They started out really good, but their search results got spammed into irrelevance
right at the time that google emerged.

I'm a little shocked they are still around. I haven't used them in years, but when I first got started I used to hammer them with sites I had built and would get all kinds of great traffic from them.

There are still couple of good search engines left:
Hotbot.com
Excite.com

I used to have the #1 result in AltaVista for the term "Radio Controlled Airplanes" :)

For about 48 hours back in 2000 I had the #1 spot for "teen porn" that was a fun 48 hours. I lost it after 2 days and was never able to repeat it.

I use it as it shortcut to bablefish. I guess I'll have to google it... :(

What kind of traffic did that result in? And what kind of sales? That was back before the time I even knew what 'monetization' or 'traffic' meant...

I made a ton of money off Alta vista 99ish

They where my favorite for a long time. But once Google came out they where quickly obsolete.

To be honest is not all that, there can be a much better searching system, someone just needs a couple million to make it happen.

I used to use Altavista and Infoseek all the time before Google. They were great when they first started but they got ripped to shreds by spamdexers. The quality of their search results just got worse and worse.

Don't forget Google was just as spammable when it first came out if not more so, its a pity the money from converting searchers into porn members went out the door. Google right now is the easiest its been to rank in years, but I find adult terms aren't worth the effort anymore, way easier gold elsewhere.

The traffic was decent if I remember correctly, but the sales were really nice. I was using a recurring sponsor for that site so I don't know exactly how much I made off it but my ratio was around 1:60 so it worked out pretty nicely

So are we talking in excess of $3000 per day or what?

It was probably about that total for both days. May have been a little more once all the rebills ran their course.

I still get altavista traffic! Damn :-(
