Beer Connoisseurs: Ever try Hoegaarden?

I've not tried Hoegaarden yet. But this is on the agenda for this evening.

What are your thoughts on this? Someone in the last Beer Connoisseurs thread said it was pretty good.

decent beer.

Furious_Male 01-10-2011 09:34 PM

Unfiltered white.. First bottle tastes good to me and then it starts to taste like medicine.

My friends and I have two bottles we keep passing back and forth from party to party. The stuff must be a good 5 years old. No one will drink it.

PR_Dave 01-10-2011 09:36 PM

Solid beer but seems to be the only beer that gives me a headache.

Shoplifter 01-10-2011 09:39 PM

Can't stand wheat beer.

Lint 01-10-2011 09:43 PM

As far as I remember: Notes of citrus, refreshing, good summer beer. Pretty good, but I prefer German wheat beers.

xenigo 01-10-2011 09:47 PM

Perhaps a little citrus, pretty light... tastes and looks lightly filtered. Almost non-filtered. Says "brewed with spices" on the bottle. It does taste like it has a hint of cloves, perhaps...

Overall not a bad beer. Certainly not my favorite, but decent none-the-less.

Sounds like an accurate description! :thumbsup

donkevlar 01-10-2011 11:00 PM

One of my favorites!

NaughtyRob 01-10-2011 11:03 PM

Never tried that. My favorite however is Kronenbourg 1664. Great stuff. Sounds German but its actually French. Not so easy to find.

Hoegaarden during summer is good.. En Kronenbourg is even a better beer imho

MetaMan 01-10-2011 11:41 PM

I like it alot actually. Grows on you. They serve it in GIANT wide pint glasses at the pubs here. Makes you feel manly lol.

Real men drink from liter glasses. :winkwink:

HBKKH 01-10-2011 11:55 PM

beer should never be served with fruit.

Danny B 01-11-2011 12:21 AM

It's an awesome beer, especially ice cold on a sunny terrace.
When I go out I always have 1 or 2 in between the regular beers.
It's a nice flavor changer.

Lester Burnham 01-11-2011 12:23 AM

When I was traveling in London a few years ago I tried it for the first time; I liked it.

Also, it appeared to be the Budweiser equivalent at the London watering holes (served everywhere, beer of choice for folks that want cheap beer).

Ahh, now THAT puts it into perspective. :2 cents:

Corleone 01-11-2011 12:36 AM

very nice beer if out in the sun. ice cold with a slice of lemon and you feel the summer ;)

Axzar 01-11-2011 12:41 AM

Me likey! Ya!

Nathan 01-11-2011 12:52 AM

As many have said, outside, in the summer, slice of lemon. In a GLASS! Do not drink it from a bottle, it will never taste as good. Drink it from a standard hoegarden glass, ie wide and short glass, not a thin and high one. So you get all the flavor when you drink it...

Quoted for truth... damn I miss alcohol :Oh crap

rock-reed 01-11-2011 01:54 AM

I don't like it. Found nothing good about it. And I did not even like the packaging of the beer.

bigmacandcheese 01-11-2011 02:07 AM

don't try it after drinking guiness - it tastes like old english furniture wax if you do

EpicPanda 01-11-2011 02:15 AM

I like it. I prefer Erdinger Weissbräu, but slightly harder to track down.

CaptainHowdy 01-11-2011 05:43 AM

Not that great...

PR_Glen 01-11-2011 07:14 AM

I'm hardly a connoisseur but I like it a lot.. Only 1 or 2 at a time though, not something I would drink all night...

Si 01-11-2011 07:21 AM

I don't like it myself strange flavour sometimes.

I prefer Rickard's white for that kind of beer :thumbsup

I used to think the same, but I tried some Rickard's White served with an orange slice in the glass and I must say it tastes great.

I also like a lime in my Corona. Can't really drink the shit without it.

agree, except my girl turned me on to drinking it with a slice of orange instead of the lemon, and even though I thought it sounded weird, it tasted great!

this is like the french Budweiser
you can find it everywhere, cheap too!

Tom_PM 01-11-2011 10:53 AM

Coriander and orange peel. Maybe a good recipe for a summer beer. Winter is time for stouts and lagers though I think.

bns666 01-11-2011 10:55 AM

it's a great beer, however i am dont drink beer for like 6-7 months

Phoenix 01-11-2011 11:02 AM

its best with a slice of lemon or a slice of orange in it

MaDalton 01-11-2011 11:06 AM

i refer to it as "donkey piss"

it's an insult

DateDoc 01-11-2011 11:17 AM

From BA:

Witbier - A Belgian Style ale that's very pale and cloudy in appearance due to it being unfiltered and the high level of wheat, and sometimes oats, that's used in the mash. Always spiced, generally with coriander, orange peel and other oddball spices or herbs in the back ground. The crispness and slight twang comes from the wheat and the lively level of carbonation. This is one style that many brewers in the US have taken a liking to and have done a very good job of staying to style. Sometimes served with a lemon, but if you truly want to enjoy the untainted subtleties of this style you'll ask for yours without one. Often referred to as "white beers" (witbieren) due to the cloudiness / yeast in suspension.

fatfoo 01-11-2011 12:05 PM

Try it and decide for yourself. Different people have different tolerances for alcohol. This means that throwing up, headaches, loss of memory and loss of speech may start at different times and different doses through the drinking process for different people. Good luck! Every beer has a different flavour that you might like.

I like it ... nice and light and give you a good buzz! drop a lemon in wedge in it

u-Bob 01-11-2011 12:46 PM

Never understood why anyone would want to ruin their beer by putting some fruit in it.

</2 cents>

Xer0 01-11-2011 12:51 PM

If you like blond beer, then you'll like Leffe, Duvel and Erdinger.

You should try Leffe. It's more full bodied and great with meals.
And even better, it's so much less fizzy than most.
