"N word" removed from latest edition of Huckleberry Finn:

Quote:

One publisher of Mark Twain's classic "Huckleberry Finn," New South Books, said this week it plans to remove the word ?nigga? from new editions of the Mark Twain classic, replacing it with ?slave.?

New South also plans to replace the word ?Injun,? a derogatory term for Native Americans.

The effort is to combat U.S. schools and English departments that have been removing the book from their libraries and curriculums because of the word. ?Nigga? appears 219 times in the original ?Huck Finn.?
That's great. Lets get rid of all the lowbrow humor from Shakespeare while we are at it. It might offend women and fags.

Barefootsies 01-06-2011 02:59 PM

Great idea. I'd hate to hurt someone's wittle feelings.

I'm shocked that the texas school board hadn't already made them remove it. They seemed to have whitewashed everything else

LeRoy 01-06-2011 03:01 PM

I watch a bit about this on the news.

One sociologist made a good point.

How can society heal correctly if there are edits from the original version?

We can't. Or, as another person put it, those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

u-Bob 01-06-2011 03:08 PM

What's next? Burning the old copies?

pornguy 01-06-2011 03:08 PM

Not to worry. Within 50 years we will be told to forget the word exists and that it was ever negative. then Obama's daughter ( President ) will outlaw the use and make it punishable by death.

That's unfair!!!!!!

They are going to remove the "N word" but not "Cracka", "honky", "Spic" or "wetback"??

OH wait.......

The author already removed the other words before the book went to press.

Never mind.

justinsain 01-06-2011 03:16 PM

It's being done for those kids that don't have a chance to read the book because it's been banned from their school or library because of that word. They will now have a chance to read it.

Don't blame them for making an edited copy. Blame the people that ban the original.

moeloubani 01-06-2011 03:19 PM

Shit if I was a company and changing some words meant selling some more books then hell ya I'd do it. Blame capitalism, that's all.

I'd also sell the one with the words left out, shit I'd make it even worse if it meant more sales. Business is business!

It's plain wrong to edit Samuel Clemens, he was my favorite author. reading some of his quotes are the best

There's nobody for me to attack in this matter even with soft and gentle ridicule--and I shouldn't ever think of using a grown up weapon in this kind of a nursery. Above all, I couldn't venture to attack the clergymen whom you mention, for I have their habits and live in the same glass house which they are occupying. I am always reading immoral books on the sly, and then selfishly trying to prevent other people from having the same wicked good time.
- Letter to Denver Post dated Aug. 14, 1902; also published in NY Tribune Aug. 22, 1902 (regarding banning of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the Denver Library.)

I think it is bull honky and that Twain will be turning in his grave!

I like this one:
I once sent a dozen of my friends a telegram saying 'flee at once - all is discovered.' They all left town immediately.

He made so many newspapers remarks that there is a lot of stuff he wrote, I love most all of it

It's about the same as the morons that want to add clothes or coverups to nude sculptures so you don't offend someone. I don't like the word anymore than anyone else but to go around editing books is really fucking stupid.

My thoughts exactly.

CYF 01-06-2011 06:16 PM

yeah, let's get rid of everything we don't agree with. Let's not teach school kids about slavery, either.

Seth Manson 01-06-2011 06:18 PM

Sorry but "Native American Joe" will never ever have the same meaning in the book and "Injun Joe"

CyberHustler 01-06-2011 06:23 PM

What's the big deal?

All you weird whities complaining for nothing... don't worry, slavery will still be in our schools history books and black people will still blame slavery solely on you for your ancestors actions with no credit to their fellow blackies who sold them to you.

A big fucked up black and white clusterfuck that I'm happy not to be a part of.

:thumbsup

Now they remove the "N word" and change it to "slave" then they will remove the "S word" and they will change it to "Forced laborer" then they will actually say that there was some payment blah blah blah and finally after 100 or 200 years they will say there never was any slavery in the USA.

Huck Finn was the first book to humanize black people. The smartest character in the book was black. This is stupid. Keep the N word in there. I read it in High School N word and all. Sure it was awkward...but it opened up a great discussion.

nico-t 01-07-2011 06:56 AM

somehow this:

remove the word “nigga” from new editions of the Mark Twain classic, replacing it with “slave.”

sounds alot more offending, comes over to me as 'well every nigge.r was a slave so just call it all slaves :1orglaugh

on a serious note, i dont find this surprising. The US is the western world leader in censorship - blocking boobs and beeping out cursing on tv, luckily here the gov hasnt done that... yet. But since we keep following the US like a lap dog i think it will be a matter of time.

by the way, is that what seriously happens also? Putting clothes / covering up statues of naked people? Completely crazy.

Ancient Greeks didn't consider a man to be nude unless the head of his penis was exposed (uncircumcised dick = non nude).

makes sense actually.

Sid70 01-07-2011 07:21 AM

Did you mean Huckleberry Finn or Blackberry Phone?

John-ACWM 01-07-2011 08:45 AM

Why don' rewrite the whole book....stupid.
