Whoa! Egypt, Syria Stun World by Unplugging from the Web...
YNOT ? The internet went dark in Egypt at about 30 minutes after midnight Friday as the government attempted to quell violent protests demanding the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak.
According to early reports from Al Arabiya, Syria quickly followed suit, completing a partial shutdown government officials engineered Wednesday after a coup allegedly backed by Al-Jazeera overthrew Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali. Some Middle Eastern media reported Ben Ali?s ouster resulted from his close ties to the West, but government-controlled Syrian media on Friday laid the blame on unrest over prices, unemployment and state repression. I sort of agree with the whole internet thing. Probably shutting it down makes the people actually go out and do more. When you are on the the internet, you get the false impression people are actually caring about what you do. Clicking "like" on a Facebook page doesn't equal a revolution.
Look at the world we live in now, because of the internet the "truth" is masked by all the constant noise and people who want to hide the truth can spin stories as fast as they come out. Look at Wikileaks, all it did was make Julian Assange famous, it had no effect on anything else. A week passed and everyone just moved on. If those documents were published in a newspaper 30 years ago, it would have had a profound effect. It's tough for internet fanboys to understand, but the net effect of the internet on society is probably negative at this point. |

Is Israel in panic mode yet?
The Egyptian government is about to fall, probably to be replaced by the Muslim Brotherhood, the parent organization of Hamas. Hezbollah, close to Iran enjoys massive support in Lebanon, even from Christians. Syria is still unfriendly to them. Jordan is on decent terms with Israel but it's filled with mostly Palestinians. The US is becoming Jew wise and any support for an Israeli attack on Iran will be political death. |
