I've used softlayer in the past and they were good. Support was very fast. Never more than 5 seconds after calling before talking to a real person.

just shared, they mainly rely on email and web, i built a custom solution for him for his clients to upload files via the web so it sends to their dropbox account which syncs across their desktops and mobile phones.

his current host doesnt support https for curl, and has been wanting to move hosting for a while now.

If you are just looking for shared hosting, try hostgator

critical 01-02-2011 04:06 AM

I'd point them to Critical.net
Mainstream is not grey area for us, lol

MrGusMuller 01-02-2011 04:33 AM

I used to have (dv) - vps - and (gs) - shared - plans at
http://www.mediatemple.net.

Take a look!
They are very well known in the design community!
Only changed 'cause i needed good pings from Portugal.
Now I have 50ms and not 150ms.

Klen 01-02-2011 04:45 AM

There is no such thing as "mainstream web host"since all adult orientated hosts accept mainstream sites too.

There is no such thing as "orientated" either. :1orglaugh

http://www.softlayer.com for dedicated
http://www.vps.net for virtual private

Fris, look into Amazon's AWS for him. I've moved all of my mainstream stuff to AWS and love it.

I moved a client who runs a medium-sized food company over to AWS after their old host kept having issues. Now they're geographically load-balanced, redundant and the pictures in their catalog are served via a true CDN. It costs about what they were paying their old host too.

They have a big traffic surge around the holidays (people ordering fruitcakes, gingerbread houses, etc). The last two years they had downtime, slowdowns, db issues and other assorted horseshit. This year everything stayed up and was smoking fast. The owner thinks I am a God now.

Your friend can probably get by on a micro instance for little or no money at all if his load/traffic is small enough. Paying you for your time will likely be his only cost.

I use Liquid Web for mainstream. I have 1 adult site on the server as well. Been using them for years for vps and servers, fully managed and 0 downtime since I been with them as they monitor it and I monitor it myself every minute. They also host one of the largest web hosting forums as well.

does he use amazon for everything or just the s3 for the files?

shake 01-02-2011 10:39 AM

I'd use linode or slicehost for mainstream stuff. You get full control over the virtual OS, really sweet setup.

greg80 01-02-2011 10:41 AM

I use webair for all my sites, they are great. I make just about no money in adult anymore, all mainstream

Everything. Apache and mysql are on EC2. Catalog images are in S3 but served through cloudfront - they used to be served via a single dedicated box. We've even got DNS on Amazon's "Route 53."

What the shit are you babbling about, Borat? I was trying to tell you that the word "orientated" isn't a word.

In that case, I have friends that use hostgator and love it. Hostgator has really good reviews on the hosting review sites.

Personally I have a small shared with Amerinoc and I haven't had any problems there at all.
