search is going away anytime...

seeandsee 12-29-2010 06:37 PM

We agree on something. At least search as we know it now. Better is the idea of a custom agent which does such things for you working directly with the available databases and sources. The idea of mostly static search results is far past it's time.

While we're at it Facebook isn't exactly untouchable either. There's no need for a centralized site.

marketsmart 12-29-2010 08:15 PM

thats why 75% of my traffic comes from google...

facebook will be dead in 5 years... :2 cents:

.

tom3k 12-30-2010 03:46 AM

yea these stats are misleading...

how about more like:

www.google.com + www.google.nl + www.google.hk etc etc etc... vs facebook.com...

id guess google still holds #1 regardless of what hitwise says.
