My weight loss experience - SLOW and EASY

Having seen some other threads on weight loss I thought I'd post my own experience. The amount I've lost is not as remarkable as some others, but it's still ongoing, and most importantly it is relatively EASY to do. There's two simple rules I follow:

1. Think twice about what you're going to put in your mouth, and consider alternatives. Check the nutrition information on labels (eg fat and sugar content) to help put you off it... you might be surprised at what you find.

example: instead of buying a whopper for lunch on the way home, I think for a moment then decide to make a sandwich at home instead. I've talked myself out of the more convenient option, but feel good about it because I know it's going to be better for me.

2. If you must eat something that's "bad," have a smaller portion.

example: buy a single whopper instead of double whopper. (In this case, most of the fat and calories are in the patties, so a double whopper almost doubles the F&C!)

This is a very easy "diet" to follow because it's hardly changing anything. It's just about the occasional compromise rather than a crash diet or massive lifestyle change.

So far I've lost around 8kg/17.6lb over 6 months. Doesn't sound like much, but the important thing is that it's still TRENDING downwards (for the first time since I started putting on weight around 15 years ago). I've dropped one waist size (5cm/2") and even at my current size my pants are starting to feel a little baggy, so it's probably getting closer to 2 sizes (10cm/4").

Buying new clothes is a pain but knowing you have to do it because you're losing weight is an awesome boost for confidence. In fact I kept some of my smaller size clothes, that I haven't fitted into for a few years, and can now start wearing them again.

So remember. SLOW and EASY!

Hope this inspires some to give it a try. :thumbsup

Best of luck with your weight loss.

The problem, I think, these days is emotional eating.

I think the way of the world is causing us to be emotional basketcases and we just haven't caught up to realizing this.

i disagree, the problem is advertising. food companies spend $10 billion a year telling us to eat.

additionally the problem is fitness, the older we get lesser we move in general

Sounds great man, I lost 15 pounds just being healthy and active. Walking a lot actually.

I agree. Marketers will stop at NOTHING to get you to eat their product. Chocolate bars? Yeah don't worry, it's only a "slim" 100 calories! That Chicken Caesar salad at McDonalds, sure sounds healthy doesn't it? Sure, 580 calories later, with a Pop on the side, and your looking at almost 800 calories for a salad and regular drink! What about Yogurt with Pro-whatever-cultures in it, which is good for you! Did we mention most of the taste comes from sugar?

If your going to lose weight, stop eating out for one, or eat out very rarely... no more than once a week, and don't supersize it.

Look at the labels and try to squeeze in working out at least once a day or 4 times a week. Just a half hour each day is all you really need because you got to get your metabolism kick started. Another great way to motivate is to get on a machine at a gym that tells you how many calories your burning. Get on a bike, or a treadmill and check it out. Feels great getting off the machine knowing you've burned up some calories.

I think its both. For someone with over 75 lbs to lose its emotional. It wasnt the food that made the big change. it was changing the way I dealt with things emotionally. I said when I started if emotionally Im the same person I was when I started the weight is going to come back. Changing the way you deal with things emotionally is much harder than saying no to ice cream. Once I dealt with the emotions and also realized no matter how much weight I lose or how good I look I will never be normal and certain foods can never touch my lips they are poison to me. It's has been a piece of steak(I dont eat cake lol )

dyna mo 01-09-2011 08:19 PM

congrats to the op, i meant to say that earlier.

i hear what you are saying and do not disagree about comfort foods. but i do think we've been taught that. it's not in our evolutionary history to seek emotional comfort via foods. quite the opposite even. i think we learned that from advertising over time. wouldn't you say that when all is said and done, one doesn't actually benefit emotionally from eating comfort foods? eating that way actually makes things worse.

Only if your comfort food is Take Charge then its fine :) Yes I would agree, I would go on carb binge and I would feel numb like I was stoned. Then there was all the self hate as I looked in the mirror or couldnt fit in a bathroom stall. And its hard like my italian mother doesnt understand when I say the food doesnt matter, its the getting together that matters.

Oh yeah? Well fuck you!

Seriously, I agree also with your statement.

sbrazzer 01-10-2011 04:08 AM

Agree with the author. I lost 50lbs and it feels great. You have to limit the food quantity first. It is harder to start the diet. If you resist the first weeks, it goes by itself then.

cut the mayo, butter and soda

Just think if you go with -700 calories diet per day, you will lost 30kg in year :) so with JUST -350 calories per day in yr you will get off 15kg, plus if you put some training up it's 20kg easy in a year!

Sarah_Jayne 01-10-2011 05:16 AM

Congrats on your loss. I agree with taking time to lose it. In my experience it is more long lasting that way but every person is different.

CaptainHowdy 01-10-2011 06:14 AM

My dog is trying to lose weight, I'll forward him this thread...

djroof 01-10-2011 06:30 AM

congratssssss

You believe in it, that's what matters most.

1 kilo of body fat has 7000 calories - if you want to lose it you need to eat 7000 calories less than your body burns. working out is not necessary, it just either makes it quicker or lets you eat more

actually the best way to get rid of fat is to burn it off not starve it off. also, it's 1 pound = 7000 kcals.

http://www.weightlossforall.com/calories-per-pound.htm :winkwink:

and yeah, starving it off sucks cause it's not very motivating. eating differently on the other hand... but this will not work with fast food

Jman 01-10-2011 10:19 AM

Kudos to you, slow and steady is a sure way to keep it off.

I now eat much more slowly and cut portions in half.

Congratz on your loss! :thumbsup

czarina 01-10-2011 10:33 AM

that is great, congratulations!
Keep up the good work, it is a great feeling when you step on your scale and LOVE the numbers you see!

Worst advertisers lately are people like Manwich, Chef Boyardee and whichever huge conglomerate owns them all. Let me just tell you right now. A can of chef boyardee or manwich DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY SERVINGS OF VEGETABLES! Period. It's pure distortion.

The FDA can decide a "serving" is anything, and a "vegetable" is anything. They could literally decide that a pile of dust (dehydrated, nutrient and vitamin depleted) is a serving of vegetables, therefore if your can contains a pile of dust, it contains a serving of vegetables, and that makes the ad "not a lie" *wink wink*.

But it's really a lie. Please dont buy shit and decide it's steak, please. And congrats to the OP for walking and driving past the slop trough and choosing better foods for yourself. I also walk past an open McDonalds to and from the grocery store, and it always feels good. I havent had "fast food" in well over a decade now. Dont miss it whatsoever.

blonda80 01-10-2011 11:49 AM

slow didn`t worked for me. I liked it fast and I did it fast :)
Congrats
