Former Millburn resident Anne Hathaway has snagged the role of Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) in Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated "The Dark Knight Rises."

Selina Kyle/Catwoman is a whip-carrying burglar with a taste for high-stake thefts and is a sometimes-adversary of the Caped Crusader, often engaging in a love-hate relationship with him. In modern comic incarnations, Catwoman has been more of an antihero rather than a full-fledged supervillain.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story," said director Christopher Nolan in a press release, posted at Deadline Hollywood.

In the sixties, actresses Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, and Eartha Kitt portrayed the feline role in the camp TV show "Batman." In 1992, Michelle Pfeiffer was cast for the film "Batman Returns" and in 2004 Halle Berry starred in a dreadful stand-alone Catwoman film.


DC COMICSIt was rumored that Keira Knightley, Rachel Weisz, Blake Lively and Natalie Portman were also vying for the coveted role.

In addition, Tom Hardy (who starred in Nolan's "Inception") will star as the villain Bane, a luchador-like baddie best known for breaking Batman's back in the "Knightfall" story arc.

Christian Bale will be reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

i'm not too familiar with her acting, but she looks the part at least... Portman is one of my favourites but I have a hard time believing she could pull off a role like that. Has she ever played anyone evil?

I think Anne Hathaway is gorgeous, but I can't really see her in the part.

She was pretty awful as the White Queen in Alice and Wonderland. I guess it's a hell of an opportunity to go against type and be a break out performance. Hope it doesn't suck, I've really liked the Nolan batman movies, but it's not impossible to make a bad call / turn out a bad performance in one (Katie Holmes).

I'd like to see some NEW Batman villains on the big screen. Catwoman & Bane have already been done (butchered by Joel Schumacher) and IMO are fairly weak character villains. At least it's not the Penguin or Mr Freeze. But with Nolan making some bad ass movies and Tom Hardy as Bane I'll put that aside and see it for sure. Would rather see a JLA movie built around Batman. Though an ensemble cast would probably turn that into a steaming pile of shit.

Most the lead women in Nolan's films aren't sexed up but it works anyways. Both Rachels were very plain jane. So maybe he's rolling out a different take on Catwoman. With his track record he'll either be jumping the shark or pulling out something amazing.

I think Hathaway's got Selena Kyle in the bag, but I have doubts she can turn out Catwoman. Anne Hathaway is gorgeous, but as Eartha Kitt showed so well (IMO) you don't have to be a traditional beauty to own the role, you just have to bring that dangerous, dominant, sultry sexuality.

It's a part and a situation similar to that in "Black Swan". Hathaway can pull off the white swan w/o issue, she's perfect for the role, but can she play the sinister sexual black half? I guess we'll see in a year.

Interesting they scrapped the riddler, and after they put out teaser art too.

Anny Hathaway is one Hollywood gal that I wouldn't mind having a kid with - Stable, level-headed, beautiful, stays out of the tabloids...
