Money for Nothing by Dire Straits now banned in Canada, from ONE complaint

The song with the line "The little faggot" is now barred from being played on Canadian airwaves by the Canadian Standards Council, stemming from one complaint that it is "degrading to gays". A new edited version will be allowed.

I just heard the story during the news break on local radio.

Thoughts?

The song is approximately 25 years old.

Censorship rears it's ugly head in Canada, and the air of political correctness that's been growing in N America over the past 20 odd years gets ever stronger. :disgust

Coup 01-13-2011 06:58 AM

This is what happens when people allow themselves to be controlled by illegitimate centralized authority. You'll never be truly free until you break those chains.

Domain Diva 01-13-2011 06:59 AM

The world is going crazy ! (or do I have to say " Mentally Challenged " ) :Oh crap

CaptainHowdy 01-13-2011 07:01 AM

It was a bad song anyways...

Sarah_Jayne 01-13-2011 07:03 AM

The whole point of that line is that it is said by a jerk.

Caligari 01-13-2011 07:03 AM

its more like the air of idiocy because if you listen to the song the perspective is from a couple of bigoted douchebag appliance salesmen saying "that little faggot" bitching about rich rock stars on mtv while selling the very item used to view said channel.

BlackCrayon 01-13-2011 07:10 AM

yet the who get away with 'who the fuck are you'...pretty dumb. i hate censorship.

within 5 years heterosexuality will be outlawed :2 cents:

CDSmith 01-13-2011 07:16 AM

They're saying it was a young guy from St. John's Newfoundland who was the one who lodged the lone complaint. 34 million people in Canada, 24 yr old song, one complaint.

I'm sure the term "stupid newfie" will be banned from being spoken aloud here next.

thickcash_amo 01-13-2011 07:28 AM

seems like they are always trying to make an example, but they really are going way too far

~Ray 01-13-2011 07:29 AM

freedom of expression thwarted

Altwebdesign 01-13-2011 07:32 AM

brilliant song, always play it loud!!

Machete_ 01-13-2011 07:35 AM

fucking fags ruining it for everyone

bronco67 01-13-2011 07:37 AM

Enough with the fucking gays already. I wish they would get over themselves.

Actually, it probably wasn't even a gay person that complained. It could have been some white-bread, middle class liberal kid who jumps at the chance to be outraged by something racist or homophobic at any chance he gets.

magicmike 01-13-2011 07:39 AM

Yeah wtf is that about, they push political correctness way to much in Canada.

kowalsky 01-13-2011 07:41 AM

Songs like that are popular culture property, nobody should have the rights to censor that kind of expressions. If Chavez would do something like that in Venezuela newspapers and crappy jornalists would say things quite different than the one that propably are saying now about this..

suesheboy 01-13-2011 07:42 AM

What stupidity.

Bet that song will get TONS of airplay here.

Dear Canadians...Buy a Sirius radio! :2 cents:

Grapesoda 01-13-2011 07:44 AM

here in the states we are changing the name of the civil war to "the war to free god's chosen superior race from oppression"

seeandsee 01-13-2011 07:44 AM

1 man can do a bl.ock

GatorB 01-13-2011 07:47 AM

Actually back when that song was popular the stations where I lived at the time edited that part out.

DWB 01-13-2011 07:51 AM

Imagine 20 more years. Enjoy whatever freedom you have now, because it's days are numbered.

When they are censoring music and books, history is about to repeat itself.

Good thing most of us don't live in CANADA where this is taking place.

Vjo 01-13-2011 07:55 AM

Sarah_Jayne 01-13-2011 08:00 AM

Love that passive postmodern attitude, "enjoy it while it lasts"...

GTS Mark 01-13-2011 08:16 AM

What a bunch of bullshit...

PR_Glen 01-13-2011 09:06 AM

canada is so pussy whipped when it comes to political correctness it has completely watered down our whole culture, what is left of it.. We are so proud to tell others how accepting we are of other peoples beliefs and ethnicities yet we do nothing at all to preserve our own heritage... its embarrassing...

yo angry jew cat, whats up with the avatar? that's pretty fucked up...

Correct, probably the majority of US radio stations would not play the song, and DS provided an alternate version years ago without the faggot reference. That version (AM release with "I want my" prelude cut to length) is on one of their best of CDs.

In the 70s, Paul Simon's Kodachrome was routinely edited by US radio stations to remove the word "crap" -- "All the crap I learned in high school" -- out of fear of action by the FCC.

At least the Canadian radio stations played the original Dire Straits song and had to be told not to. The US is way too full of self-censorship.

Machete_ 01-13-2011 09:28 AM

how long until they ban men with the first name "Dick"?

u-Bob 01-13-2011 09:30 AM

censorship :(

They did at the company I currently work for. The head of maintenance on the property is named Richard, everyone personally knows him as Dick, but corporate handed the order down that he is to be referred to as Richard during work hours on company property.

I'm not fucking kidding...

michael.kickass 01-13-2011 09:43 AM

That's an example of Canadian evolution going backwards.

GrouchyAdmin 01-13-2011 09:45 AM

That little faggot with the earring and the make-up.

Tom_PM 01-13-2011 09:58 AM

I can remember back when some publisher censored the word "prick" from sleeping beauty. Where she <censored> her finger on a spinning wheel and goes to sleep. That was quite a boner. Oops..

MaDalton 01-13-2011 11:02 AM

looks like the whole north american continent is going back in time ;)

stoner529 01-13-2011 11:02 AM

alias 01-13-2011 12:29 PM

I'm gonna start requesting it daily on my local classic rock station.
