MySpace cuts half of its staff globally
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Struggling entertainment site MySpace said Tuesday that it is cutting nearly half of its staff worldwide, or about 500 people, after an extensive revamp in October overhauled its look and allowed it to be run with fewer people.
Mike Jones, the chief executive of MySpace, said cuts are "tough but necessary" and would put the site on a path to profitability while making it more nimble and entrepreneurial. MySpace declined to say how much the cuts would save. A previous round of cuts in June 2009 eliminated 30 percent of its work force, or about 420 jobs. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/MySpac...45693.html?x=0 |
Struggling entertainment site MySpace is unfortunately surprising everyone with staff cuts. 420 cut in June 2009 and 500 cut now is a lot of people. It sure makes a business more profitable if it is able to run the same way with less employees. Thoughts are thought about machine labour vs. human labour. If you think about the way newspapers describe companies, job cuts are frowned upon. Companies that add more jobs to the economy are praised. It is a sign of struggle if a company is making less profits. However, if the company achieves more profits with less employees than it is a success.

This doesn't really surprise me.

On the brighter side :
Given what myspace actually provided, that was a really nice run they had for a while. Be smart enough to sell your "lucky strike" before reality sets in... ....because it was luck and that won't last. |
Facebook destroyed Myspace. Once everyone discovered facebook it was all over for Myspace.
|
people still use myspace?
|
MySpace is a joke now. I stopped checking mine months ago because it's so laden with viruses and shit. Like, literally every time I tried to browse MySpace (whether it be my messages or a friends page) my anti-virus would block something. Facebook's definitely the way to go now. Less junk.

MySpace is a total joke anyway.
|
myspace is for music promo... many dj's and singers etc use it
|
did the employees really do much? Point of a user generated site is the users make the content... so beyond maintenance and someone to handle ad sales, what more do you really need?

Does Twitter destroy Facebook eventually?
This may be simplistic thinking, but I always thought that if Twitter simply allowed people to put up pages, post pictures, and mirror facebook functionality, they could take FB on. |

too bad to those staff really work hard on myspace :(
|
the site was rough to use then after the updated new version you cant even use it anymore. certainly not on older computers or netbooks. and people stopped going on there. most people dont use it daily anymore. What they should do is workout designing better code so it functions. Of course if you lose 75% of your traffic you dont need as many employees anymore. The best thing is for them to merg with aol.

This will sooner or later also happen to Facebook

In addition to their position eroding over the past few years; |
Die already, MySpace...

Yes. Please die myspace. I always hated going to myspace pages. Stupid auto-playing music and dump backgrounds. It was so bad.
|
i didnt know people used it still, especially in the UK, Do you think facebook will be toopped? i cant imagine how. .
|
First Friendster and now MySpace. They didn't adapt.
|
it seems them turning into an "entertainment" site is killing them, facebook took over and is pushing them out i bet. I stopped using their over cluttered POS site a long time ago i imagine many more did for the same reasons
