1 year of sobriety and what I have learned.

1. I don't NEED booze or drugs. (or programs to get off them)

2. An occasional slip doesn't mean shit.

3. Sobriety is a double-edged sword on many counts.

4. Taking the high road is worthless when you can't use it for your own gain.

5. The whole fucking thing is overrated, although there is something to be said for not being shitfaced 24/7.

I intend to get good n' fucked on my actual 1 year date. (coming up soon, which I will not disclose.) From there we'll see how I feel about it and go from there.

work is A LOT more work being sober.

a few tequilas improve my work by factors of ten.

xenigo 01-09-2011 10:25 PM

I've spent quite a bit of time questioning whether I should continue drinking on a regular basis. My main concern is how alcohol affects the brain in the long-term. I really don't want to be jeopardizing my analytical skills... when you get older, I think you're already in an up-hill battle brain-wise...

Sometimes I like to look back at my previous emails and posts and try to judge whether I'm killing myself or not... it's hard to tell.

I know my memory is fucking shot.

what I don't know is whether it was the booze & drugs, or the experimental shit the military put me through.

quiet 01-09-2011 10:30 PM

i cut way down on the booze years ago. and in the past couple of months further reduced, just a little red wine with dinner now. hmm.

DWB 01-09-2011 10:34 PM

I'm a firm believer that anything in moderation is OK, so long as you can stop doing whatever it is at any time.

Anyway, I've spent 14 years of my adult life sober. 12 straight and then went out for 9 and back again now for 2 years. When I got sober the second time I reviewed the options of AA after spending years in that life before and literally 1000's of AA meetings under my belt.

Fuck those losers crying about life's simple shit all god damn day. I then read the 12 steps again and just fucking laughed because noway would I even do 1 of the 12.

This is what I do know. I got sober at 20 years old and then started drinking at 32 and I NEVER could fully enjoy drinking because in the back of my 12 year 1000's of AA meetings brainwashed mind it always told me I was an an alcoholic. The remedy was to drink more to shut it up. The moral of the story? - If you go to more then 100 AA meetings in a year and stay sober and you are NOT an alcoholic?...you are one now.:2 cents:

I am offered drinks daily and I never get the itch because I wanted to quit and know without a shadow of doubt, I'll never get drunk again. Why? because I don't want too. In all actuality I feel more safe and happy leading a sober life do to the early years of AA brainwashing. In short, it feels normal to me.

AA/NA did nothing for me. I'm not saying it doesn't help because I am sure it has saved thousands of lives, however, if a court says.. "Hey.. you have to go do this for 5 years twice a week".. it just made me more angry... which of course led to continued use. You've got to want it and nobody is going to force sobriety on any addict or alcoholic. :2 cents:

My Advice to you.... Is to start drinking heavily.

I was never an "addict" but I agree with the fact that a person has to WANT to change to actually change. No law will make them change.

You gotta let the monster out to play everyone now in then. You just gotta know when to chain him back up. :2 cents:

:winkwink: Exactly. I watch those "Intervention" shows on cable shaking my head. I realize a big portion of the issues revolve around co-dependency.. but the ending credits usually end up with something like. "Joe returned home with his family after 3 months in a sober living facility." "2 months later Joe relapsed and is now living on the streets. He continues using daily."

nah, not entirely true - my father stopped drinking only after he was diagnosed with cirrhosis. He never wanted to change, he simply had to; prior to that he was starting his day with small vodka at 5am, followed by 3-4 liters of wine throughout the day

Damn, that's crazy. I start my day with a Redbull, and end my day at around 7pm with a few beers or a couple vodka cranberries.

If I begin my day with alcohol, I'll crawl back into bed. My entire day becomes entirely wasted.

Xenigo im curious.. how frequent do you drink a week.. i drink maybe 3 times a week.. and sometimes i feel i shud stop doing it that much... am i an alcoholic for that? serious question

Machete_ 01-10-2011 02:12 AM

YOU'LL BE BACK. DEEP DOWN, YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE.

COME BACK TO WHERE THE BUZZ IS. YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT.

"NON-DRINKER" IS A NEGATIVE IDENTITY. YOU ARE MORE THAN THAT. EVEN THAT IDENTITY PRESUPPOSES THAT YOU STILL DEFINE YOURSELF AS A DRINKER. YOU CAN'T "NON-DRINK" A BEER.

WE ARE WAITING FOR YOU. NINETY PERCENT OF THE TIME, PEOPLE LIKE YOU COME BACK. EVEN IF IT TAKES SEVERAL YEARS. IMAGINE GOING FOR FIVE OR TEN YEARS WITHOUT YOUR COMFORTING OLD FRIENDS, THEN ONE DAY YOU HAVE ONE AND YOU ARE RIGHT BACK HOME AS A DRINKER. THINK OF THOSE WASTED FIVE OR TEN YEARS. DON'T DEPRIVE YOURSELF. COME HOME. YOU KNOW YOU WILL. DON'T LET PEER PRESSURE KEEP YOU AWAY FROM YOUR MOST COMFORTING FRIENDS IN THE WHOLE WORLD. YOU MAY ABANDON THEM FOR A WHILE, BUT THEY ARE LOYAL AND FAITHFUL AND PATIENT. THEY WILL NEVER ABANDON YOU. SO, COME BACK TO WHERE THE FLAVOR IS. RELAX. POUR A GLASS. ENJOY. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO.

SEE YOU SOON!

LOVE,
LIQUOR INDUSTRY

I dont get as wasted as i used to on a staurday any more, usually cause it still affects me on the monday!

96ukssob 01-10-2011 05:21 AM

Just out of curiosity, why did you let your drinking/drugs out of hand? Dont get me wrong, I'm happy that you've been sober for a year now but why weren't you able to control the issue before it got out of control?

Even being a psych major this is something that I was never fully able to grasp. Maybe its just me, but like I said curious to understand...

It's good not to use drugs and alcohol. The sober mind will be able to make a better judgement.

wine is good for your heart if you dont over do it, if you drink to much you will kill your liver. anything you smoke is very bad, i have smoked weed for a long long time, to the point where i was smoking an oz every week for 5 years. nowe my lungs are shot, if i tried to smoke weed now, i can feel my lungs swell up and its hard to breathe. the bible has all the answers you need, once you can control your mind there isnt anything you cant do :2 cents:

It came out quite a while ago that they were giving the soldiers in the first Gulf War experimental drugs to protect them against the possible chemical or biological attacks that were anticipated, and which never came.

Most people blame "gulf war syndrome" on these drugs.

(edit, I assume that is what he is referring to)
