Google claims BING is COPYING search results

Google claims that Bing is copying search results. Supposedly, Bing doesn't deny the charge. See below.

Google has run a sting operation that it says proves Bing has been watching what people search for on Google, the sites they select from Google?s results, then uses that information to improve Bing?s own search listings. Bing doesn?t deny this.

As a result of the apparent monitoring, Bing?s relevancy is potentially improving (or getting worse) on the back of Google?s own work. Google likens it to the digital equivalent of Bing leaning over during an exam and copying off of Google?s test.

?I?ve spent my career in pursuit of a good search engine,? says Amit Singhal, a Google Fellow who oversees the search engine?s ranking algorithm. ?I?ve got no problem with a competitor developing an innovative algorithm. But copying is not innovation, in my book.?

Bing doesn?t deny Google?s claim.

Sweet justice. I always appreciate the irony.

Microsoft is no stranger to charges of copying :) DOS looked like another company's product. Same with Windows. LOL

SmokeyTheBear 02-01-2011 01:59 PM

bing is a search engine , they search google.. google is a search engine , they search my search engines too.

brassmonkey 02-01-2011 02:09 PM

searchers being searched

I was beginning to think this was happening a while ago...

And I was beginning to think that sometimes Google retaliates by moving some people down when they are #1 in MSN...

When ever I have a #1 in Google, if it's picked up as #1 in MSN it drops immediately to #5 in Google...

fatfoo 02-01-2011 02:10 PM

Google is sure the world's #1 search engine because it has the best ranking algorithms. I don't think Google is #1 for any other reasons. The visual design of Google is quite simple.

Noticed a few similar things.

MAAAAAAAAAAN I thought I was tripping. I've noticed the same results with yahoo. When I go up in yahoo the same listing, for the same term goes down a couple of notches in google and there had been no change to the site as far an on page optimization is considered.

what do you expect? microsteal is run by lawyers, all lawyers know how to steal..its in their code

AzteK 02-01-2011 02:42 PM

If you actually read the article bing toolbar sends info back and the engineers has the toolbar installed during the 'sting' so the search they did, the url they clicked was reported back to bing and they updated their search results. It's skewed.

Phonebooks do this all the time. Indeed, one lawsuit by a phonebook changed US copyright law for good. See http://www.law.cornell.edu/copyright...499_US_340.htm

So Google gonna sue Microsoft now?

marketsmart 02-01-2011 04:12 PM

.

question is if bing is mirroring google searches if you get deindexed by google does your bing serps suffer as well?

mynameisjim 02-01-2011 04:25 PM

Google stole the idea for PPC from Yahoo, Apple stole the idea for a mouse and window based GUI from Xerox. Everybody steals everything.

But it is funny that when you search for any type of media, Google serves up 20 pages of illegal torrent download pages and now they are upset they are the ones getting ripped off.

looky_lou 02-01-2011 04:49 PM

I hope Bing doesn't use Google's results. I really like getting relevant results on Bing without the first two pages of tubes, torrents, and file sharing results.

Adam_M 02-01-2011 05:10 PM

My listing in bing are much the same as yahoo but not at all the same as google

SomeCreep 02-01-2011 05:18 PM

Bing.com, lol, what a joke. Microsoft is so desperately scared of being left behind and it shows.

letitbe 02-01-2011 05:22 PM

Google No Different

Google is no different than Microsoft. They spider every website including other search engines. Afterward they throw that info into their algorithm.

Jay-Z 02-01-2011 05:22 PM

I'm loving my new bing traffic :)

seeric 02-01-2011 05:23 PM

google has some real nerve to care -- i mean, their whole business model is based of 'exploiting' in a sense the work of others

look at google news -- kills a TON of direct visitation to the news sites that actually write the stories, look at google images -- just grab what you were looking for and ignore the site it came from, google still get its advertising revenue though

Lester Burnham 02-02-2011 01:02 AM

If you can't beat them, copy them.

And lets not even start about google images.

FUCK GOOGLE ... I get very few porn hits from google ... do get a fair share of mainstream hits from them ... I do very well in porn with all the other engines ... Google doesn't like my SEO, even on single pages with 100 words ... so, FUCK GOOGLE.
