John Boehner Fucks Up Budget Cuts Question

So, House Speaker John Boehner can't think of one government program to cut.

The video is on the same page.

===================================

In his first interview since being sworn-in as House Speaker, John Boehner struggled to identify budget cuts that could be made to reduce government spending. The one-on-one with NBC News' Brian Williams aired on Thursday night.

Asked to name a specific program that could be trimmed from the fiscal plan, Boehner responded, "I don't think I have one off the top of my head." However, the newly-minted speaker added, "There is no part of this government that should be sacred."

"I believe there's room, to find savings in the Department of Defense," explained the Ohio Republican. "There are a lot of needs at the Department of Defense. And I think Secretary Gates has a reasonable plan to allow the service chiefs to go in there and root out wasteful spending -- so they can find the money that they're going to need to make sure that we have the weapons of the future."

The remarks from Boehner come in the aftermath of the 2010 midterm election season in which Republicans ran on bold promises of plans to reduce government spending. However, just one day after the GOP rose to power in the lower congressional chamber, the authenticity of those vows is already being called into question.

The AP reports on the widely-touted Republican promise to cut spending and the likelihood voters can expect to see it fulfilled:

MaDalton 01-07-2011 09:51 AM

how surprising

IllTestYourGirls 01-07-2011 10:13 AM

I dont like Boehner I think he is a warmongering douche. But he did give an example of one by saying all should be cut. Then went on to say defense. :2 cents:

BestXXXPorn 01-07-2011 10:18 AM

It's a fucking political answer, would you expect anything more?

If he were to start naming specifics the media would have a fucking hay day with his ass... instead the media stretches for a non story story... Besides he has nothing to do with making those decisions anyway... Lame ass story with no content.

Vendzilla 01-07-2011 10:20 AM

He cut spending by getting rid of the jet Pelosi has been flying around in and is using commercial flights.
The pentagon is already working on cutting 100 billion from it's budget, before the congress gets to it.

On Thursday, the new House is also expected to vote on a 5 percent cut in its own budget, for an estimated savings of $35 million over the rest of the fiscal year. GOP House leaders say they will continue to vote on bills to cut spending of some sort at least once a week for the foreseeable future.

The Demon 01-07-2011 10:21 AM

If you guys are calling Boehner stupid, I can't imagine what anyone thinks of Pelosi's intelligence.

You mean that lady that under her leadership increased the debt 5.34 trillion dollars and said the democrats are better for reducing the debt?

Amputate Your Head 01-07-2011 10:35 AM

as you should already know, there is no difference between the left & right. The lies are the same, just worded differently. Anyone that truly believes one side has something different to offer over the other is deluded. :2 cents:

Hey, did you catch the news yesterday where the CBO said repealing "obamacare" would add 250 billion to the federal deficit?

Yeah...but the right believes the CBO is entitled to their own opinion. All that mathiness just gets in the way.

Yes we know there are tons of liberty killing, freedom killing bills that could be passed that would save us money. You know how about we make all the welfare people work for free fixing roads that would save us tons! It is win win for everyone!

Tom_PM 01-07-2011 11:07 AM

I'm all for welfare to work programs. You know all those jobs where people claim "no american will do them"? Welfare people will do them if they want a check. Kinda easy one from my pov.

Phoenix 01-07-2011 11:08 AM

did he cry after?

PXN 01-07-2011 11:08 AM

They all think they can get the job done, but none of them want to make the hard choice. It all about politic.

Slavery FTW! The people on welfare already have the chance to apply for government jobs.

Tom_PM 01-07-2011 11:18 AM

I dont presume that everyone on welfare wants to be on welfare. I presume they want to get off of welfare as soon as possible. Thats my attitude, why wouldnt it be theirs. I guess I'll let you know once I'm on welfare if my feelings change on the subject.

I read this and then thought of this quote from a great Matt Taibi article I read the other day.

"Boehner declared proudly, failing to recognize that paying for trillion-dollar bailouts and $900 billion tax breaks by cutting $30 million at a time is a little like planning a hostile takeover of IBM with a stack of Rite Aid coupons"

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics...105?print=true

Between that and the earmarks ban we should have the deficit under control around the same time the universe collapses on itself but anyways hooray for the new Weeper of the House!

