Would You Replace A Laptop With An iPad ??

Our laptop in here is past it's best now, and we have the desktop comp upstairs which i use for work, so were considering replacing the laptop and maybe just getting an iPad instead.

Bad move? If so, why ??

Remember the laptop isn't really for work, it's mostly my girlfriend who uses it just to mess about...

:upsidedow

AzteK 01-27-2011 02:07 PM

so the laptop is for her and not work? ipad seems like a good idea. apple is for girls anyways (and sissy's)...glad I could help...

Caligari 01-27-2011 02:07 PM

i would definitely NOT consider getting an ipad, get another laptop because you never know when you might just need to do some serious stuff on it. great for back up.

prices are good now for laptops so i would go that route.

Yeah that's what i was thinking. I do get use out of it, so it is handy to have.

With the other comp though it made me think if we should get the iPad just for a change, since i probably wouldn't ever buy one otherwise as i don't feel i really "need" one...

bns666 01-27-2011 02:11 PM

you could do serious work on laptop in the case of emergency or when traveling, on ipad i doubt...

Mostly yes. Though we do both use it obviously...

Red Ezra 01-27-2011 02:14 PM

Stick with laptop for work

grumpy 01-27-2011 02:16 PM

no no and no

INever 01-27-2011 02:17 PM

No. Why lose functionality? I think this whole IPAD, Iphone thing is a regression but that's where the market is. But I like having full featured products.

DiF0r 01-27-2011 02:20 PM

laptop for sure, or both :D

Chosen 01-27-2011 02:21 PM

No. Never.

TopbucksMatt 01-27-2011 02:27 PM

Yeap get the ipad, she'll dig it but most definitely wait for the 'iPad2' or whatever it is going to be named to come out in April. However, if she's going to be writing a novel, screenplay or manifesto go with the laptop.

Mickey_ 01-27-2011 02:27 PM

What is your budget and can you define 'mess about'? How much typing is involved?

CYF 01-27-2011 02:33 PM

no, never.

Probably around £500.

And her messing about consists of Shopping online, Facebook, and not much else... :1orglaugh

:Oh crap

iPad will be perfect and if it's not just spend a couple of hundred £ on a laptop later?

scuba steve 01-27-2011 02:49 PM

ipad isn't a replacement for the laptop, just a compliment. great to have when surfing quick or browsing, keep entertained. for real stuff gotta go to the laptop. lots of typing on an ipad is impossible

Never! The laptop design cannot get better unless there is a hands free way to use it like Minority Report. I don't even have desktops, just a bunch of laptops.

If you can go higher (~900 GBP) get her a macbook air. superb laptop, small, light, fast and most importantly no constraints (flash support, full sized keyboard).
If you can't go higher and she doesn't mind lack of flash and slower typing, go with the iPad. Like others have said, it is not a substitute for a laptop, it's a nice complimentary device/gadget for leisure on- and offline activities (reading books/rss feeds/surfing websites, shopping, games, light emailing)

Having an iPad, if you aren't using it for anything too intensive, it will be perfect for what you are needing.

I can do my work at home on my iPad, granted I'm not FTP'ing or anything, simple admins & stats, etc.

I love being in bed being able to just set it up and watch TV. I've fallen asleep with it in my hands quite a bit too. :)

pristine 01-27-2011 03:42 PM

New laptop.

PastorSinAlot 01-27-2011 03:46 PM

laptop dude, get one with an 11-13" screen, it's light and runs cool. I got a dell like that, it's very mobile.

CamChameleon 01-27-2011 03:58 PM

If it really is just for surfing then the ipad would do the task as it works for me but would look at other tablets first to see what they can offer (android, Samsung Galaxy etc). Or you could look at netbooks as a middle ground :thumbsup

The Galaxy tab is a very good alternative, tested it for a while, supports flash, many alternative typing methods, etc.
Definitely a 'lot more open' and able than the iPad, I still prefer the iPad due to the UI/user experience, however.

PiffStenis 01-27-2011 04:02 PM

Whatever's cheapest

beks001 01-27-2011 04:10 PM

When I get both and test them out I'll let you know. I would love to have the ipad for net surfing and reading....laptop for minimal work etc.

myneid 01-27-2011 04:31 PM

most definately YES!
not just to contradict everybody here.

i have the keyboard/case zaggmate from zagg.com for my ipad.

i do have a laptop but i use it more as a desktop. if i do need to be on it from my ipad, i use logmein to get into it and it works like a charm.

i often use my ipad for working, and i do not travel with my laptop anymore as the ipad is more convenient.

the ipad can change your life and the way you think about computing

SZNY 01-27-2011 05:39 PM

Consider the Galaxy Tab. Having it for 1 month and I can do everything with it. Ipad is also nice but for me personal too big and missing Flash/AIR on the device. Soon Android 3.0 will be soon available which is especially made for Pad devices.

Ross 01-27-2011 06:12 PM

Knowing Laura and YOU, defo go for the iPad. You hardly work on your laptop anyway, its always your PC. iPad is good for taking on holiday as well to check up on shit like mail and stats etc, not like you do much shit on vacation anyway other than get drunk!

Wait till April, till the new iPad comes out tho.

blonda80 01-28-2011 01:39 AM

no way .

SBJ 01-28-2011 01:48 AM

I love my ipad for light surfing and checking stats while i watch TV or in bed to check things one last time before I sleep or checking things to see if I can snooze more or need to get on my Laptops to work.

For what you need it for your wife she will love the ipad way more than any laptop.

CamsMaster 01-29-2011 07:33 AM

I would rather replace it with a minilaptop

djroof 01-29-2011 07:38 AM

of course not ;)

Barefootsies 01-29-2011 07:39 AM

If you want the option of a "back up" to do any work on. Laptop.

If you do not need that option, and just want to have the iPad for traveling, checking email and browsing GFY. Then it's a good option to go that route. I prefer iPod/iPad for traveling versus laptop. Easier for the plane, lugging around, etc..

:2 cents:

I have, Imac, mac mini and Macbook pro. Wife uses the Imac, she is on it all day tons of emails typing etc. I use the laptop as a desktop... bigger monitor wireless keyboard, but it almost never leaves my desk.

The mini... it lives it's life as the heart of my media center.

But to walk out right now and buy another system, I would get the ipad (2) I might pick up an ipad 1 for my kids to mess around with once 2 comes out, just because they will become dirt cheap and my 4 year old already loves her ipod touch...

purecharlie 01-29-2011 07:53 AM

Just work out how much typing she will need to do on this machine and you then have your answer - if it's "very little" then you can go with the iPad, if it's any answer other than "very little" go with the laptop :thumbsup

cooldude7 01-29-2011 07:56 AM

no way.......
