How is it legal in Virginia to be charged "court costs" when you are paying a ticket before court?

ticket is $30 dollars.. no big deal but this $62 dollar "court costs" if you go to court and are found guilt OR if you are prepaying the ticket to avoid court... isn't that the point of paying before court to avoid court costs?

_Richard_ 01-18-2011 11:08 AM

civil infraction or traffic misdemeanor?

candyflip 01-18-2011 11:08 AM

We get that in NY too. Court costs are usually more than the fine with most minor infractions.

comeplay 01-18-2011 11:10 AM

the charge is "fail to obey a hwy sign (no u-turn)" and its 30 dollars.. all traffic court costs are $62 according to their automate phone system..

also criminal cases are $82 court costs...

just "because" ?? seems bogus to me

munki 01-18-2011 11:10 AM

Same way it's legal in CA to tag on court costs, plus private sector "handling fees" to non governmental agencies hired by the court system to process transactions... It's a fucking racket.

Juicy D. Links 01-18-2011 11:14 AM

its there way of assfucking ya .... here in NY they have the "bla bla " fee and so on

baddog 01-18-2011 11:18 AM

Try getting a speeding ticket in CA.

With the surcharges and penalty assessments a $70 ticket becomes a $275 ticket . . . even if you plead guilty and pay without going to court.

$62 is a parking ticket around here.

Don't you watch any CSI shows? There is always semen flying around every crime scene.

It is how we fund the DNA database (I think).

they can do all that for 8 dollars but it takes their $10/hour intern 6.25 hours to mark a ticket guilty and file it as paid?

ottopottomouse 01-18-2011 11:53 AM

They stick a £15($24) Victim Surcharge on top of everything here. Supposedly it goes in a pot to be dished out to victims of violent crime as compensation.

Illegal aliens...you think a US citizen wants to clean cum out of an asshole? But the illegals, they'll do it for pennies on the dollar.

pornguy 01-18-2011 12:25 PM

Just another way to make money.

baddog 01-18-2011 12:41 PM

They do it because $30 is not a deterrent.

TurboAngel 01-18-2011 04:35 PM

They do it because they can IMO I had one in VA a little bit back and it ended up costing me $185. But on the other had you could get a lawyer and go to court but that would cost more.

:(

dyna mo 01-18-2011 04:39 PM

reminds me of the bank charging a convenience fee for making a car payment.

~Ray 01-18-2011 04:43 PM

are you pleading guilty when you pay the ticket? If so, then the court cost are legit and are forgoing the trial. If it were to actually go to court, I am GUESSING that it would then cost MUCH more than $62

Also, if you do not have any recent tickets, go to court and ask for differed judification. It takes 3 minutes tops and you will get it.

6 months without a ticket and it goes away... BUT, if you get another ticket within 6 months, you get nailed for both.

newB 01-18-2011 04:43 PM

They fully expect you to show up, talk to the DA and get it dismissed, just so long as you pay the court cost. It was never about the $30 ticket.

And they say quota's don't exist. Right.

Barry-xlovecam 01-18-2011 04:47 PM

I guess property tax is not enough to pay for the courts. Fees are a popular way to raise money and don't require approval at the polls ...

"taxation without voter approval."

Least it's itemised. Around here (Victoria, Australia) if you're only 4km/hr (2.5m/hr) over the limit you get fined around $USD150. No breakdown of what it's for, or where it goes. :)

Quotas these days are disguised as "performance reviews".

The worst tend to be local police, but then most here likely already knew that ...

Situation got so bad in Pennsylvania decades ago with local "speed traps", that when portable radar units became widely available, Pennsylvania forbid most (there are now some exceptions due to recent changes in law) use of radar except by PA state police. Hence, most local police in PA are relegated to using timing methods only with a +10 MPH "cushion".
