I have never seen a horror movie - recommend one right now!

I still cannot understand people's fascination with horror movies, but I promised myself to pick one and watch it from beginning to end no matter what.

Nothing sci-fi
Nothing "find teenagers, kill teenagers" boring kind of crap
Nothing pre-2000

Thank you

Saw and The Ring for sure. Whoever made that centipede movie needs to be taken out and shot on general principle. Like a train wreck, I couldn't make myself look away and I can never ever get that 90 minutes of my life back.

WebairGerard 01-24-2011 11:31 AM

an older one I liked: Serpent and the Rainbow

I don't know if it's horror but Pan's Labyrinth is one of the most beautiful and disturbing Spanish films I've seen.

If the dude won't watch an IMDB 5 though, I don't think that horror is ever going to be his genre. One of the things I enjoy most about horror movies is how shitty they are, they make me feel like I could make money as a film maker even though I know pretty close to nothing about it.

candyflip 01-24-2011 12:21 PM

Drag Me To Hell was a lot of fun.

yep i would put Pans Labyrinth in horror-fantasy, and its fucking great.

but if you look at REC its got a 7.7 on imdb and REC 2 a 6.7 so they are well rated with a TON of reviews.

also i just saw a film last night called Surveillance which while not "horror" genre, its pretty disturbing. directed by Jennifer Lynch (David Lynch's daughter) you can see she has a touch of the old man's insanity;)
It's violent and creepy with occasional comedic overtones.
Amazing though, i don't know if IMDB's stats are right because it claims 3.5 million dollar budget for the film and it shows a gross of 25k:Oh crap
this film should be getting far more exposure.

PR_Glen 01-24-2011 12:55 PM

The same producer, Guillermo del Toro, has another great flick out called The Orphanage. I thought it was excellent with a pleasant but disturbing ending as well.

If you liked Pan's Labyrinth you'd like this one too. Check it out!

Human Centipede was absolutely horrible. Stupid, in fact.

2MuchMark 01-24-2011 01:39 PM

What kind of horror movie do you think you would like? There are different kinds... and you may not want to discount all movies made prior to 2000 as there are some really good ones.

The best horror movies are the ones who have really good characters, are "fun" to watch, and which are made with lots of thought.

One of my favorite movies of all time is Poltergeist (1, not 2 or 3). It's a great story, good effects, and a flat-out freak-out good time. It was made in the 80's though so it may not have the same kick today as it did.

A really good modern horror movie is NIGHT OF A THOUSAND CORPSES. There is no more of a FUN horror movie than this one. Crazy characters, good acting, and a really really excellent style. There is lots of horrrow without too much gore. It's just as much of a mind-fuck as it is a slasher movie, and all of the filmmakers involved clearly had a good time making it.

Have a fun and welcome to the world of Horror!

weecey 01-24-2011 01:42 PM

paranormal activity, scariest film i've seen in a while....

bronco67 01-24-2011 01:46 PM

The Descent

SykkBoy 01-24-2011 01:51 PM

+1 for Martyrs and the Descent

so many subgenres in horror though...

my favorites are slasher movies, old school zombie flicks (no running zombies) and slow burn psychological horror movies like Session 9

I also love cheesy over the top campy gory flicks, but they aren't to everyone's liking...bad acting, bad special effects and bad dialog along with a lot of tongue in cheek fun...

Fetish Gimp 01-24-2011 01:59 PM

Campy horror? Slither.

adamz 01-24-2011 02:10 PM

Antonio start with the classics my friend, half of the shit people recommended here is horror done my CG.... which isn't horror.

Here are four that will fuck with your mind and soul:

StariaDaniel 01-24-2011 02:11 PM

Lot of good one's already mentioned :thumbsup

The Ring
Paranormal Activity (Low budget, but VERY worth watching)
Martyrs (French movie)
Frontier(s) (French movie, fucking sick, very violent)
REC (Spanish movie)
Saw 1 (the other one's are more or less the same plot, lot of people dying in very creative ways :winkwink:)

But you also should watch some classics, even if they're not as good as today's movies (special effects, etc.) like the Evil Dead series :thumbsup

fuzebox 01-24-2011 02:15 PM

Pre 2000 is where it's at... I'm a big fan of biblical horror, so The Exorcist is up there among my favorites.

If you only see one horror movie though, I concur that it should be The Ring.

Rob Zombie's Halloween should get an honorable mention (not the sequel though).

svzcom 01-24-2011 02:22 PM

Dead silence

Tam 01-24-2011 02:28 PM

My favorite mindfuck movies are all by Stephen King. and I seen an interview with him once where he said Clive Barker scared the shit out of him. so I'd go with either of these guys' movies. lol

I used to watch all horror movies, but I stopped after Cat's Eye by Stephen King. I was by myself one night and a cat I had outside had had kittens, and when it was over, I got up to go to the back of the house and all I could see outside my door was a bunch of glowing eyes and all of them were meowing REALLY loud..... scared the living hell out of me. lol