If you look, you can find someone that quotes anything you want to hear.

Democrats have had the house for 4 years, deficit went up 5.32 trillion or something like that and things need to change.

This is probably the dumbest advice someone can give. Are you an anarchist? Do you, a member of the porn industry, think you can run this country better? Lol

ReGGs 01-07-2011 01:45 PM

You act as if that 5 trillion was all due to democrats spending wildly when the truth is about half of it was caused by Bush's voodoo economic tax cuts which were supposed to increase tax revenues somehow but we see how well that worked out. So yeah you can blame the democratic congress for some but the real meat of the deficit comes from the changes in the tax code and increased defense spending.

Now that the wars are actually accounted for in the budget(they weren't under bush) you will see the real cost of our imperial adventures. So until republicans figure out how we are gonna keep the same tax structure without running serious deficits then we are gonna be in this mess for a while.

kane 01-07-2011 02:19 PM

Let's not forget this is the same guy who is on video handing out checks from tobacco lobbyists on the house floor minutes before they are set to vote on whether or not to end the tobacco industry subsidies. Of course they voted to pass them and when confronted about handing out the tobacco checks Boehner admitted that it was probably an error in judgement and it won't happen again.

The guy is shamelessly on the take. Nothing will be different with he and the republicans in power.

What I am wondering is what would the reaction be like if that was Pelosi crying and Boehner sitting there straight faced with his new Donkey Kong mallet of a gavel?.

I'm not quite an anarchist.

I don't think anyone should be running the entire country, world, or states. the only government you should ever need is your local government.

I love how people can explain how it's not Pelosis or the democrats fault

Bush started a fire, the democrats poured gasoline on it, do you want to continue to pour gasoline on it?

isn't the tax breaks recently extended a form of 'pouring gasoline on it?'?

If it worked so well why did he then have to pass enormous tax increases to overcome the budget shortfalls. Shouldn't all of those tax cuts trickled down and created jobs and increased tax receipts to the point where no new taxes were needed?

He uh created more than 16 million jobs dude. Also, the defense spending exceeded the profits made by his economic policies. And finally, I said it worked well in the past, I didn't claim it worked miracles.

too bad he royally sucked at job creation, or he could've created more

Another myth is that Reagan was one of the best Presidents for job creation. In reality, he's among the worst:

Job Growth Per Year Under Most Recent Presidents8

Johnson 3.8%
Carter 3.1
Clinton 2.4
Kennedy 2.3
Nixon 2.3
Reagan 2.1
Bush 0.6
The following statistics shed light on this surprising finding:

So vend when they raisr what u have to pay for tricare you will be ok with that? Because i heard thats part of the plan. I love when people say barry is anticapitalist when the rich are having a banner yr. Also something to think about clinton raised taxes 22 mil jobs created.

How hilariously misleading your numbers are. The link was definitely humorous. The only president to create more jobs was Clinton but yea, Reagan really sucked ROFL.

So lets look at the job creation.

In Reagan's first term he created 5.3 million jobs. His second term saw 10.8 million. So he created about 16.1 million jobs. Not bad. But if you look at Jimmy Carter who I think most people will agree was a pretty poor president you will find that Carter created 10.3 million jobs during his one and only term. That means Reagan's best term with all of his policies running full steam ahead only created slightly more jobs than did Carter.

If you look at Reagan, Bush Sr. and Bush Jr and you combine all of the numbers you get 20 years worth of trickle down economics. Combined they created 19.8 million jobs. That is less than Clinton who created 22.7 million.

Sure, you can argue that defense spending exceeded the profits made by the tax cuts, but that is simply a justification for what ails this country across the board no matter who is in charge. They all spend money like crazy. The republicans tend to spend it on defense and use fear as a rationalization for their spending. The democrats tend to spend it on entitlement programs and use guilt to rationalize their spending.

What I am getting at is that there is no real evidence that trickle down economics works any better for job creation than any other system. It seems like any system, if it were combined with actually spending controls, would most likely work because I feel our economy tends to do its own thing regardless of the government's tax policies.
